wow, had no idea this was coming down today.

6-3 vote.

"Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist and Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas dissented.

"The court has largely signed on to the so-called homosexual agenda," Scalia wrote for the three. He took the unusual step of reading his dissent from the bench."

H (Heruy), Thursday, 26 June 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Clarence Thomas dissented?
Against legalizing kinky sex?
Did he understand the question?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 26 June 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

HAHAHAHAHA!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 26 June 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

The court has largely signed on to the so-called homosexual agenda

And the world's better for it! The three of them really should be caught in a love pit together one day.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 June 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

The court has largely signed on to the so-called homosexual agenda
we know that under their robes, those guys are all wearing short-shorts.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 26 June 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

haha i love how scalia calls it the "so-called" homosexual agenda — what's that, the get-out clause?

or does he mean he prefers more "robust" words than homosexual?

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 26 June 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

"The court has taken sides in the culture war," Scalia said, adding that he has "nothing against homosexuals."

H (Heruy), Thursday, 26 June 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Nothing they would want against them, anyway.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 June 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Tonite, all of Texas does it in the butt.

jm (jtm), Thursday, 26 June 2003 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

welcome to the 20th century, texas.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 26 June 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

the astroglide's gonna be flying off the shelves in dallas tonight!

good to see texas just about catching up with civilization.

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Thursday, 26 June 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

ROAD TRIP!

Layna Andersen (Layna Andersen), Thursday, 26 June 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

so which one of you texans wants to be the first to come out and tell us you broke this law in the old days?

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 26 June 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

did the sodomy law apply to boy-girl anal as well?

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Thursday, 26 June 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

"The court has taken sides in the culture war," Scalia said, adding that he has "nothing against homosexuals."

What a disingenuous crock of shit. If you're going to say that there IS such a thing as a "homosexual agenda," or that overturning sodomy laws is necessarily part of "the culture wars," then you ARE a willing participant of the culture wars -- you've taken a side. These terms is so damned loaded you can't use it the way he does maintain some objective stance towards it.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 26 June 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

The legal definition of sodomy includes oral sex. I think it includes ANYTHING other than tab A into slot B.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 26 June 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Rather: "...you can't use it the way he does AND maintain some objective stance towards it."

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 26 June 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, Bob, your girlfriend can legally fuck you in the ass now.

rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 26 June 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not sure, but I think this law still stands in Virginia, where I live. We've also got the second-highest capital punishment stats in the country (far behind Texas). Yay for VA!

NA. (Nick A.), Thursday, 26 June 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

in Texas - sodomy man/woman, man/animal (and maybe vice versa) was legal
only man on man hot luv action was illegal

H (Heruy), Thursday, 26 June 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry i have no girlfriend, but im open to suggestion on the whole girl boy anal reversal issue.

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Thursday, 26 June 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Clarence Thomas was also the lone dissenter when the Supreme Court overturned a case in which the prosecutors deliberately kept black people out of the jury because they believed black jurors sympathize with criminals.

I hate Clarence Thomas with an abiding passion.

jewelly (jewelly), Thursday, 26 June 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

There was actually an interesting commentary In the National Post last week (relating to Canada's same-sex marriage stance) on the mainstreaming of gay culture and what will this mean for the sexy subversiveness of it all.
I mean, better to be not in jail than criminally hip, but still, gay people should be prepared for the fact they are on their way to becoming as bland as the rest of us.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 26 June 2003 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

cf Will & Grace

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 26 June 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

All state sodomy laws are struck down by this ruling. Give Clarke a call, Nick!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 26 June 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Really, though, I think we should all refrain from forming opinions about this until we hear what the Dixie Chicks have to say.

Was Joe Millionaire grafted from a Hasselhoff pubic hair the Fox Network found while sitting in KITT at a Hoboken auto show?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 26 June 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Yancey, there's room in my bed for three...

NA. (Nick A.), Thursday, 26 June 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I find that top picture of David Hasselhoff strangely attractive. Actually, the other two aren't bad either.

Oh no, what have I become?

Anyone got any George Clooney pics?

toraneko (toraneko), Thursday, 26 June 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry for the thread hijacking.

Um, OT, in Tasmania male-gay sex was illegal but female wasn't coz no-one would explain to Queen Victoria how two women could have sex so she refused to sign a law against it. Or so the story goes. Fellatio was against the law too but that's was all overturned a couple of years ago. For those who are interested in reading more

toraneko (toraneko), Thursday, 26 June 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm currently trying to find this old thing I gave to my mom, well I'm trying to have her find it at least, and scan it in...when I worked at a paper, we got this press kit for the Peacemaker, and in it was a postcard with George Clooney emblazoned with the logo WHO WILL PROECT US?? and to this day it's still like my favorite thing ever and sometimes I call her and just say, but who will protect us?

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 26 June 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

was it struck down on equal protection grounds or due process grounds? cuz if it was on equal protection grounds then sodomy is still illegal in some states.

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 26 June 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

ok it appears it was on due process grounds, ho bisogna di sesso anale

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 26 June 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

morally the ruling was right, but constitutionally i have to say scalia's argument is sound.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 26 June 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

heh - that's scalia!

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 26 June 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Thomas said that he didn't think the law was unconstitutional but if he was a Texas state legislator he'd vote to repeal it.

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 26 June 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

While no butts were involved in this one, at least it only took the Texas jury 1 hour.

best thread hijacking ever, I'd say.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Thursday, 26 June 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

6-3, baby! Justice John Paul Stevens, who was a Ford appointee (you see, Ford did have some intelligence in him), "agreed fully with the ruling"!

Let me tell you, not everyone in TX was for this law. This law was passed a long, long time ago, and it's really only been the rednecks of the state that have fought to keep this law on the books. I am overjoyed to see this law struck down and look forward to seeing more of this so-called "pushing of the homosexual 'agenda'". (Hm, I didn't know homosexuals had one aside from trying to gain first-class citizenship throughout the U.S.)

Next up -- legalization of marriage! I hope hope hope that sometime soon this can come into fruition here in the U.S.

(Yes, this is *me* posting. Heh.)

Innocent Dreamer (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 26 June 2003 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

"Find her guilty of what she's really guilty of - failure to stop and render aid," defence attorney Jeff Kearney said.

You can hope, but I can't really see the greybeards allowing for rice-tossing over the newly-hitched wife-and-wife.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 26 June 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm just gonna come out and say that this has been a banner week for the Court, also will somebody accidentally hit Scalia in the teeth with a bus already

Everyone loves lesbians. Including God, as evidenced by STD rates.

The oldtimers have a problem with husband-and-husband.

Aw. How about bird seed?

Really, though, I think I'll continue to hold out hope of seeing the legalization of same-gender marriages come into being. *crosses fingers* (This is the dreamer part of me coming out.)

Innocent Dreamer (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 26 June 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

All state sodomy laws are struck down by this ruling. Give Clarke a call, Nick!

Actually, only the Texas law was overturned, but the fact the Supremes did overturn it does help those who are trying to eliminate other states' antisodomy laws.

As I recall, the Virginia law applied to opposite-sex as well as same-sex couples. But I went to college in Virginia, and like most of my classmates I willfully violated that law.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 27 June 2003 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Honestly, I didn't know such laws still existed in the US. Shcocking!

I haven't got a single patriotic bone in me, but sometimes I feel happy I happen live in a somewhat tolerant country. A year ago, the Finnish parliament finally passed the law that approved homosexual marriages. The next big debate is whether gay couples should be able to adopt children. I guess it'll happen eventually.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 27 June 2003 09:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Dee...
Do you think that a republican government will ever give the nod to homosexual marriage (I cant puctuate right now because Im using a French keyboard...sorry) Wouldnt it be better to vote for a party that might actually promote this kind of equality as opposed to crossing your fingers (question mark here)--and I dont necessarily mean voting democrat either...then again, I aint American so maybe I just dont get it.
Just a question...
