Dweezil Zappa & John Tesh (on keytar) covering Black Sabbath's "The Wizard"

So about 8 years ago I was returning home from a night of music with my friend and we were both in a very inebriated state and we turned on the TV and on the Conan O'Brien show was Dweezil Zappa and his younger brother and John Tesh covering Black Sabbath's "The Wizard". We watched along with mouths agape and when finished we turned towards with equally disbelieving looks. we did not say a word or move for at least 10 minutes afterward.

here is the photographic evidence, i'm sure an mpeg exists somewhere on the web.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 26 June 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

should i have posted this on ILM instead?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 26 June 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I just lost my mind completely.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 26 June 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

that is a thing of glory, john is rockin' out

H (Heruy), Thursday, 26 June 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I am now cleansed.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 June 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh. THIS thread. Wow.

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 26 June 2003 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw this too! Classicness.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 26 June 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

PEOPLE DO YOU NOT SEE THAT THIS IS THE GREATEST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED IN THE HISTORY OF MANKIND??? THE REACTION IS SO SUBDUED, I CAN ONLY ASSUME YOU ARE ALL OF THE NON-SEEING VARIETY!

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 26 June 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, the site doesn't let me see it anymore -- too many of you people gobbled the fun up too fast.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 26 June 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Good thing I saved this then!!

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 26 June 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm pretty sure the whole of popular culture and consumer technologies, including but not limited to the invention of music, the prescription to "make a joyful noise unto the Lord," and the development of recording and broadcast media, served no purpose greater than the prerequisite of this event.

Better, Ally?

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 26 June 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, you have gladdened me, Tep, and for that you get kisses.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 26 June 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

ROCK! (xpost)

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 26 June 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Great. As I recall, it was a pretty good performance too. Tesh was getting some awesome, distorted sounds out of his vintage 80s synth-tar.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 26 June 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

That's because The Tesh is the greatest man who ever lived.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 26 June 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I want a key-tar so bad.

NA. (Nick A.), Thursday, 26 June 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I have this mp3 queued for download as I type this.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 26 June 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

DAN I SWEAR TO GOD IF YOU DON'T MAKE THAT AVAILABLE TO ME IN SOME FASHION BY THE END OF TONIGHT, I'M COMING AFTER YOU.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 26 June 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan, give it to just me and then we can watch Ally have a fit. It'll be so fun!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 June 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Heavens! I kill you now ;)

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 26 June 2003 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally is a god amoung ILXORS for saving that pic.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 26 June 2003 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I'M LISTENING TO IT RIGHT NOW! I AM I AM I AM.

OH MY GOD I AM IN HEAVEN.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 26 June 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

It's even better to listen to it while looking at that picture.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 26 June 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Stop rubbing it in my face, Dan! Weren't you the person I sent the Pesci song thing to? It's only fair I get the Tesh in return.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 26 June 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

H (Heruy), Thursday, 26 June 2003 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 26 June 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I just listened to my Tesh-a-gram for reassurance and spiritual guidance. But soon my voicemail system will erase it! I have to figure out a way to get it on my computer...

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 26 June 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Right, every single one of my crush CDs is gonna have this song on it. Oh my god.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 26 June 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I am completely stunned. Someone email me the mp3 or I'm taking down the whole Internet.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 26 June 2003 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

who is the creepy woman(?) looking on from the booth?!?!?!

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 26 June 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

That's an SH-101 if I'm not mistaken, I had no idea Mr. Tesh had so much acid techno cred

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 26 June 2003 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Let me know when someone has a copy of the mp3 that they can send to me...

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 26 June 2003 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 June 2003 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I want a copy of the MP3, too. (Email me first before you send it--Juno has a two megabyte inbox limit, but I can give you an alternative address.)

Christine 'Green Leafy Dragon' Indigo (cindigo), Thursday, 26 June 2003 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno, maybe it would be better if they were doing "We Are The World".

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 26 June 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

How would that be better?

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 27 June 2003 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

somebody bring a CDR to the FAP in NYC

Millar (Millar), Friday, 27 June 2003 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

You townies are fucking demanding.

(Millar I'll make you a mix cd)

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 27 June 2003 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you guys get the version with the intro where they're talking to Conan? I say it's staged! Awesome, thanks for letting us know it exists!

Scaredy cat (Natola), Friday, 27 June 2003 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

No, you know what, it would be better if it were that "Chim-Chim-eree" song from Mary Poppins.

Chris P (Chris P), Friday, 27 June 2003 02:17 (twenty-two years ago)

No--the one where they totally raid the rich dude's house and they're like, "It's the master step in time!" That'd be great.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 27 June 2003 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, actually if John Tesh were saying something like "Hi, this is John Tesh. A good friend wanted me to let you know that I love to laugh -- long and loud and clear. You know a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down -- in the most delightful way." That would be hott.

Chris P (Chris P), Friday, 27 June 2003 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

John Tesh is totally fucking huge, btw, what is that about? He's like Patrick Ewing sized or something.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 27 June 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

and he's your friend!

joan vich (joan vich), Friday, 27 June 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

So who was being exploited for mere comedic value here? cuz, like, the Zappas ain't exactly the pillar of respectapooity, y'know?
I mean, Tesh is an instant chuckle, cuz he's like Frankenstein's Monster with a new age can-do attitude, but the Zappas, they're like, token C or even D-list Celebrities. Beneath Arsenio Hall even.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

!

The Zappa's bursts of childlike enthusiasm upon seeing John Tesh walk out was a little disturbing -- they ran to him like he was the new age Santa.

The real hero is that woman who sat in the booth and managed to keep a straight face throughout the entire thing.
