Denim ballerina skirts, popular in the late Eighties. I loved them, they looked good on me, and I miss wearing them.

Christine 'Green Leafy Dragon' Indigo (cindigo), Thursday, 26 June 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I slightly resent never getting the opportunity to wear a mini-crini back in the 80s.

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 26 June 2003 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Loincloths. But not on everybody. And certainly not on me.

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 26 June 2003 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

ankle length coats

also, whenever chubby-girls-in-midriff-tops goes out of fashion, i'll miss that too

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 26 June 2003 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

ripped sweatshirts, garter belts and fishnets

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 26 June 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

The shot-bead necklaces that everyone I knew bought after seeing Bush on MTV. Those make me nostalgic.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 26 June 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

In these days of faux irony/nostalgia, I'm not sure I miss anything. It's all out there, reminding me how bollocks most of it was...

ChristineSH (chrissie1068), Friday, 27 June 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Even though they're not entirely gone, I miss platform shoes already. I like being taller.

Kim (Kim), Friday, 27 June 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

They're still very popular where I live.

Christine 'Green Leafy Dragon' Indigo (cindigo), Friday, 27 June 2003 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I notice people here are still wearing them, but suddenly in the stores, you can't buy them.

all of them!

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 27 June 2003 06:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Cross Colors, Compton hats, black adidas shell + black lipstick on sluts (it predated the goth boom and was a surefire banner of "i listen to Master P and i take it like a champion"), exhaust jeans, neon bead friendship bracelets.

Ramosi, Friday, 27 June 2003 06:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I miss grunge, I was in style back then.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 27 June 2003 07:11 (twenty-two years ago)

a lot of irony here. what I truly miss is '95ish Gucci influenced stuff. Y'know Halston-Ford etc.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 27 June 2003 07:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i can 'truly miss' something and not acutally want to wear it myself

oops (Oops), Friday, 27 June 2003 07:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I searched for 'puffball skirts' & all I got was this....

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 27 June 2003 07:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i really miss bomber fashion - massive jeans and baseball caps worn ever so lightly.

*snickers*

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Friday, 27 June 2003 07:35 (twenty-two years ago)

slapbands really were the shit at one stage. as was the buttoning of the top of one's flannel shirt.

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Friday, 27 June 2003 07:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Mini-crini - that whole West End Girls thing - was really easy: black lycra or wool turtleneck, overblown diamante necklaces, cropped black jacket or fitted New Look (Dior not cheapo British shop) jacket, short ruffled skirt, black and white hoop tights, and five-buckle extreme Chelsea boots TOGETHER was an outfit I wore A LOT. And members of New Order and Echo and the Bunnymen teased me for looking too much like:

http://www.gocontinental.com/photos2/swingout2a.jpg

But people, the denim ruffle skirts worn with leggings and stilettoes look is BACK in the streets of HOXTON so there.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 27 June 2003 08:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it bad to think that the shirts worn by moseley's blackshirts are really good and would be incredible in red,

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Friday, 27 June 2003 08:40 (twenty-two years ago)

rollers and blunnies - the shoes of the early 90s.

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Friday, 27 June 2003 09:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I miss the early nineties Euro-hip hop fashion, you know, über-wide trousers and big sweatshirts with weird pictures or patterns in 'em. And the assortment of colours! Orange, light green, light blue, even pink! It's the only time in my life I've looked cool wearing a pair of orange jeans the size of a tent.

Compared to that, the US hip hop fashion always looked bland to me.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 27 June 2003 10:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i really loved the 'skidz' that i had in middle school. they were basically pyjama pants in wild plaid and crazy colors, and were all the rage as they were mainstream 'hammer pants.' and yes, i wore mine when i saw M.C. Hammer live.

colette (a2lette), Friday, 27 June 2003 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

doc martens. also - combat trousers (even though they're back now) just don't feel the same as they did a few years ago.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 27 June 2003 11:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 27 June 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Well they should.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 27 June 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I miss those steam-powered spaceships.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 27 June 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I would fucking LOVE to have that general washington outfit. that shit is sexxxxxy.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 27 June 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Adam Ant has no boobs!

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 27 June 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I miss that brief period of time in the early 90's when men could get away with flowered prints.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 27 June 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Michael, you can still do that in Hawaii!

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 27 June 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

But I don't live in Hawaii! Sob.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 27 June 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

The start of this thread reminded me I had a ruffled denim ACID WASHED skirt in the 80s. I was, for a brief moment, rather cool.

I've seen a few of denim/other short ruffled skirts around here.. in Providence.. I got a bright purple one & I gotta wait for the day when I get the nerve to wear it. anyhow the people in question are film students and I think a lot of them are from NYC.

oops (Oops), Saturday, 28 June 2003 06:28 (twenty-two years ago)

When I was little and daydreaming of the life of a grown-up preppy (complete with the Buick and the fabulous job with a private office in a gleaming office building!), I thought this was the coolest ensemble ever:

http://deanna.ladyinterference.com/ilx/t-shirt_drwng.gif
This basic striped blue & white cotton t-shirt

http://deanna.ladyinterference.com/ilx/shell_drwng.gif
This white shell made out of a light cottony fabric

http://deanna.ladyinterference.com/ilx/pants_drwng.gif
This pair of loose-fitting, stretchy, medium blue jeans

http://deanna.ladyinterference.com/ilx/shoes_drwng.gif
This pair of white canvas shoes

Obviously these aren't actual photos -- they're quick sketches I whipped up because I didn't want to spend hours upon hours searching for exactly what I was talking about.

*sighs* I still think this would be a nice outfit to wear.

Innocent Dreamer (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 28 June 2003 08:16 (twenty-two years ago)

nice drawings dee!

I always like it when goth stuff comes back in style, and it's almost as good when it goes out of style because then you can get all the stuff on discount.

I have a great skirt that's black acidwashed denim on the yoke and then two big white muslin ruffles for the rest of the skirt. I remember wearing it when I was 13 (in 1988) and a trucker tried to pick me up while I was walking to the store (next to the truck stop). At the time I was hugely flattered but obv now it's totally creepy!

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 28 June 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank you teeny! Even though they don't seem to fit into the requirements of the original topic?

I'll just say that I miss the "I'm a corporate giant with a fabulous weekend home on the coast and I wear a lot of blues and whites and pastels with little bits of black here and there and by the way wasn't Gordon Gekko of Wall Street the best on-screen hero ever?" genre of fashion. Now that I'm alert and not swinging to and fro. :)

Innocent Dreamer (Dee the Lurker), Saturday, 28 June 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Garters and fishnets are out!?!

Carey (Carey), Saturday, 28 June 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 28 June 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Mount Pleasant was supposed to be a rather sketchy neighborhood when I lived there. But one of the most alarming aspects was the acid-washed denim and mullets so many of the Salvadorean men wore. (shudders at the memories)
