stir-craziness

I've now been in Seattle two weeks and aside from having drinks w/a friend last Friday I haven't gone out yet. I've spent about 10-14 hours in the office almost every day since I started work, far far more than I actually need to be here; whenever I've been here telling myself to work on stuff I just dick around on the computer. I am incredibly restless but can't drag myself out of here until everything is closed. This worries me greatly. Should it?

I think some of it is shellshock from the really abrupt change I made--a really active social life in NYC, working from home, plenty of work to do, more or less a routine w/o a routine--to here, where the weather's great, the city is physically gorgeous, I know people, but don't fucking know where/how to begin. I think if you read the Lifter Puller thread on ILM where Josh and I argue you can see some of that frustration coming out.

Matos, m'friend -- just call or e-mail Donut Bitch and ask to meet up for a drink or a meal. Take a nice small step and know that you've already done quite a lot in a high profile/pressure job, and trust me -- if there's one thing DB will provide for you, it's a chance for good low key conversation with humor and empathy about anything and everything.

out of school here, but i'll essay...

a routine w/o a routine is effortless, and can (therefore?) feel very good. but it's still a structure even if it doesn't look like it. leaving the routine means leaving the structure (plus, more latitude means that structure is not imposed), and thus a new structure requires initiative/creativity/design.

(or just ignore it for long periods of time and end up posting insane road trip itineraries to message board)

Don't worry about it yet, MM - you're bedding in. I would advise against getting in a pattern of 60-hour work weeks, especially if people might start expecting you to be there at 8pm every day. But you don't need to get your lifestyle set the way you want it after a fortnight!

I'll see your winter stir-crazies and raise you "I have lived in Mississippi for 11 1/2 consecutive years" crazies.

i guess it'll get better, i should stop complaining. someday not too long from now the sidewalks won't be covered in an ice floe of dog urine slush.

Advice from a pro agoraphobe: open the windows, and/or have pretend smoke breaks where you stand outside for 10 minutes breathing deeply.
