coke vs water FITE

Just got this as an e-mail but i thought it was interesting - if only from a "handy hints" point of view

WATER
1. 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. (Likely applies to half
world population.)

2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often
mistaken for hunger.

3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's metabolism as much as 3%.

4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100%
of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.

5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could
significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.

7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory,
trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or
on a printed page.

8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by
45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50%less
likely to develop bladder cancer. Are you drinking the amount of water you
should every day?

COKE
1. In many states (in the USA) the highway patrol carries two gallons of
Coke in the trunk to remove blood from the highway after a car accident.

2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of coke and it will be gone in two
days.

3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and let
the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in
Coke removes stains from vitreous china.

4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a
rumpled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.

5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola
over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.

6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the
rusted bolt for several minutes.

7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan, wrap
the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before the ham is
finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for
a sumptuous brown gravy.

8. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of coke into a load of
greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The
Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean road haze from
your windshield.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION:
1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. Its pH is 2.8. It
will dissolve a nail in about four days. Phosphoric acid also leaches
calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase in
osteoporosis.

2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial truck must
use the Hazardous Material place cards reserved for highly corrosive
materials.

3. The distributors of coke have been using it to clean the engines of
their trucks for about 20 years!

Now the question is, would YOU like a glass of water or Coke?

james (james), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 06:14 (twenty-two years ago)

URBAN LEGEND ALERT!

Don't believe everything you read read on the InterWeb.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 06:21 (twenty-two years ago)

(Anyone who conducts these experiments will find himself at the end of two days with a whole tooth, a whole nail, and one very soggy t-bone.)

mmmm soggy t-bone

But Tuomas - what if this page was written by THE MAN, the coke peddling MAN????

james (james), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 06:28 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.snopes.com is a trustworthy database that of urban legends, and most of the times it does a good job in finding out whether they're true or not (some of them actually are). Whenever you find "information" like this, you should consult snopes before you start spreading it.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 06:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I know you're just kidding. :)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 06:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Toumas i'll gladly take on those coke magnets - im there own personal Erin Bronko...something or over...evitch nightmare 8¬]

james (james), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 06:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey kids... Wanna know what phosphroric acid tastes like? Remember, you didn't get it from me!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 06:54 (twenty-two years ago)

so is all the stuff about water true?

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 06:56 (twenty-two years ago)

nah water will fuck your shit UP

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 06:58 (twenty-two years ago)

about four years ago i was working at a record store that was next door to a pizza place. we had a deal that we'd give them 10% off their purchases if they'd give us free refills on soda all day long. so i was drinking 3-5 cokes a day. and then one day i came into work and i went to the bathroom and pissed blood. it also felt like i had been kicked in the balls really hard (this feeling lasted about 2 weeks). i went to the doctor and they tried to diagnose me with all sorts of things (hepatitis c?). finally after an mri and some other crazy tests, they told me i had a kidney stone. they broke it up with sonic waves and i'm fine now, but they told me the probable cause for this was the food coloring in all the coke i drank stripped the calcium from my bones and deposited it into my poor kidney.

that is all

JasonD (JasonD), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 07:00 (twenty-two years ago)

No, it's not true.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 07:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, you found that link by yourself. Sorry for the crosspost.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 07:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know how bad Coke/soda is for me, but I know damn well it's not _good_ for me and I can easily go without it. So I do, bar the occasional Mr. Pibb or Wild Cherry Pepsi.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 07:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Coke is gross and water roXor. Easy.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 07:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I had already thrown away all my household cleaning products when I read the snopes articles. Gah.

(the author of one of the sources in the snopes water article is called Fereydoon Batmanghelidj, hee.)

Mark C (Mark C), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 07:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, fuck a bunch of 8-10 cups a day, I'm talking like 2 gallons every day! I'm a waterholic!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

snopes doesn't mention this but this was my first tipoff:
1. In many states (in the USA) the highway patrol carries two gallons of Coke in the trunk to remove blood from the highway after a car accident.

Coke is not sold by the gallon, pint, or quart.

I hate sweet drinks.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I drink about three litres of water a day and several cans of (diet) coke. I imagine that my kidneys are like scud missiles in size and power

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

water is boring and i need my sucrose-phosphoric rush - just hook it to my veins dammit. i trust medical science to vanquish problems such as bad teeth, damaged bones and diabetes in the near future anyway.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

8. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of coke into a load of
greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The

your windshield.

hahahaha!! ketchup works grebt as a detergent also

mustard is a good fabric softener

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I too drink massive amounts of water. Probably about four liters a day. Plus coffee. I pee a whole lot, too, which I like since otherwise I'd just sit in one spot all day.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

ketchup works grebt as a detergent also

so it's the high-fructose corn syrup?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I can find the exact date when Americans started becoming a nation of people who ought to have WIDE LOAD bumper stickers on their backsides. In the summer of 1977 a lot of restaurants stopped giving customers those initial, complimentary glasses of ice water due to 'water shortages' but clearly some form of transubstantiation took place and thirsty people ordered Cokes as replacement. Which were full of H2O and NOT FREE. If America collectively looked back (apart from seeing a load of FATASS) this would be a no-brainer, but...

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

so it's the high-fructose corn syrup?

haha that must be it! the part about putting it in engines made me larf...sugary substances are horrible for combustion cuz they turn to gross icky sticky carbon

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

4. One glass of water will shut down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100%
of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.

This is almost certainly false. Water does nothing to alleve hunger.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate soda, so water for me, please!

When I was little, once my dad spilled a can of orange soda on his truck's steering wheel. When he cleaned it off, these stains that he was previously unable to remove magical disappeared.

rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

But what did he wash it off with? WATER!

(er, did he?)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

the dehydration of sugar:

C12H22O11 ---> 12C + 11H2O

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

my guess is the orange soda worked for the same reason that any kind of soda water would, cuz of the dissolved CO2 = carbonic acid

also orange soda is magical

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Magical or just plain SCARY???

rosemary (rosemary), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I pick tea! Seriously, for some reason drinking water makes me kind of nauseous. I still drink water to stay hydrated, but too much makes me feel ill.

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 16:04 (twenty-two years ago)

this thread makes me want to run around the office shouting "COKE! GIVE ME COKE!" like that tart in the "JUICE! GIVE ME JUICE!" ad.

I might even say say "this is where we add the vodka" in a treacly coo. before I get fired.

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

oh man i hate that advert...with its quasi-'Hot In herre' soundtrack

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I drink much water and some soda. But Coke = eh. It's Mountain Dew for me, lads and lassies, and make it snappy. But with all the coffee I drink, I can only handle one soda in the aft. or I get a huge headache etc. I'm really really old, apparently. I also fall asleep early, my corns can predict the rains, and I get excited about Matlock.

Neudonym, Tuesday, 1 July 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Coke makes my whole mouth feel disgusting. I don't really drink much water either; there's enough water in the food I eat.

Kris (aqueduct), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

think I can find the exact date when Americans started becoming a nation of people who ought to have WIDE LOAD bumper stickers on their backsides.

There's no fat in Coke, right? How would it make people fat?

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Personally, water most of the time for me. Or a bit of wine or beer here and there. SPARKLING water = heaven.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

WATER KILLS

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I drink liquids from the moment I get up to the moment I go to sleep. Start off in the morning with a big glass of water. Then a cup of coffee. Then water water water all day long, usually about 3 liters. Then I get home from work, and it's iced tea. Later, I choose between mineral water, wine, beer, or scotch. Then bed. I probably pee 15 times a day.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Oops: Coke, and most other soft drinks, are quite full of calories from all the sugar they have.

Dan I., Tuesday, 1 July 2003 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't often drink Coke but this thread gave me pangs and I got a can from the machine. I think this is reverse psychology viral marketing.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

kephm, Tuesday, 1 July 2003 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Given that I HATE coke and all soda, water.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 1 July 2003 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I gotta have coffee and/or Diet Coke if life as I know it is to go on. But because I know what caffeine does to a person, I try to get enough water.

And the "water kills hunger pangs" myth isn't entirely true, but a good cold drink of water, in my experience, does help more reasonably assess just how hungry you are.

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
If you mix coke and milk together and drink it, you die.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

Diet Coke, you might be able to get away with, Pepsi you'll be gravely ill, but remember kids, full-fat coke mixed 50/50 with milk is LETHAL. Don't try it. Or you'l die.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

What about orange juice with beer?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

Cola and milk, eh? So everyone who drinks this will die?

StanM (StanM), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

Ok, it's not 50/50. The Kahlua will save you, I guess.

StanM (StanM), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

All those lies are perpetuated by the powerful and sinister water lobby!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 29 July 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

Water: worse than heroin.

i'm not sure what's funny here. fereydoon is a common iranian name and batmanglij is not unusual either.

i was gonna post this on the "mark c: pathetic little man" thread on the noise board but post-"noise dude superwang" thread i guess it's considered polite to call people out to their face. cause people mocking foreign names really gets my goat.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 30 July 2005 05:13 (twenty years ago)

you've gotta admit it'd be cool to have "batman" as part of your last name.

mark c is an idiot too tho

3, Saturday, 30 July 2005 05:23 (twenty years ago)

yeah you're right jody, i guess in my uptightness i see casually offensive racists where there are merely casually offensiveness morons.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 30 July 2005 05:26 (twenty years ago)

I have to admit I did laugh at that comment too, oops... I mean wtf!?

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 30 July 2005 05:26 (twenty years ago)

yeah, it's OK. i guess if people weren't ignorant, there'd be nothing to laugh at on the internet.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 30 July 2005 05:41 (twenty years ago)

i mean, nobody to laugh with. i mean, i think that's what i mean.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 30 July 2005 05:41 (twenty years ago)

Foreign names, schmoreign names. I'll make fun of anybody's name. Look at my name for fuck's sake.

As an added bonus, if you don't already know, my middle name is "Bernard."

Laugh, motherfuckers. I mean it. Anybody not laughing in five minutes is gonna wear their ass for a hat.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 30 July 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

people mocking foreign names really gets my goat.

But ... hang on a minute! Mark C *has* a foreign name himself! Maybe he mocks himself in the bath or something.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Saturday, 30 July 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

No, last I heard Mark C soaked himself in two gallons of coke to see if he'd disappear. ;-)))

We mix coke with beer here. It used to be a popular drink for teenagers who couldn't handle the taste of alcohol/beer. Never tried it.

nathalie sans denouement (stevie nixed), Saturday, 30 July 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

That sounds a bit like shandy, but ... minging!

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Saturday, 30 July 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

"there's no fat in coke, so it can't make me fat" is something several people have said to me. you were supposed to laugh at it.
ethan, you're still a fantastic jackass. congrats.

oops (Oops), Sunday, 31 July 2005 06:14 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
There are 50 ilx threads with coke in the title! I picked this one.

Anyway, for the last week or so I've noticed a tingly numbing sensation across my upper lip. Today I realised that I didn't have it when I woke up in the morning so I've been waiting for it to kick in and it started about 10 minutes after I drank a can of Coke. It's like that feeling you get is you've got a cold sore coming or if you've been a bit lively with the razor and hot water in the morning.

Has anyone else ever heard of this coke related sensation? Googling coke+numb sensation obv. gives lots of answers for the wrong kind of coke.

I may have to give up my daily diet coke :(

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Saturday, 21 October 2006 03:16 (nineteen years ago)

My first car had a radio speaker situated in the upper dashboard that rattled constantly. By accident a large coke was spilled into it and the speaker stopped working for a few days. When it came back to life it sounded perfect.

The two best ways to consume a coke in my book are 1.) with rum and 2.) flat.

jim wentworth (wench), Saturday, 21 October 2006 04:04 (nineteen years ago)

A glass of Coke followed by a glass of water is a great hangover/ come-down cure.

Johnny B Was Quizzical (Johnney B), Saturday, 21 October 2006 11:48 (nineteen years ago)

Anyway, for the last week or so I've noticed a tingly numbing sensation across my upper lip

I had that about three months ago. Developed into a kind of paralysis of the face, with similar symptoms in the abdomen - I mean, I felt paralysed, though I wasn't, the muscles moved, felt like I'd just come out of the dentist. It was horrible. Had blood tests, every kind of test, thought I had a brain tumour, had an appointment with a neurologist, but before then it just faded away... after six weeks or so.

Anyway, I drink a LOT of Coke. Don't think it had anything to do with that though.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Saturday, 21 October 2006 12:15 (nineteen years ago)

coke is evil stuff, Ive had a simalr reaction with the lip thing but my nervous system is a little shot, and I drink it by the gallon. also you might have low blood sugar. or not. id be surprised if its the can though.
