How do I 'tape' things off the internet?

If I'm listening to a radio broadcast how can I record it? eg. on the BBC. I guess what I'm saying is what software can I use to create a kind of audio clipboard on my pc? Does this make sense at all?

There was a thing about this in the Guardian's Online section last Thursday. Go here and scroll down to Backchat.

Trying to do the same thing last year I downloaded this thing. It was pretty good, but it looks like there are various tools around that'll do the same thing for free.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, I was going to mention that Guardian piece. Personally, I just use the headphone jack and connect it to my minidisc recorder. What a luddite I am.

if you have a program like Total Recorder, or something more sophisticated like Sound Forge or Goldwave, you can record 'what you hear' on your computer and save as wav, mp3 etc.

alternatively, its possible to locate the file that is being streamed and make it download to your PC instead. Right-click 'save target as' is the simplest way tho this wont always work (probably not on BBC site) - see Mike Taylor's recent thread on similar topic for how to get the location of the file on the webserver to see if you can download it.

For Mac OS X, I recommend Audio Hijack. I've had pretty good luck with it.
