There is a place in my town called the Jerusale Cafe where you can buy real imports from Egypt, Saudi Arabia etc. . They make you a deliscious falael and you can even buy a hookah. There drink called "Vito" . Its berry soda , comes in a can that looks like its from the 60s. Thank goodness for such places. I'm so glad they don't just sell Coke, how disappointing that would be! In light of the WTC tradgedy I can't help but think of the American influence on places that already have their own way of living. Why are other peoples both attracted to and repulsed by American ways? Its like there is resentment and desire.

As someone who finds great joy in diffrences of cultures and diversity, I hate when peoples loose their ethnic traditions in favor of "The American Way". I am all for inter -relations between all cultures, but does this mean we all have to drink the same soda?

The Jerusalem Cafe was hassled after the WTC attacks, by local bastards. I wonder if they will take their neat store somewhere else now. What a sad thing it would be. America not only spreads itself everywhere, but also rejects foreign elemnts within.

Sure "The American Way" is to assimilate cultures. It is the largest nation of immigrants in the world after all. After all this is partially what Bin Laden and hardline Islamic Extremists are worried about. If you can reconcile living an Islamic life in the prosperity of diverse society of Western nations then you are likely to be open minded and not attracted to more fundamentalist attitudes. Loss of power and influence for extremist follows.

it would be great if it happened like that Pete, but what about those muslim youth leaders who are currently stirring up shit in the UK (another nation of immigrants). the fact that most of them have lived here ALL THEIR LIVES without problems reconciling their heritage and their present situation doesn't seem to stop them from suddenly wanting to smash western culture. i know they're in a minority but i still find it worrying.

Ah, these people I know well. See Hanif Kureshi's My Son The Fanatic for an interesting depection on second generation extremists. The main route for the creation of such extremism is that old chestnut teenage rebellion. If the parents have assimilated (horrible word actually) into Western culture the kids feel that they have been sold out of their birth-right. Freshers are often targetted in this way, so its one of my jobs to keep them off campus. I've thrown out many an Al-Mujheradin supporter in the past - and daresay I will be tangling with them again next week. Them and the London Church Of Christ...

Interesting...youth rebel to HAVE blue jeans and to GET RID of them. I guess whatever seems more rebellious at the time.

Geoff mistaking a thread for one about bestiality?? Astounding!

I frequently confuse the word "cuttlefish" with "silverfish" and was therefore gagging myself senseless before realizing I was being dumb.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 18 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You are not dumb, Dan, just sick like dog. See soup thread. ;-)
