The last thing Canada/BC/Vancouver needs is a big money-waster like this.
Yuck. Too much money has been spent already.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't want them in London.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

It looks almost inevitable at this point.
Oh well, note to self: avoid Western Canada (or hell, Canada in general) for the next ten years.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

BOOOO, we got 'em.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Coming in 2011: a bunch of useless, unwanted, forgotten structures in the Vancouver area; a big fat hole in the Can/Prov economy; ridiculous new prov taxes; even more ridiculously inflated property costs in the Lower Mainland.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Based on some of my friends' experiences in Atlanta, I'd say you're right. On the plus side, it doesn't take that long to subside. Once the circus leaves town, it's gone in a hurry. Leaving behind only mountains of public debt.

JesseFox (JesseFox), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Can't wait for the opening ceremonies. Millions of bongs hoisted aloft in tribute.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm just really glad it wasn't London!

kate (kate), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

insert legal gay marriage:figure skating joke

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

This is the winter olympics, right. There are very few places that can host these so chances are it'll be back in Canada again by 2030.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't the Montreal Olympics back in 1970-mumble make the city completely bankrupt?

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Houston lost its bid, but we're gettin' the Final Four in 2011!

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate, sorry, but London is still in the running for the 2012 Summer Games.
Vancouver got the 2010 Winter Games.
Ugh, the summer games are a much bigger shitstorm than the winter games, and you have my condolences.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Tampa Bay made a bid for the 2012 Olympics. My company put the proposal together so I got to see it and I'm very glad we didn't get it. Not that Tampa Bay had much of a chance. Olympics are dud.

fletrejet, Wednesday, 2 July 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, Goodbye East Hastings St. In Downtown Vancouver! Oh, they'll just send all the crackheads somewhere... not a problem.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe they'll put together a spinoff the Skytrain, called the Hightrain. Just a one way train from East Hastings St. to Northwest Surrey.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Toronto could have used them a few years back. They were going to use them as an excuse to build apartment buildings on the more or less abadoned railyards around Union. And we could have gotten a real soccer pitch for our national team. The timing is now long gone.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

apparently chicago politicians have no interest in the olympics for reasons stated above. this makes me happy.

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I am so glad that DC-Baltimore's 2012 Olympics bid was rejected. Under "ordinary" circumstances it's already impossible to get from any point a to be around here.

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 2 July 2003 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

fletrejet - I was amazed at the Tampa/Orlando bid for the 2012 Olympics - I can't imagine all of those poor athletes witling in the glorious Floridian humidity, combined with the afternoon thunderstorms - to say nothing of the I4 congestion from hell that would happen. And I heard it was pitched as being moderate weather?

I'm Passing Open Windows (Ms Laura), Thursday, 3 July 2003 03:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i hate what the olympics have become.

anthony easton (anthony), Thursday, 3 July 2003 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Why can't they go back to being what they really started out as? Which was, of course, one more chance for men to get naked and wrestle!
