No wonder it sucks worse than last time-- I've only got 10.0.4 now. I will now upgrade to Jaguar and then to 10.2.6. The furthest I had upgraded in the past was 10.2.3, so hopefully 10.2.6 will be faster.
― Scaredy cat (Natola), Thursday, 3 July 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)
Not true. I have a G4 Quicksilver with all new software (Adobe and Macromedia studio packs). OS9 is much snappier when you drag a window in the interface, works with all older typefaces and is easier to look at (legibility). The only thing "outdated" about it from my perspective is an occasional crash, but I'm not trying to set up a network or a web server, either. FWIW, I still have not worked in a studio or with another designer that is using OSX on any project ever (and the past year and a half I was temping and freelancing).

Ah, but that's what i mean by legacy issues - you need to use it for your typefaces (It was the latter, rather than former though).
I would swap all the snappiness in the world for stability however.
I absolutely despise using the OS 8+9 machines at work, and they were one of the reasons I began to hate using Macs in general. Quark, Photoshop and even the bloody finder constantly astound me with their penchant for crashing at almost every conceivable worst moment. To contrast, my girlfriends (pretty underpowered by modern standards) laptop is a joy to use, just fast enough to give good response, and I have never seen a full system crash on 10.2.5.

At random times - usually when I've got iTunes or AIM and another program going - all my USB stuff quits working. The monitor does fine and the computer is still running normally, but my speakers, mouse, keyboard, scanner and printer die.
And I'm not willing to pony up their bullshit $50 fee to find out why the computer they built isn't working. They tried to get me to pay when the original hard drive slipped a bearing.

We're on the moveable-screen robot iMac runnin' OS 10.2.somethin'-or-other. OS 10 has some annoying cosmetic features - it feels kinda willfully "extreme!" in a way I don't like - but the operating system on the whole is superior to older Macs, like way way.

I love my 9.2.2, especially since most of my music software runs beautifully on it and switching to X would mean losing about half of my current tools. But I guess within the year I'll have to upgrade from my Pismo Powerbook to something more "modern".
― Jay Vee (Manon_70), Thursday, 3 July 2003 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)
I don't particularly like the way OS X looks. I don't think it's particularly worse than any other MacOS, except it comes with more shit to gloop up and slow down the interface.
― Stuart (Stuart), Thursday, 3 July 2003 03:39 (twenty-two years ago)
Digitool is supposed to have an OSX verison of MCL out real soon, and the next time I upgrade my hardware I'll make the switch to OSX. I find the look of it distracting, but it will probably become invisible to me once I start using it regularly.
― Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Thursday, 3 July 2003 03:53 (twenty-two years ago)
My rule of thumb is that if it's beige, do not put OS X on it.
You will also want at least 384MB of RAM
― Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 3 July 2003 05:08 (twenty-two years ago)
I'm fully OS , no OS 9 at all on my machine. It is excellent and keeps getting better and better. You do have to learn a completely new way of doing things though. I'd say 512Mb is a sensible minimum RAM requirement for OS X.

The most useful thing that MacOS X has allowed me to do is to run sendmail. Something that is so useful if you plug onbes computer into different networks all the time.
Poppy, that keys out of order hard driver error is fairly common, it happened to me. OS X is really sensitive to it. YOu should fix it before it gets worse (it can cause a flashing questionmark on startup). A programme called disk warrior can fix it.

Want maybe, need no. I have 256MB and it's snappy as anything, except when I'm arsing around a lot in Photoshop, maybe, but hey.. Photoshop.

PowerBook G3 Series (Bronze keyboard)The PowerBook G3 Series (Bronze keyboard) (M5343) also has the large, white Apple logo. The main visual difference is the keyboard, which has a translucent bronze color. The computer has a single PC Card slot on the left side, no exposed modem port, two USB ports, and is slimmer than the PowerBook G3 Series computer. The ports on the back of the computer are fully covered by a single door.

Mary, if you have Panther you don't need Jaguar or regular 10. Panther is just the code/marketing name that Apple uses in addition to "Mac OS X 10.3"
