google instant

whoa

friends don't understand us, adults don't understand us (zorn_bond.mp3), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 18:15 (fifteen years ago)

Google Instant is a new search enhancement that shows results as you type. We are pushing the limits of our technology and infrastructure to help you get better search results, faster. Our key technical insight was that people type slowly, but read quickly, typically taking 300 milliseconds between keystrokes, but only 30 milliseconds (a tenth of the time!) to glance at another part of the page. This means that you can scan a results page while you type.

The most obvious change is that you get to the right content much faster than before because you don’t have to finish typing your full search term, or even press “search.” Another shift is that seeing results as you type helps you formulate a better search term by providing instant feedback. You can now adapt your search on the fly until the results match exactly what you want. In time, we may wonder how search ever worked in any other way.

Upt0eleven, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 19:12 (fifteen years ago)

Is it just me or does this not work in Google's very own Chrome? I am signed in on the same Google account on Chrome and on Firefox and only seeing it on FF.

vampire headphase (a passing spacecadet), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 19:18 (fifteen years ago)

Hm, their webpage says it works in Chrome. Maybe I'm on an old version. I permanently get this feeling that I don't really know how to set Chrome up properly, but when I go back to other browsers I end up being confused that they're not like Chrome.

vampire headphase (a passing spacecadet), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 19:23 (fifteen years ago)

i don't think every account has this yet

Gulab jamun (Gulab Jamun) into the syrup please. (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 19:27 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I have two accounts, and one has this on FF and the other doesn't, but neither have it on Chrome. But apparently I was running an old version of Chrome because I thought it auto-updated itself, except I have too many slow downloads running to restart. So, don't mind me talking to myself here like the crazy old cat lady that I am. Carry on, everyone!

vampire headphase (a passing spacecadet), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 19:29 (fifteen years ago)

This is annoying and is going to confuse a lot of people. Was it really such a chore to press enter after searching for something?

friends don't understand us, adults don't understand us (zorn_bond.mp3), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 23:02 (fifteen years ago)

I don't suppose this will make a huge difference to those of us who type with more than one finger. But ey who knows.

Just had a very convincing scammer almost take control of my Google account, aka my whole life. If it's urgent and your account is at risk and no you can't call me back on a verifiable Google number, probably just hang up.
