Getting Laid (off)

So I found out yesterday that on Monday I will be getting laid off. I've worked for this company (which was bought by ClearChannel a month or so after I started) for three years, and it's been uniformly shitty (bad pay, no promotion). But still, a paycheck you hate is better than none at all, right? The severance package I get will be shitty, that's a certainty, and I have zero savings. So I'm not really sure what I will do. One question, though: I've been told that if you want to freelance while getting unemployment, you have to get permission from the unemployment office. Is that true? My hope is that I can get unemployment and continue to freelance (which I do regularly -- a piece or two a week) while I look for a magazine position. I dunno.Other than that I'm fucking lost. This'll be the first time I've been jobless since I was 16, when I first started working.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

is there a reason why you have no savings?

Stuart (Stuart), Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:16 (twenty-two years ago)

yancy, in canada, you are allowed to freelance whilst collecting unemployment - they just take the monies made off the cheque they give you each month. phone the ui office and find out.

and two: HE LIVES IN NYC FOR FUCK'S SAKE. WHO HAS SAVINGS? I DON'T.

doom-e, Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Stuart is helpful!

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

That's horrible, Yanc3y. Hopefully a job will come along very soon.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Stuart, I have no savings cuz I live in NYC and my job paid shit. And I'm paying off student loans. I'm not the best with money, but I'm also certainly not the worst.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

contact the bank re: your student loan, in canada and england, you are allowed off the payments until you are gainfully employed again. again, you should be phoning yer bank with regards to that information.

doom-e, Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it possible to get the freelance work "under the table"?

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

that's the third option - why i know someone who gets u.i. and has the magazine make all cheques out to his significant other...

doom-e, Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

MARINES

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

i've already taken care of the loans thing. did that this morning. thanks for reminding me tho, doomie.

and no, i can't get the freelance stuff under the table, unless it's through uk mags (a friend of mine was freelancing for nme while unemployed last year cuz they simply wired him the money).

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Millar yer being helpful!

Hahaha!

That was suggested to me by an Army friend when I was moaning about work. He almost got me hooked with the free education. But was talked out of it by the liberal friends. 'Why, Doom-e, that is just trapping the working classes, etc' 'B..but you have parents who pay for your education..'

do you get paid by cheque, yancey? i do when i freelance. or just get them to debit another person's account.

doom-e, Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry to hear it yancey.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom, you can pitch me on the Marines angle tonight, okay? I'd like some visual aids, if possible.

I do get paid by check, Doomie. I guess I could try doing that, but I'd like to be honest about the whole thing, if possible. I'm gonna call the unemployment office a bit later today.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

desperate solution: Move to NJ. I believe you can still collect Ny unemployment if you live in another state (my brother in law collected Georgia unemployment when he moved to Michigan). And with an out of state address NY will be none the wiser about your freelance work.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and thanks for the kind words everyone. I'm not feeling totally helpless, just kinda small, ya know? My girlfriend is amazing -- after I found out yesterday she decided that we needed to go get resume paper for me, and then we went to Barnes and Noble and wrote down editors, addys and phone numbers for a bunch of magazines. She's gonna make sure that I work hard at getting another job. And I definitely need someone to light a fire under my ass (I'm sooooo into that).

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

ack. o.k

it should be fine. in canada i freelanced and got u.i. - as long as i reported the income - they deducted it from the u.i. cheque it should be o.k. but i don't know the usa system.

don't worry yancy, you will be fine. if you get stuck there is always temping.

doom-e, Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Be sure to start paying the loans off again ASAP -- Student Loan vultures are not into charity, and your debt grows while they're "kindly" forbearing.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

with student loans, a 'friend' got into trouble and all you need to do is switch your bank account and unlist your telephone number. goodbye credit rating why HELLO FREEDOM!

doom-e, Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry yance, good luck with the search

H (Heruy), Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

student loans will be a low priority, simply cuz the interest rates are so low. yeah, it's compounding, but i think there will be more to worry about.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Uh... I believe it was only the early, unposted draft of my comment that said "Fucknugget, stash some away next time!" Calm down, people. I was just asking.

Stuart (Stuart), Thursday, 3 July 2003 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

In Washington state, you can even have a part-time job and still collect unemployment, though the amount you make for that job, per week, gets kinda deducted from your weekly unemployment check. (What I mean by "kinda", is that it's not a 1-to-1 loss, but you're still getting a smaller UI check.. there's this big huge chart you have to look up). However, if you work at least 40 hours during any week in Washington while collecting UI, they get all pissy and threaten to cut you off, period. (So, uh, I guess it's all about those 39 hr/week jobs, then)

Yanc3, if you can find somebody willing to p*y y** *nd*r th* t*bl* for freelance work, that's probably your best bet. But if not, I can't imagine New York UI has a vastly different policy than the above.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 3 July 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

That is an excellent summary, db. Thank you very much.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 3 July 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Keep yr chin up Yancey. I can't give any substantive help here (I'm useless) I'm afraid beyond kind thoughts, sorry. Take care.

Cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 3 July 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

you can get your student loans lowered and or held while unemployed can't you? And sorry Yancey, that blows. Start gambling on baseball.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 3 July 2003 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

(hehe Yancey, I was watching Baseball all the way over here in the UK and there was this real grousy looking guy called Weaver for New York who looked like he was going to cry - why?)

Cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 3 July 2003 16:33 (twenty-two years ago)

That's taken care of already, Chris. A forebearance period.

And David, thank you for the kindness.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 3 July 2003 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

And Jeff Weaver cries cuz to be a Yankee you have to cut yr hair and he has a Samson complex.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 3 July 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

are you going to listen to alot of bruce springsteen now, yancey? has anyone here written about daniel johnston, ive got to write about him. what does one say? i'm drifting OFF TOPIC! YIKES!

doom-e, Thursday, 3 July 2003 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, maybe tonite i should sit on my porch with a six pack and sob to darkness on the edge of town. it'll be the summer of yanc3mo!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 3 July 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

if you can manage it take time off working.

doom-e, Thursday, 3 July 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

so August 1rst i will officially be jobless for 2 years. i've been freelancing ever since. i was on unemployment for so long (i think i made 16k last year from just unemployment). the thing you do, since you're freelancing, is get everything paid in 1099s. they don't say when you worked, they just say how much you got paid for the year. you can easily work freelance and get unemployment, and knowone can or will know you're doing it. if they ever ask, you just say you did that work when you weren't on unemployment. i did it, as did all of my unemployed friends (all of them) and we're all fine.

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 3 July 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

ick, why did i write "knowone"?

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 3 July 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Intriguing, Jason. Yeah, my 1099s don't have dates, only amounts. So the way the unemployment office finds out if you've been freelancing is only via your taxes or if you tell them?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 3 July 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sorry to hear about this Yancey. I'm in a similar situation so perhaps can be of help. Similar to what the DB said above, every week you certify with NY State for unemployment. This is extremely easy and done over computer. (First you have to go to some meeting but after that it's all by computer.) They ask you how many days you have worked. If the answer is 0 you get a certain amount. If the answer is 1,2,3,or 4 they lower your payment incrementally. I think they also ask if you have earned over $400 in income that could include self-employment. It would seem that any income you make from freelancing as long as it under $400 a week is fine, you can get that and your UI, the only thing is to save all your checks and declare it on your taxes at the end of the year. Also, you should probably have UI take 10% out for taxes, so you don't have to pay taxes on it later. Disclaimer: I have followed the above policy and recently got a letter for the IRS which said blah blah independennt income blah blah you should re-tally your blah blah. I didn't really read it too carefully. If they want me to pay more $ shouldn't they just tell me how much? *Please do not read if you are a taxman.* Meanwhile, another hitch is that UI gets confused. Say you are a freelancer. One week you work 4 days a week, the next week you work 1 day a week. They don't understand. They think you had a 4 day a week gig and have given it up to pursue a one day a week gig. So they send you paperwork and you have to have your employers prove that everything is on the up and up. If you don't do this, they stop sending you $. Note to self: bring in paperwork.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 3 July 2003 17:42 (twenty-two years ago)

The IRS letter was in regards to last year or this?

And THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU Mary. That's fantastic that you went so in depth.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 3 July 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

don't tell them you're working. plain and simple. all the money you made from freelancing was made when you weren't on unemployment. get it?

at the end of the year, the employers you freelanced from will submit th 1099 to the tax people and you pay taxes on that. no one will know when you worked. so you pay taxes on it and you're set.

here's a problem though. 1099s don't take taxes out for you. so if i were you, right now set up a separate bank account and each check you get, stick maybe 1/4 or 1/3 into that account and don't touch it. you'll need this in the end of the year to pay your taxes (i had to pay about 4,500$ at the end of the year for all my freelancing stuff).

and another problem, but one maybe you'll just want to live with (which i'm doing), you're going to get charged (maybe 150$) for not filing quarterly. the government wants their money. if you dont' pay them regularly, you'll get fined at the end of the year. i think it's too much of a hassle and i'd rather just pay the fine.

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 3 July 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

My letter was in regards to last year but I received it recently and haven't dealt with it yet. NY State post-911 has been very generous about extending benefits. Note to self: check on the extension of benefits. No problem, Y3, let me know if if you any other questions.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 3 July 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Gotcha. Thanks again, Mary. I'll prolly email you shortly.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 3 July 2003 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I know nothing of your rights, obligations or opportunities, and can be of no help. But good luck, and I hope things don't get too tough, and I hope good things come along soon.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 3 July 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, sorry to hear about this Yance. This economy is fuckin' brutal. Good luck with everything.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 3 July 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Yancey I hope it works out for you dude.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 3 July 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

At the moment in the UK if you get declared bankrupt your student loans are wiped out, I don't know if there's something similar in the US or what the wider implications are for your financial state to be honest, just thinking out loud really.

Matt (Matt), Friday, 4 July 2003 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom, you can pitch me on the Marines angle tonight, okay? I'd like some visual aids, if possible.

Haha, you should go join the Coast Guard! :-) You get to run around fishing dumb boaters out of the water & escorting sailing races.

lyra (lyra), Friday, 4 July 2003 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

As far as unemployment insurance, I don't think I have much good advice, but you're a great writer Y3. So I hope you get lots of freelance jobs- good luck!!

lyra (lyra), Friday, 4 July 2003 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

FUCKING LAY ME OFF ALREADY CLEARCHANNEL!!! I've been waiting for the ax all morning and nada, except an IT guy mysteriously came by to note the serial numbers on my computer for "inventory." I wanted to come in, get laid off and then go back to bed, but it looks like they're gonna drag this out, maybe until Friday (I'm not sposed to know I'm getting axed). Argh. This is fucking frustrating.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 7 July 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeep! Only just read this. Damn sorry to hear about this sir -- no good advice from me to give, I fear, so my best wishes.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 7 July 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

It's pretty insulting, too. You'd think employers would be more aware about an employee's "sixth sense" by now.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 7 July 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Now it looks like they aren't gonna pull the trigger for another 2-4 weeks. This is fucking frustrating as fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 7 July 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry teeny, I didn't mean to be unnecessarily harsh.

hstencil, Monday, 14 July 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I still think pimpin's the way to go.

hstencil, Monday, 14 July 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

no prob, and you're probably correct re: the pimpin'.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 14 July 2003 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Obv. apply for unemployment, you'd have to be on crack not to. But yeah, it is based on what you made previously...

(teeny that was very gracious of you and the only reason I started busting his balls--I mean, jesus, Joel)

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 14 July 2003 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's the last Berliniamsburg this Sat, FWIW

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 14 July 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes it is :(

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 14 July 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

(Ally and Yanc3y: WIT at Berliniansburg was where I was at 2 weeks ago, remember? And Soviet at Knitting Factory is where I was at on Halloween, waiting for Stereo Total to come on. )

waitingfortheunemploymenttorunout (Mary), Monday, 14 July 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

so how much notice should I give my boss? two weeks? a month? more? will work getter easier or harder once I tell her?

amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 14 July 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

(haha MarySlackerSailorMoon: it is like we live in a perpetual time warp, as Gareth pointed out that last time he was in NYC, it was a week before a W.I.T. show at Berliniansburg too!)

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 14 July 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Teeny, thanks for the offer. Unfortunately I think working at a label could hurt my "integrity" (notice it's in quotes) as a writer. But maybe not. I wanted to ask my mentor about that.

Last week I applied for a job that would be UNBELIEVABLY perfect, and I know someone at this magazine and my mentor's good friends with their managing editor and etc., etc. So this is where all my eggs are for now. If I get that, my life would be amazingly better. But it's kind of a longshot, as I'm sure thousands will apply (they did the last time this mag had an opening).

And stence, thanks for the optimism. I'm not feeling too down about things now, most likely cuz maybe some day I too can have Bill Calahan sleeping on my couch! Huzzah!

And unemployment has perks! I went to the optomitrist to load up on contacts before my insurance runs out, and I mentioned to my doctor my predicament. He proceeded to load me up with two bags full of contacts and free stuff, and only charged me $10 for everything! And he gave me all sorts of advice about whether or not to get COBRA (he says statistically at my age there isn't a real reason to have insurance, so if I can't afford it (I can't) then abstain) and told me to visit again even if I wasn't insured. "We'll work things out," he said. I wanted to kiss him!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 14 July 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

And the stars agree! My horoscope:

Hold on to your hat! You are in store for an extraordinary month, dear
Scorpio! When it comes to career, you are hot. By month's end, the buzz about you should spread like wildfire. Before that can happen you have some preparations to do. Start by making inquiries about the possible opportunities that may exist at your current job. Also investigate any new positions that might be available in other firms. If you are an actor or artist, whip your reel or portfolio into shape and get it out there — chances are, someone in power will view it. While you are at it, you may need some references ready. Be ready!

If you have worked hard but have not seen rewards, this month will
correct that situation by bringing on a breathtaking victory. Everything about your chart is suggesting that the end of July and early August could bring a professional turnaround so significant, it will reverse any professional or financial difficulties you have experienced in the past two years.

Your most glorious time of the month will arrive at the new moon, July 29. In the days that follow that date, suddenly, professional talks will click into place. It will be very obvious to you and to others that you have the experience, credentials and motivation to handle considerably more responsibility. You will have ten days following July 29 to seal a deal for a new job, promotion or to land a new client. (Your most rewarding days will cluster very closely to July 29.)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 14 July 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Amateurist: No less than two weeks, but if possible, I would give a month to be considerate and allow her time to find a new person. Work will get more excruciately boring once you announce your resignation, paradoxically.

(Yan3y is a Scorpio--this explains a lot.)

Mary (Mary), Monday, 14 July 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

cool, everything's going to work out, now you can just watch TV all day

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 14 July 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

And he gave me all sorts of advice about whether or not to get COBRA (he says statistically at my age there isn't a real reason to have insurance

Ur, well, you should always have at least some minimal insurance in cases of accidents and stuff... even if it's a four digit deductible, cuz even a broken bone can sometimes get near five digits to fix these days. But I tend to be very paranoid about stuff like that.

Eye doctors are the last wing of medical professions to be "ruined" by insurance companies, also, so I'm guessing his advice might have been specific to his profession. Did he really tell you didn't need any medical insurance at all, whatsoever? That's incredibly strange.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 14 July 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't even use my insurance at all and I'm the sickliest person like in the whole NYC crew.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 14 July 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

No, he said that I do need it. But he said that it all depends on my finances. Right now, with freelancing and unemployment money, I will have enough to pay my rent each month with only $300 left over. COBRA would be $250 a month. I simply can't swing it. My mom of all people actually told me that I might not want to get insurance, simply for the cash. She said that she has money set aside for a catastrophe, and that she would help me if it came to that. (oh, and $250 is the absolute cheapest plan available)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 14 July 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Mary: explain me

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 14 July 2003 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I will have to review this thread for any helpful tidbits but I must report that as of last Friday I too am out of work. I worked for a major law firm designing their ads and collateral material for almost three and a half years. There is very little work in the Bay Area for designers at the moment. Yes I am very concerned, and like Yancey I have very little savings because of trying to agressively pay off debts. My attitude now is pretty upbeat, but then again today is my first official day out of work after the weekend.

On a related topic, if and when I am lucky enough to land another full-tiime design gig, I'll surely be making quite a bit less money; when I got my previous job, designers were somewhat overvalued.

I haven't been on ILX all that much lately because I've been so busy, but I guess that's going to change... hopefully not for too long.

Sean (Sean), Monday, 14 July 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck, the hits just keep coming...I'm so sorry Sean. Are you going to try to stay in SF?

teeny (teeny), Monday, 14 July 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Condolences, Sean. Did you get severance?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 14 July 2003 17:52 (twenty-two years ago)

do you never go to the doctor when you're ill or do you pay the full amount? don't you ever get into horrible drunken accidents and require emergency room treatment?

Mary (Mary), Monday, 14 July 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

In the three years that I've been insured through CC, I've gone to the doctor three times -- all of them to get new contacts.

Why is secretive on the dark side????

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 14 July 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't imagine leaving SF because it would cost a ton of money, and my friends are here... but we'll see. My initial answer is I'm not moving.

Severence, yeah, but I'll have to review my final pay stubs. I think that after my final paycheck and vacation pay, the tax was so high I ended up with not that much at all. But better than nothing I guess.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 14 July 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha actually I'm reading all these full on descriptions now and they're all completely unreasonable. I'm meant to hate robots!

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 14 July 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Yanc3y, if you have some plan going on, whether it's insurance or mom, then that's better than nothing.. and yeah.. fuck COBRA. It's only good for the first month after being laid off, so you can find your own cheaper individual plan.

So, you mean in NYC, you can't find some basic individual insurance for $100 or so a month? Cuz in Washington state, there's Group Health Cooperative and others... I imagine NYC has something similar too, right?

Sean, :( best of luck to you. (and register for unemployment, ASAP...!)

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 14 July 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm pretty sure you can get health insurance for a lot less than what COBRA is offering--do you want me to look into it, Yance?

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 14 July 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

(that $100 figure should include dental insurance, btw)

Hmm... I'll look into this more. Thanks, Brian. And anything you could find out would be great, Ally. I'm gonna start looking into it too.

I just called the Unemployment office, and the voicemail thing said the maximum number of callers has been reached!! Call back later.

Sean (Sean), Monday, 14 July 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Well... as long as you one minimal thing for catastrophes, that's good enough. And it sounds you like do (your mom rocks), so I'd, uh, worry more about looking for a job, then health insurance right now..

Sean.. look for the California unemployment website and see when is the best time to call. Usually early in the morning is the best. If it's like here in Washington, applying for unemployment on Monday morning is the same as applying Friday afternoon for that same week.. All applications are processed all in one week, and start simultaneously the next. But again, California may be different.. Look for that web site!

I looked on my own once--there was nothing cheaper than $320 a month I think. I'm surprised your insurance covers eyes -- that's a bonus.

I think these traits are totally made up because they don't describe any of us particularly.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 14 July 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I got off the phone with unemployment and I'm eligable for full benefits, so at least I'll be able to cover my rent for a while if nothing else comes in.

Sean (Sean), Monday, 14 July 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Congrats@@@!11

People around me are getting laid off left and right. Apprently while I was gone there was a huge round of layoffs, and it's not over yet. Some of the victims have worked here for 30 years, guys who are like 3 years short of retirement. Everybody's talking in whispers and if anyone shuts their door everyone else wonders why. Why they can't get it all over with in one or two days is beyond me. LAMEVILLE.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 14 July 2003 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Sean, Yanc3y: I've been unemployed more often than not, so believe me: a positive attitude helps in the job search...and when you are eating that can of beans;> Seriously, try to stay positive. (And it helps that if/when you can't, your friends are willing to give a loving kick in the butt.)

Millar (Millar), Monday, 14 July 2003 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

what website are u all getting this from? it is not only over the top but mucho simplified; and ally none of the traditional sun sign taurean traits describe u since u have a lot of gemini in your chart, particularly your moon

anyway, i think it's really cool that teeny could possibly help yanc3y get a job. i wish someone else would form an angeleno-based-job-help-getting-networky-thread, since i'm filled with too much self-loathing right now to do so!

actually all of you suck, whining about unemployment. at least u HAD real jobs at one time -> only lowly interning here, and when its over, there's no internship-office for me, since i'm only getting "experience" :)

It's just the first thing that comes up when you type a random star sign into Google--I'm shocked that it's not exact.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 01:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I find it's the second link in Google that is more accurate for what you need.

Tom, that description sounds like you are the Dread Pirate Roberts or something.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 05:53 (twenty-two years ago)

four years pass...

I just found out I'm getting laid off December 31st - the other writer was somehow able to dig up the information way before we were supposed to know.

So what now? I feel absolutely 0 motivation to show up at work for another month and a half, we won't be getting any severance (despite having worked there for more than 2 years), and my commute is becoming almost 2 hours long. What's annoying is that I have to sign a new lease for an apartment in December, despite knowing I'm not going to be working for a while.

But it seems like a lot of people I know in the creative field in NYC are getting laid off soon. Strong fundamentals of the US economy?
