I thought he was going to become a star after Naked, but he really didn't. Also, apparently he's directed a couple of movies.

Yeah, it's hard to call him classic yet. Do more movies Mr. Thewlis!

Godawful

Seeing him on mannerism autopilot in Island of Dr Moreau put me off for good.

blame brando!

Why? Did he say "son, I catch you acting better than me, I sit on you" to Thewlis or something?

Here's a funny story about that movie. I heard the original director was kicked off for some reason, and instead of going home, dude hung around the island & snuck back on to the set as one of the animal-people extras.

Other than Naked, my fave Thewlis role is his short bit as Knox Harrington ("the video artist") in The Big Lebowski -- I didn't even know it was him until I took time to watch the credits.

(ha xpost)

"what the fuck is with this guy, who is he?"

(also I could have sworn he played the euphemizing detective in The End of the Affair but I guess I'm wrong. Whoever that guy is he was good.)

Mike Leigh needs to give him another vehicle methinks. Also classic in *Life is Sweet.*

B-but he's engaged to Anna Friel (Darren Day's cast-offs. Ew!)

two years pass...
His career looks like a crushing disappointment, although I've seen so little (like maybe nothin but the Malick cameo) since his Bertlucci movie (no Harry Potters for me).

Watched the Criterion Naked DVD last night and forgot how scaldingly funny and sad he is in it. On disc 2 is Leigh's short The Short & Curlies, where he plays a compulsive jokester (much cornier than Johnny) which is otherwise 180 degrees from Naked.

five years pass...

I just watched American Perfekt (in homage to my intense adolescent Fairuza Balk fandom); that's a p decent little flick. Thewlis is under-used in that film, although he does slap Amanda Plummer. The movie is kind of a mess, and the last 10 mins or so are a bit rmde, but there are also a few tantalizing moments when it almost seems like a precursor to Mulholland Drive. Glad I picked this up for 3 bucks plus shipping.

Naked is on Netflix Instant; I totally plan on seeing that next. It might be one of the next Criterions I buy.

five months pass...

Some of his ranty Naked jokes are so brilliant, like in the wild-paster scene where he talks about the perfect metaphor of banging your head against the wall: "The Jews've almost got it right! Just another 6 inches."

Love that movie so much. I need to rewatch again.

this is that Leigh short w/ DT in a highly diff mode, well worth 17 minutes of your time.

Also, Alison Steadman is one of the great comic actors in the history of humanity.
