gonna find myself a city to live in

having recently arrived at the sobering realization I've wasted my life, I have quit my job and plan to drive around these great united states trying out various cities for living, loving and listening.

so what are the concert capitals of the US? what cannot be missed? I'm mainly looking for help with little artistic cities or strategically located midpoints; the big cities are more obvious, though I want to visit them as well. where are all the cool people living?

Tomorrow we're in New York. Also, whoever you are I kiss you for the thread title.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 3 July 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

shelbyville?

doom-e, Thursday, 3 July 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

New Orleans. Really. Go there now.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 3 July 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

doom-e's got a one-track mind today.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 3 July 2003 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr. Astral, what kind of job did you have?

Cuz, it would be easier to find this 'cool' city for you if we could narrow them down to those that might also provide you with plenty of jobs that you could enjoy and get you paid well enough.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 3 July 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

New Orleans. Really. Go there now.

Aimee hates fun. Go to New Orleans later. Now would be like visiting scenic Alaska in January, only the opposite and with swamps and hurricanes.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 3 July 2003 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

donut, I'm ostensibly a computer programmer, but I'm not too concerned with that. right now my environment is more important than my job, so I'm willing to sacrifice in that area. :)

thanks for your help, guys!

Andrew, I got it figured out...I got it figured out!

Astral Physics, Thursday, 3 July 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a swinging town I know called...
Capital City
People stop and scream hello in...
Capital City!
It's the kind of place that makes a bum feel like a king
And it makes a king feel like some nutty, coo-coo, super king
It's against the law to frown in...
Capital City!
You'll giggle like a stupid clown
When you chance to see 4th street and D!
Once you get a whiff of it, you'll never want to roam,
From Capital City, my home sweet-swingin'-home!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 3 July 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh bite me.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 3 July 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Capital City's not THAT bad, luna!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 3 July 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

No, silly rabbit, I meant Tep. Tep, bite my ass.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 3 July 2003 18:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Astral, I had the same attitude about a year ago... but you know what they say about "as a dog returneth to its own vomit", etc. etc.

Well, you should certainly visit Seattle or Portland, then. Both cities are great hubs for art and shows, have populations that are relatively larger in the "laid back" department. And if for whatever reason, you have to fall back on trying to work as a programmer again, both cities have opportunities there... (Portland is cheaper, but has less programming jobs, etc. *insert DONUT BITCH VS. CHRIS PIUMA SEATTLE/PORTLAND FITE FITE FITE THREAD*)

(Maybe I should ask if you're trying to escape Seattle or Portland, before I plug them?)

Memphis was not only the home of Elvis and the ancient Greeks but also of Stax and Hi and Sun Records!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 3 July 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Winnipeg is nice this time of year.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 3 July 2003 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Avoid Los Angeles at all costs. If you have to be here, though, it's sorta nice right now. Do not come in September - it is, without question, the worst month of the year.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 3 July 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

chicago's great! great public transport; nice music scene; beautiful lakefront, skyline, and parks; and it's not as expensive as new york, nor as fake as l.a.
i'm a fan of chicago!
barring that, i like d.c.
or detroit.

praying mantis (praying mantis), Thursday, 3 July 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Horace is right. Winnipeg is nice this time of year. Not yet grossly hot. And very few mosquitoes to disturb me as I drink Fort Garry Dark Ale on a patio. . .

I think I might have to leave work early today and get some beer!

Jodi (Celerina), Thursday, 3 July 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh. Except we just had our 12th murder of the year.

Jodi (Celerina), Thursday, 3 July 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

owch.
Regina just saw it's auto theft rate go down by 34%. Which still leaves us as the auto theft capital of Canada, but, uh...

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 3 July 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Without going to all the reasons I'm leaving, Austin is very nice. Just wear something that breathes -- it's 95 degrees every day for 5 months.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 3 July 2003 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

horace – i know you want company bad, buti think they were looking for yankee cities.

Actually, Appalachia is a nice place to live if you're not worried about job prospects, the cost of living is cheap.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Friday, 4 July 2003 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Chicago's great

L.A.'s underrated but it takes 5-10 years to get a feel for it

I hear Cheyenne, Wyoming is cool but cannot verify this

Chapel Hill is rad

and Tallahassee Florida, along with bunches of other parts of Northern Florida & Southern Georgia, is utterly gorgeous

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 4 July 2003 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Come to Toronto, I hear all new residents who can play bass get a free membersip to broken Social Scene.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 4 July 2003 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there anything more to Chapel Hill than the college area? I visited there once, and found absolutely nothing to do. Maybe I should have checked out Durham or Raleigh instead?

donut bitch (donut), Friday, 4 July 2003 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought raleigh durham was just a delta hub.

Ed (dali), Friday, 4 July 2003 06:43 (twenty-two years ago)

All my friends who move to Seattle end up back in Portland. So PDX wins. Someday I'll move there. But not until the American regime change happens.

kate (kate), Friday, 4 July 2003 08:11 (twenty-two years ago)

PDX is groovy. Perfect mix of yuppie efficiency and beatnik scuzz. Good place to take a rest cure from a larger, scuzzier city.
