I hear GAS PANIC in Tokyo rocks but the name sort of scares me. Anyone been there and how good is it?

Gas Panic is wher the local of Japanese girls and boys are looking from the foreigners to be in the dating mood. You must haves at all of the times in these clubs a drink of very expensive nature (\1200+ )in your hand and is necessarily to be drinked fastly and refilled immediately or the club worker gentlemen will must ask you to be left the establishment.
There are many good looking peoples of other nations to be dancing there but the foreign boys who go there are looking at the Japanese girls mostly. However, many of the Brazils girls are also to be dancing at the Gas Panic.
I hope this can be good informations to you but it is better to meet the girls maybe at the Kabuki.

It really is gruesome, unless you're in a kind of alcoholic haze where you aren't bothered by all the assholes around you and feel like homing in on someone cute.

It's full of off-duty beefy jerks from the air bases at Yokosuka and around who ram their patriotic manlihood all over the atmosphere, trample all over the host nation's culture and make it a kind of US Navy Raj.

The Brits are almost as bad but tend to be quieter and more predatory.

I mush preferred the bars and clubs of Shibuya and Shinjuku, and the studenty areas of Kichijoji and Shimokitazawa. I dunno, but for me I found that the surest place to find a place full of jerks in Tokyo is an expat bar rather than a mainly native one.

Best bar/club: "The Room" in Shibuya. music is acid jazz, modern soul/funk/brazilian. (no rap or r'n'b)

for cool indie stuff - Club Q in Shimokita

for a good bangin' trance night - Club Asia in Aoyama

I went out dancing (here in Philadelphia) with someone who had lived in Tokyo for a while. As we go onto the rather large elevator, she said, "Some clubs in Tokyo are no bigger than this elevator."

Most of those little clubs are "snack clubs" for "members only" which means you have connections.

The snack clubs can be little 2-6 persons bars and lounge chairs where Japanese businessmen can have meaningful conversations with very pretty women, both local and domestic before carrying the meeting to a LOVE HOTEL.

That is certainly quite a bold statement from a nowhere man.

I agree with you 100 per cent. I never understood why this happens. I saw the same thing in Europe. It seems like they are begging for a terrorist strike in the bars to break up the festivities.

My date actually had some modest success in Japan as a singer and DJ (her initials are C.J.), so she could very well have been in exclusive clubs, though I don't think she'd be interested in the kind of clubs you are describing.

(Or maybe she was just holding out on me about revealing where part of her income came from.)

Well, not every woman who works in the snack clubs is one of the "pink ladies." The manager is sometimes a mama-san. The waitresses are almost always women. If there is any entertainment like a DJ or lounge act, I am sure it could be a woman. The snacks, however, are always beautiful women.

I thought this thread was going to be about unfortunate digestive ailments during social situations.

Rumor has it that the original club where GAS PANIC now resides did not have a WC which led many to have GAS PANIC.

While you're talking about coolio clubs, can you let me (and anyone else) know if any good record shops in Tokyo? My mum's already assured us that my boyfriend and I will explode after all the restaurants she has recommended... Now I only need to know of record shops. Please.

nathalie (nathalie), Sunday, 6 July 2003 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Natalie - the best second-hand record shop in the known universe is Disk Union. Full of all your fave stuff for teeny-weeny prices, perfectly shrink-wrapped as new - and the best place to get decently-priced J-pop. The main branch is in Ochanomizu, a campus area just one stop from Tokyo on the main Chuo line, but there are about six specialist branches in Shinjuku.
