More about conversation please: What do people like to talk about?

Beyond opening small talk: what do most people like to talk about? What do most women like to talk about? (That's what I really mean.) These are absurd, overly general, questions, right? The small talk is supposed to turn up something to talk about, isn't it? Stay attentive, respond, build on what's been said, etc.

You see a bunch of people sitting around in a restaurant talking. What are they talking about? Last night I overheard two older women talking over dinner. They seemed to primarily be discussing other women they knew and those women's respective husbands or boyfriends. What else are people out there talking about?

(If this just seems like more of the same, then go ahead and delete.)

i don't know how to talk about anything else other than interpersonal gossip and music. my social skills have atrophied terribly in the last two years. i blame a lack of a "real job."

People like to talk about themselves. I swear to God, that's all you need to know.

Yeah, I wonder this too. What do stupid people who don't read actually talk about? But they are out there. Talking and nattering on about something or other.

dale carnegie says: people like to talk about themselves. and they respond well to hearing their own name. that way you can "make friends" and "influence people" the dale carnegie way!
