Anyone watching Showtime's new series?

Rebecca Gayheart's eyes give me the creeps.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 7 July 2003 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw the pilot the other night (I'm in the UK, so it was thanks to the modern interweb and bittorrent: http://www.bytemonsoon.com) And found myself quite enjoying it, I hope it continues on the deadpan route, and steers away from some of the sentimentality which seemed too much like "Hey, love me".

Revive!

Currently my (& the missus's) favourite show, we're about 6 or 7 episodes into the first series here in the UK. We can't be the only ones to like it, right? Right? Mandy Potinkin has got to be worth bigging up, even if you don't like the rest of 'em.

(also - what other shows/films has the traffic warden lady been in? Every time S and I watch it, we spnd half the time trying to figure this out)

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 4 December 2003 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Well that worked well. One more try, then I'll leave it. Surely *someone* else watches it and has an opinion? I'll even try and answer carefully and interestingly.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 5 December 2003 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

It's really good, isn't it. I love it.

The traffic warden lady (Jasmine Guy) was in 'A Different World'.

Alfie (Alfie), Friday, 5 December 2003 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

when is it on and what channel? if i get broadband set up this weekend i'll try and grab an episode the chewshabadoo route

stevem (blueski), Friday, 5 December 2003 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

It's on Friday nights at 9pm on Sky One.

Alfie (Alfie), Friday, 5 December 2003 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I must try and figure out which episodes I've missed so I can also put my spanking new (and as yet not working) broadband to good use.

I still haven't quite figured out the English guy yet. He's too nasty to be a good guy, too indecisive to be a bad guy - I wonder if he was just included for colour and won't make series two?

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 5 December 2003 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

The MGM site for Dead Like Me has an episode guide.

I know what you mean about the English guy, he is a bit token-English-guy-y. English people cast in American series always seem to be a bit drippy and uptight - I can't think of an example other than Helen Blaxendale in Friends though.

Alfie (Alfie), Friday, 5 December 2003 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Finally some love for this show. I knew Jasmine Guy was in that Cosby spin-off, but had clean forgot the name. Alfie I think you're right about the English-cast-in-American-series thing...I thought for half a minute about Giles in Buffy, but then remembered that he was heavily characterized by an uptight rep at the start of the series. It's like the writers don't know another way to ease the US audience's guaranteed bewilderment upon hearing the accent--they've got to write in some Uptight Quirkiness or something along with it until the character has a chance to develop further. I bet the English guy stays--they need a dude to be one of the lower-rank reapers besides the chicks, and so far his Quirkiness seems different than most--he's a slacker and more manipulative about the reaping than the others seem to be.

sgs, Friday, 5 December 2003 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I guess he will stay, but I bet they do some serious work on his character and storylines in the interim. Sarah, first thing I'm going to do when I get broadband working is download the episodes you've missed :)

I want to see more of George's parents' relationship. It might be the most interesting aspect of the show.

(also, Jasmine Guy - having looked at her CV on the website, I think I must know her from The Fresh Prince).

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha, she was on the Fresh Prince as well?! I am sad we will miss this show tonight Mark. This Certain Band we're going to see had better be good.

I now look forward to your working Broadband with newfound vim.

sgs, Friday, 5 December 2003 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I'm sad about it too. But modern technology will solve everything! Hurrah! (I bought New Scientist this morning - I'm thinking again about getting a subscription. Ooh, maybe I can ask for that for Xmas).

There appear to be three more shows in the series, Sarah, including tonight's. Are we busy next Friday? Hope not :)

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

What's the chewshabadoo route?

Alfie (Alfie), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

See the 2nd post in the thread - Chewshabadoo suggested downloading via a braodband interweb connection.

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

And fuck, I now have broadband and a) can't get bittorrent to work and b) can't find downloadable versions of the series anywhere else. Any advice?

This has just got going on satellite over here. Rebecca's gone and Laura Harris (yay) has just joined and she is excellent at making me hate her. I'm also crushing on George. Anyone else besides the abovementioned like this show?

R.E.A.P.E.R. (Barima), Thursday, 12 August 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

The second season is much better than the first, much deeper and much funnier.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 23 August 2004 05:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh, is it? Excellent! I wonder if UK TV will even bother showing it.

(who's laura harris?)

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 23 August 2004 10:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Unexpected psycho-terrorist girl from 24. I started watching the second season and this show is wonderful.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Monday, 23 August 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Either C4 or 5 would be well served picking this up for the UK terrestrial massive. It's gonna fill the void in my heart for Angel (when I'm done watching the whole thing) fairly nicely.

R.I.M.A., Monday, 23 August 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Yay! I don't imagine any UK network has picked it up yet (series 1 was on Sky One), as it didn't seem very popular/didn't get very much press. But Sarah and I were hooked, and managted to stay in on Friday nights for 10 out of the 13 episodes, which is dedication for you.

I can't believe this got cancelled!

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Sunday, 8 October 2006 23:14 (nineteen years ago)

This went from mediocre in the beginning to a great stretch (when Daisy Adair was in the spotlight) just before it got cancelled.

milo z (mlp), Sunday, 8 October 2006 23:35 (nineteen years ago)

We're watching the DVDs now—two discs left before the end. Ditto about not believing that they cancelled it. So fucking great! I love the scenes with Reggie and the mom too. The mom is such a perfect embarrassing mom! That creaky voice!
And I LOVE how Mason got all excited/nervous about doing a reap on a plane, because "I've never flown. I've never been anywhere." Hah hah, HOW DID YOU GET HERE, THEN?
Everyone is fabulous.
Can't we petition to have the show revived, just as this thread was revived? Why doesn't MoveOn.org focus on something that MEANS something!!!!!!

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Monday, 9 October 2006 12:27 (nineteen years ago)

imdb claims ellen muth hasn't done anything since. too bad, i liked her.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Monday, 9 October 2006 14:52 (nineteen years ago)

Laura Harris is good in Severance. She is a bit like a less annoying Sandra Dickenson, which does not sound liek a compliment AT ALL, but trust me, is one.

Seen and enjoyed all of series one, though I was a bit worried that it was spinning its wheels a bit. Series two go anywhere?

Pete (Pete), Monday, 9 October 2006 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

I thought season 2 was even better. They entered a nice groove for a while - the character interactions and dialogue were wonderful, and the show seemed to have a direction (I mean, before it ended). Also, Rebecca Gayheart was alright and all, but I think Laura Harris really filled a void in the group. I wasn't surprised it was cancelled but I was disappointed.

I WANT TO EAT AT DER WAFFLE HOUSE!

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 21:23 (nineteen years ago)

two years pass...

Just watched both seasons back-to-back on dvd, and my, what a charming funny deep little show this was! I'm so sad it didn't carry on after season two. The characters are just lovely, each and everyone at them. Especially in the second season this show made me both laugh out loud and feel connected to the characters. It kinda captured my heart one episode at a time, and just when I fully engaged they pulled the plug...

There's a movie out, though it's without Rube and Daisy Adair. That will take some time to adjust, though I'm sure I'll want to see it at some point.

Anyone seen it yet? Is it any good, like, series good?

Le Bateau Ivre, Thursday, 29 January 2009 23:27 (sixteen years ago)

i love this show! I'm with you about the characters, they're such wonderfully hilarious, sad people.

I haven't seen the movie but there's a trailer - Reggie grew up to be pretty hot and Desmond from Lost plays the new Rube.

Disco/Very (Roz), Friday, 30 January 2009 02:41 (sixteen years ago)

Saw the movie tonight... It fucking blows, it's ridiculously bad ;_;

Rube not in this one is being accounted for - he's been written out of the series but is mentioned a lot still, which makes sense. 'Desmond' as Cameron is alright I guess, though he plays a minor role. But people, please, recasting someone else as Daisy Adair? BIG MISTAKE. The one playing Daisy - incorporating Daisy Adair's history and all - CAN NOT act. She's horrible, even though her screen time is limited, thank god. Truly horrible.

The film focuses on Georgia's relationship with Reggie, which is the 'best' story line of the movie. They "re-connect" so to speak, and get to meet, which is interesting but eventually dissapoints as well. I kinda feel for the characters still involved in this, because the movie is piss poor. It doesn't hold a candle to one single episode of the series. Mason and Roxy never ever live up to their series personae. Georgia does, she manages to keep it interesting most of the time, but the movie still is so incredibly bad and sappy and poor.

What a way to kill off such a great series. Such a shame.

Le Bateau Ivre, Sunday, 1 February 2009 01:00 (sixteen years ago)

Now I'm glad I never saw the movie (didn't even know it was actually released).

Okay, so I'm downloading the movie anyway. Hopefully being prepared to be disappointed will make it not seem so bad.

Also, why has no one given Ellen Muth another steady job?!
