Self help books C/D?

I am currently reading 'Feel the fear & do it anyway' which was recommended to me by my counsellor. I am definitely identifying with what it says in the book, but I am not far enough into it for it to be of any help yet. Are these type of books helpful, or are they just a load of old rubbish? Experiences & opinions pls.

Read Happiness by Will Ferguson.

Pinkpanther, I reckon some are and some aren't. The self help genre is maybe the oldest genre that there is. I am totally serious when I say that a zen text written in, the 9th century (I think) actually got me through a very difficult 20 minutes one evening back in 1997, and I have that author to thank for my sanity.

I do avoid any self help book that mentikons the word 'soul', and any that has pink or blue on the cover, or shows a picture of the author looking heavily made up and neurotic on the cover. That is definitely a warning sign. Also, I avoid any books that ask me to write a list, or that describe human psychology in levels or stages. Bye bye, Ken Wilber.

To each their own, but I really found Michael Washburn's "The Ego and the Dynamic Ground" to be a marvellously helpful book. Oh, and also Ecclesiastes in the Bible, the only atheistic text in that curious book. But whatever works, hey? One of my best friends reads what are, to me, the most absurdly outlandish books, but they seem to really help her.

Happiness is a myth. Dreamed up by advertising men to sell you mortgages, sports cars and deodorant.

I read WHERE'S MY CHEESE GONE and thought it was really stupid... I recently read THEY F*** YOU UP which was great, but I feel even worse than I did before. I didn't do the little exercises though. I also read THE NOONDAY DEMON but found it depressing because it was depressing and also seemed aimed at wealthy Americans. I think self-helpfullest books are those which allow you a bit of escapism, like NODDY COCKS BIG EARS.
