Videotaping your operation

My girlfriend had an endometriosis operation a couple of days ago and made the surgeon videotape it. We're watching it for the third time tonight. It's crystal clear, in living colour, and, I have to say, she's as beautiful on the inside as on the outside. I highly recommend videotaping your own operation. All you have to do is provide a blank videotape.

Um, unusual idea. I mean I could understand filming a birth, but just an operation?! I don't think it's what I'd do, but hey, whatever suits!!

She likes blood, she likes carnage. She should've been a surgeon. Or a butcher. Or maybe a murderer. Same thing, really.

What does endometriosis mean? Forgive my ignorance.

I had a colonoscopy (yes, up there), and was able to watch the whole thing on a screen while it was happening. I was heavily, heavily medicated at the time, and the screen was close up, denying any peripheral vision. It really felt as if I was travelling through my own colon at unimagineable speed, and the drugs made for a rainbow of colours, flashes of light, and traces. For this non-believer, it was as close to a religious experience as it gets. Bringing it home on videotape would surely destroy that unique magic.

I watched someone's LASIK surgery video. It made me cringe and sorta gag. And there wasn't even any blood. But watching someone's eyes being lasered is mega gross.

I have passed out just from seeing my blood being taken when I have had to give a sample, so I think I would have to pass up a chance at doing something like this.

I know of a couple of women who have had their "female" operations video-taped - not for their watching pleasure, but because there was a problem with the local teaching hospital having interns perform gyn exams while the patient was under the ether, even if the patient requested that it not occur.

I don't think I'd be interested in seeing my own surgery - not that the blood disturbs me, but I have an odd feeling that I'd be self-conscious. Silly thing to worry about, I know, but true nonetheless.

WHAT IS ENDOMETRIOSIS?

Endometriosis is a condition where endometrium (the lining of the uterus) is found in locations outside the uterus.

This misplaced tissue may be found on the ovaries, uterus, bowel, bladder utero-sacral ligaments (ligaments that hold the uterus in place), or peritoneum (covering lining of the pelvis and abdominal cavity). On rare occasions it can be found in other distant sites.

I was misdiagnosed with this before I was diagnosed as having PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome), because during "that time of the month" I felt so much pain that I was bedridden. This pain, if I understand correctly what my gyn said, is not uncommon amongst suffers of endometriosis.

Oh, it's lovely being a femme.

Oh yeah, the original question.

I'm not bothered by blood & guts, but I don't think I'd want my operation or the operation of someone I loved filmed, nor would I want to really watch it. Unless I wanted to see how big a tumor, a tumor-like growth, or a cyst was, which I've never been curious about in the past. So I don't think I'll be curious about it anytime soon.

I watched a relative's cornea transplant on PBS once. When the stitches were being pulled out I had to look away. Just the thought of this is making me weak in the knees and other delicate places.

Argh! My 9th grade social studies teacher showed us his knee surgery! He considered it a "treat" and, AFAIK, is still doing it based on the stories from my sisters, who all had the same teacher!

IT WAS NOT A TREAT

The removal of my appendix sits safely on the family video tape BETWEEN BIRTHDAYS AND CHRISTMAS wtf. I have never watched it, it was taped because my uncle did the surgery, I think he uses it for teaching or something, and my dad thought it'd be a good idea to preserve this festive moment for future generations.

I saw a guy having a brain operation. He was only locally sedated (?). So he was WIDE AWAKE while they were playing with his brain. This was because they had to check they did the right things: he had to do tests while they were cutting his brain. "Can you say what this is?" while they showed him a picture of a chair. He also had to count backwards. CREEPY! Brrr. So no, I'm not a fan of videotaping an operation. Not even if I (ever - sigh) give birth, so Thom has told me. :-)
