Gareth in NYC, Part III: On the Waterfront FAP

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been banging on about red hook for years. Despite the lack of decent subway, it's where I'd want to live in NYC, on the waterfront.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 06:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Unfortunately, the Red Hook Trolley plan seems to have stalled.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 06:13 (twenty-two years ago)

my brother lived in red hook 1996-1999. he wouldnt let me see what
it was like when i went to visit him, i had to meet him in manhattan
instead. is it really tough and scary then?
he did say though that the mustard yellow pimp lived
next door ie everything was the same colour, clothes, car etc.
if your going to choose a colour, well its not top of my list..

joni, Tuesday, 8 July 2003 07:32 (twenty-two years ago)

he did say though that the mustard yellow pimp lived

i must go to red hook, just to see this!

also, i love that phrase -- "the mustard yellow pimp."

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 07:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I wouldn't be able to live in Red Hook without going AARRRRR!!! all the fucking time.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 07:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Why?

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 08:26 (twenty-two years ago)

N., invites attacks by muggers. They swarm around him, clubbing him.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 08:27 (twenty-two years ago)

AAARRRRRR!!!

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 08:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe Nick would be safe inside the Brooklyn Public Library, Red Hook branch.

http://www.brooklynpubliclibrary.org/branches/branches/redhook.htm

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 09:01 (twenty-two years ago)

All I know of Red Hook I learnt from Tazz and the WWF. I suspect this may not be a 100% accurate and complete image.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw a giant wall mural there saying 'Shooting People Isn't Cool' on top, underneath it said 'the right way to settle a beef' (picture of fistfight), 'the wrong way' (somebody getting capped). As a weedy bookworm and inept streetfighter I'd like to differ. "Sam Colt made us equal"!

dave q, Tuesday, 8 July 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
according to TONY, Lillie's has free BBQ on Sunday evenings

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 2 August 2003 02:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I would go back to Red Hook for free ribs.

rosemary (rosemary), Saturday, 2 August 2003 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I was actually there 2 Sundays ago but they were taking a while to fire up the grill so I headed back to Liberty Heights for pizza.

Mary (Mary), Saturday, 2 August 2003 05:42 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
a new restaurant

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 25 September 2003 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

two months pass...
I live in the Harbor Tech building on Verona st, 2 blocks from the water. The roof is one of the best in the city, beleive me. Clear views in every direction.

Berkeley Sackett (calstars), Friday, 5 December 2003 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

What a wonderfully named place.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 5 December 2003 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's a quote from the NY Times:

'Unburdened by high rents, untraveled by Manhattanites and unconcerned with stylistic trends, airy Red Hook exists in a realm of its own, sort of a New York Australia where the strangest animals can evolve in isolation.'

WTF

Berkeley Sackett (calstars), Friday, 5 December 2003 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

to be fair, berkeley, the expressway hovering just overhead is sort "airy," like a hanging garden of babylon. made of cracked concrete.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 5 December 2003 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

(i thought this thread was going to be about British Knights!!)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 5 December 2003 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

stevem was the first kid at his school to have British Knights trainers.

And can't you just tell?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 5 December 2003 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a pretty clear sign that the fecundity of a neighborhood is pretty much burnt up when the "loft" spaces are not made available for people who work in their live/work spaces, but instead offer square feet and high ceilings to dull hangers-on who complain about smells and noise. The loft buildings in Red Hook that Rachel and I looked at for a place to live and a studio for her equipment were strictly for cultural tourists. So we moved to downtown Brooklyn instead. Too bad, I would have liked having Lillie's as my local.

Benjamin (benjamin), Friday, 5 December 2003 02:03 (twenty-one years ago)

five months pass...
an article in my mailbox about the Red Hook Community Justice Center. I think a girl I shared a seminar with in school (who I ran into at Boat) worked there.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I still haven't been there, and that needs to corrected immediately.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Red Hook, its cobbled streets and its waterfront and its cool bar that I went to while visiting Brooklyn last month. But I also heard you shouldn't eat any vegetables that you might grow from the soil. Is that a myth?

sgs (sgs), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

that's probably true of a lot of places in Brooklyn. Don't eat any fish you've caught outta the rivers, either (you wont catch any in the Gowanus so don't bother fishing there).

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought this was going to be a thread about burger king selling beer!

kephm, Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Gowanus fish doesn't sound so good anyway.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Tim next time you come to NYC let's go to the Gowanus Yacht Club!

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you really pronouncing that the way I think you are?

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Go-WAN-us?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Lawn-GUY-lind

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 27 May 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I was hoping for more of a go-way-nus, or perhaps go-anus.

Either way round the yacht club sounds like dynamite.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 27 May 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Gowanus Yacht Club FUCKING OWNZZZZZ.

$1 PBRs on a SUNDAY AFTERNOON.

SO SWEET.

ddb, Thursday, 27 May 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah plus VEGGIE DOGS FOR US VEGGIE TYPES.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 27 May 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Decent IPA -- true to form, if a little clean and over-literal. OK in a pinch.

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Thursday, 27 May 2004 16:12 (twenty-one years ago)

LETS GO NOW!

ddb, Thursday, 27 May 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't, dammit.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 27 May 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

but don't forget the photo opening tonight, LAMER!

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 27 May 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

me neither.

**sigh**

ddb, Thursday, 27 May 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm there dude!

ddb, Thursday, 27 May 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Red Hook is over, I imagine

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 27 May 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Red Hook reminds me of New Orleans for some reason.

ddb, Thursday, 27 May 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Red Hook is over, I imagine

like I'd trust the words of a MANHATTANITE on the matter.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 27 May 2004 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Red Hook reminds me of New Orleans for some reason.

maybe it's the random gunfire?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 27 May 2004 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

well, I would think it's eternal, but because I'm a Manhattanite (not the least of the reasons), I'm not really an arbiter

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 27 May 2004 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe it's the random gumbo?

ddb, Thursday, 27 May 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

so are they opening the ikea there or not? also i heard about plans to build a fairway there. with ferry service from manhattan.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 27 May 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

ferry service is already happening, I think.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 27 May 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Ikea is still being debated, as far as I know. I still haven't been to Gowanus Yacht Club. But that's not really Red Hook.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 27 May 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Speaking of Ikea, has anyone been to the new Loew's?

57 7th (calstars), Thursday, 27 May 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

deanomgwtf!!!p%3Fmsgid%3D4581997 (deangulberry), Thursday, 27 May 2004 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Gowanus Yacht Club isn't really Gowanus, even.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 27 May 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

there's an ad for the Loew's right next to my office, but no, haven't been there.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 27 May 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Loew's ("Low-eaze" to folks who still say "IRT")? Or Lowe's?

I bought a really big air conditioner at the Gowanus Lowe's last week. Then I had to fit it into my VW. It looked like a punch line.

Dickerson Pike (Dickerson Pike), Thursday, 27 May 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yeah, it's Lowe's I guess.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 27 May 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

There are fish in the Gowanus. I've seen them from the Carrol St. Bridge. I wouldn't eat them though.

I walked by the Red Hook Public Library the other day, accross the street from the Projects. It was depressing.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 27 May 2004 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Gowanus Yacht Club is strictly on the border of Carroll Gardens/Cobble Hill. If you say it's in BoCoCa, you're an asshole.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 27 May 2004 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

what the fuck is BoCoCa, except for maybe an remote, exotic island in the South Pacific?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 27 May 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan OTM. Say BoCoCa and DIE.

57 7th (calstars), Thursday, 27 May 2004 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

are the veggie dogs better at the gowanus yacht club better than the veggie dogs at daddy's?

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 27 May 2004 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

If you say it's in BoCoCa, you're an asshole.

OTocoMoca!

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 27 May 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

The Downtown Brooklyn Thread

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 27 May 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

some of the new jack "shops"(and I use that term lightly) who moved to Smith St. thought it'd be a good idea to band together and give Smith St. a cute name. God forbid someone said "I'm going to Cobble Hill"(ugh, they might think you meant Court Street!) I for one saw nothing wrong with Smith St. They figure BoCoCa includes shops and restaraunts around the corner on Atlantic Ave or whatever as well. It's meant to stand for Boerum Hill/Cobble Hill/Carroll Gardens. Why nog CoCaBo? CaBoCo? You know someone spent a long time deciding that. They have a website but I'm too lazy to check. But the important question is -

Does Coco Roca deliver to BoCoCa?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 27 May 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

are the veggie dogs better at the gowanus yacht club better than the veggie dogs at daddy's?

not necessarily, but GYC is OUTSIDE! Drinking outside > drinking inside.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 27 May 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

do you listen to Coco Rosie in BoCoCa while drinking Coca-Cola with your food from Coco Roca?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 27 May 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

my previous post is a grammatical abomination. i think i was on the phone whilst typing it.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 27 May 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Cookie Puss etc.

57 7th (calstars), Thursday, 27 May 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

btw the new-ish waterfront park in DUMBO is the greatest thing ever. it's the closest thing that part of brooklyn has to a beach! you can actually walk on the rocks and have the river splashing at your feet.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 27 May 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

is that the place underneath the Brooklyn Bridge that the GOP is going to ruin in August?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 27 May 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

What are the Repubs doing down there? Cruising?

Dickerson Pike (Dickerson Pike), Thursday, 27 May 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

is that the place underneath the Brooklyn Bridge that the GOP is going to ruin in August?

i dunno, but get there soon before they get their taint all over our nice park.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 27 May 2004 19:24 (twenty-one years ago)

that's where one of the RNC kick-off rallies is supposed to take place. I'll be on the bridge with a dozen eggs within launching distance...

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 27 May 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll make sure to be well out of dodge that month.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 27 May 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm surprised they're venturing to Brooklyn. I imagine South St Seaport as more RNC-style.

57 7th (calstars), Thursday, 27 May 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

why, because it stinks?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 27 May 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

they heard all the gay people live in manhattan.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 27 May 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

well duh Dan, Toybox closed.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 27 May 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

BoCoCaFap anyone? Hot dogs on Lauren.

Mary (Mary), Thursday, 27 May 2004 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Then Lauren would have to come back to South Brooklyn, god forbid.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 27 May 2004 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to try Brooklyn more.

Carey (Carey), Thursday, 27 May 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Carey (Carey), Thursday, 27 May 2004 22:56 (twenty-one years ago)
