by the way thanks anthony. if i haven't responded sooner it's because compliments embarrass me. (= the virtual equivalent of hiding my face in my hands)

david belasco was an early 20th-c. theater impresario (the de mille family, including cecil, was associated with him) who imported some of the new ideas of scandanavian realism into the american theater, not to mention many ideas about realism in costume, set design, and so on. the modern theater owes a lot to him. he also helped to build what we now know as "broadway" by spearheading the design/building of lavish theaters to attract the upper middle class.
