Iranian twins die

Just saw on MSN and CNN that the conjoined 29-year old Iranian twins who went to Singapore to be separated both died during the surgery, about two hours apart. For some reason this makes me very sad, more than I thought it would. :(

ditto. even the newsreaders have appeared to be genuinely moved.

it's hard not to be moved by those lovable iranians. what's there not to like¿

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Aw. And I was so hoping they'd pull through, too....

It was the very first news I heard today - very sad.

It was the first news I heard today too! I'm all "Fuck you NPR I'm trying to drive to work here," and they continue to tell us all about how it happened and the surgical team and so on and so forth. One of the surgeons was from up in Baltimore. Depressing.

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The sad thing is that they must've been well aware of the risks involved, but that it meant so much to them to actually give the operation a try. I gather they lived for about twenty minutes afterwards. Very sad.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, no. One of the surgeons was from Baltimore? That's terrible.

jewelly (jewelly), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

they did know the risks. they said that they were tired of having to do everything in tandem and were willing to take whatever chance to live separately.

this is a very sad turn, i agree.

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

If the statistics were to be believed, there was a 25% chance they'd both die. Whatever the case, this news *is* very sad.

meta - it's odd the way this thread is a mix of people being upset at these twins dying and smartarses showing off their shadenfreude.

I remember when those two young girls were separated a while ago (the ones where they shared a heart, but one of the two had no brain), they had to leave a mirror in the bed with the survivor so that she wouldn't be confused to find herself on her own.

I feel like I am on drugs when I read this thread. I thank you all, that's $320 saved for me every week!

re above photo

i seem to recall these two are twins, aged about ten at the time of the photo and if i'm not mistaken they're the leaders of a Burmese/Myanmar insurgency group/golden triangle drug cartel!?

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

How incredibly fucked-up is that.

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

"aw, geez, kiddo, just put away the uzi for a minute and hug your daddy!"

"stand back heathen!" (cocks gun. awkward pause follows. then the boy smiles,)

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

are these those same twins joined at the head who have been here in Dallas? I"m lost. . .

That Girl (thatgirl), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

no they are the orphaned preadolescent militia leaders from southeast asia who were captured last year or the year before and returned to regular society.

amateurist (amateurist), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 04:16 (twenty-two years ago)
