I'm pushing 30yrs old and have suddenly become a pimple magnet. What the hell? I never had pimples when I was a teen and now all of the sudden. Is it my fondness for chips? Stress? I wash my face about 40 times a day. Anyone else suddenly develop adult acne? What helps?

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

it's gotta be the 'roids.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

see a dermatologist dude, like right now

any scarring at 30 is going to SUCK if you don't nip it in the bud

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Stopping washing your face so often is a good start. I started getting bad skin when I was like 20 all of a sudden and was like, well, I'll wash my face more often. Bad news; it makes your skin create more oil to compensate. Stick with twice a day. Exactly how bad is it? If it's not actually terrible, you could try buying Neutrogena Clear Pore and put that on your face every night for a couple weeks, see if it helps. If it doesn't, go to dermatologist.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

oh im not a crater face or anything, its just like the occassional pimple, well more like two a week. and they aren't whiteys or anything they are these damn oily mothers. i use Noxema for men.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, definitely try buying the Clear Pore. That stuff actually works, but you gotta use it every night for like two or three weeks to see obvious improvement. If after three weeks it's not definitely improved, go to the dermo, they'd probably prescribe you some tetracycline, which works pretty well. But DEFINITELY go for the Clear Pore first. It's like $5 or $6.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

drink more water.

wash your face in the shower and before you go to bed.

they say orgasms are good too... ?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I was told that stress causes acne, which lends credence to gygax! & his sexy solution.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, sex is good for your skin. I forget the exact science of this but I read it in Cosmopolitan so it must be totally true.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Reason #714 for chronic masturbation. (but I think Chris V. is a proud follower of that religion, by his own admission, I think?)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I gets mad laid. Ya ok. DB i am a proud follower.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think it's masturbation though, I think it's actually having sex, you need to get the whole thing in there.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

This means my wife will have to get involved in the pimple party...she'll send me to a dermatologist.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

you need to get the whole thing in there.

I can smell a new raunchy club r&b dance smash already.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

It's amazing how fast we turn a thread to absolute smut, isn't it?

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

i got into this habit of sticking my face fairly close to the kettle as it boiled so all the steam rises up and unblocks your pores. you only need to do it for a few seconds (until it hurts) but you feel fresher straight away - then wash as normal, slap on the E45 or whatever...

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

It just takes two.

Ok seriously... I know acne can be a side effect of an imbalance of hormones, but I think this may be more of an issue for women. (I'll stress I could be totally wrong, so someone call me on my B.S. if it needs to be called)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Not 'amazing' per se. Flipping your car on its back on the M1 and walking free from the carnage, that's amazing. This is just 'inevitable'.

errgh, dude, pimples falling into tea, gross.

you're not close enough for that to happen

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I think its stress thats doing it to me. I don't really eat chips and junk all that often. And its not like Im rubbing the chips on my face.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

pusbandit

Tad (llamasfur), Tuesday, 8 July 2003 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually rubbing chips into your face complements your natural oils and it great for your complexion. I read it in Chipmopolitan so it must be true.

I've said this so many times before to other people on other occasions, but it bears repeating: go and see the dermatologist, you might be in the first flush of rosacea.

And yeah, stop washing your face so often. Twice a day -- with a super-mild soap -- is more than enough.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 00:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Stress aggravates rosacea, by the way.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 00:56 (twenty-two years ago)

roaccutane is yer friend in a worst case scenario. when i was 16 i took this miracle drug and despite drying out my entire body, it cleared all the acas. anyone else been on this?

a fondness for beanies and caps combined with a sweating tendency means i still break out, sometimes.

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Roaccutane is a bit of a nightmare thing but I resorted it to it when I couldn't shift those final stubborn fuckerbastards and it did do the job. I timed it very badly though because I started the four-month course in March and finished it in July, by which time the glorious sunshine just made the godawful drying-out quality all the worse. The wonderful 'hilarious' initial side-effect was... MORE spots. But these were subsequently also blitzed by the treatment, so all to the good.

Regular exfoliation is so absolutely your friend, though. I still have the occasional unreliable couple-of-days but nothing really out of the ordinary that isn't easily sorted. There are also costly but hyper effective laser treatments available now for the wealthy end-of-tether spot victim in your life.

Alex in Rotherham (Alex in Doncaster), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 10:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Whatever you do, DON'T PICK. It is my downfall.

I have found that using baby-sensitive face wash is good, plus a dollop of baking soda gives you an exfoliant material that also has some soothing properties. Then a very very light moisturiser that fools your skin into thinking it's produced enough sebum to cope.

Also if you have a gym, get thee to the steam room for 15 minutes twice a week and drink more water, less caffeine.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 10:23 (twenty-two years ago)

stubborn fuckerbastards are the worst!

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 10:26 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, using a gentle exfoliant really seems to help. a dermatoligist suggested using a bit of the shower puffs that everyone has-- it helps get rid of dead stuff, but isn't too harsh like some of the scrub creams.

also, if you're trying to figure out what's causing them, remember that it generally isn't an immediate response. so if you're stressed, you'll break out a few weeks later. if you switch soaps, you should stick with it for about 2 months to actually see if it makes a difference.

good luck!

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I drink plenty of water, at least 2 qts a day. Like I said above its not like Im Pimply Pete, just the weekly pimple. But its quite aggravating. All this heat and sweating doesn't help either. And i failed to mention it happens a lot after shaving, its not on my neck but my cheeks. I've tried a new razor, switching shaving creams, new aftershave. Nothing. Is there any pimple free shaving cream out there?

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 10:47 (twenty-two years ago)

If You Buy The Bogstandard Gilette Cool Wave Sensitive Skin Shaving Gel Your Life Will Be Better (and, also, use it).

Hot water is better for shaving, yes? I know this was discussed on another thread but I forget.

Alex in Rotherham (Alex in Doncaster), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 11:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I've read that you should shave with hot water and then take a cold face cloth to your face afterwards to close your pores. I've never tried it though. Maybe I should.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
I just had a bad break out, an all natural Hemp Seed Oil Base Tea Tree Oil Soap did wonders in just 3 days also ProActive really works.

Natalie J, Tuesday, 5 August 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I've been rocking the Tea Tree Oil for a while and been pretty happy with the results. Pineapple is a great exfoliant too; I'm going to try mixing canned crushed pineapple with oatmeal for a scrubbing masque next.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

five months pass...
I have blemishes/discolorations on my upper lip (i.e. my moustache area) from where pimples once were/continue to be, and I've had these for months now. I use ProActive twice a day most days, and there's still that discoloration. Do I need to moisturize it or sommat?

Leee Smith (Leee), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 07:51 (twenty-one years ago)

four years pass...

It's bad enough having a few pimples, but it sucks when they're line up down the middle of your face like some sort of astrological symbol. In the exact middle of the top of my nose there's a storm brewing, and exactly below the middle of my lips. I'm almost 25 dammit, when do I move on to the next level of physical problems? bullshit.
