what the hell is going on?!

I LOVE THIS SHOW SO MUCH.

I cannot even be coherent about it. Tonight's, though -- for anyone who wonders, I have alluded to my father being a bit not right in the head from time to time? Almost every single word uttered by The Busey tonight could have come from my father. That's what he's like.

Anyway, though. Jesus fuck. I just saw this for the first time the other night, the Magic Indian episode followed by the Face Your Fear episode. The only other time in my life I've laughed that hard, I was high as a kite on acid and talking about wild pigs.

What's this then?

Comedy Central show, a reality show where the producer/intern-looking kid wanders around with Gary Busey. I'm not sure to what extent Gary Busey is faking being a complete lunatic (in one episode he makes Adam -- producer/intern-looking kid -- promise to visit his coffin after he dies and refill the ice on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, because that's how The Busey sees cryogenics.)

whoa! big pic!

i can't tell either how much Busey is playing up his weirdness. i've seen the Magic Indian and today's Technology episode. that part when Busey is totally in awe of the Vicky 'Small Wonder' robot was so rad. he almost had tears in his eyes

Welcome to Seaworld, kid

Like any time a fascinating and bizarre actor turns himself into a clown just to get some love (instead of just taking funnier roles, like, say, Christopher Walken), I find this show vaguely depressing.

its not like Gary Busey is Sir Lawrence Olivier

chaki (chaki), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

no, but he does have some acting talent, and this seems pretty demeaning. And depending on how out of it he actually is, kind of exploitative.

Oh my god he's about to eat that small child.

three weeks pass...
It's not exploitation. Busey is a living legend. He is above the mockery and foolishness. The man has been a bullrider, rock/country drummer, and survived accidents that would've killed an average man.

I saw him on Praise the Lord after he recovered from an accident. He wept when he heard Don McLean's "American Pie" for the first time on the radio on a boat of the coast of Florida. He and Roy Scheider asked for some mustard on a bagel while they were hosed.

He knows what he's doing.

True -- I don't think the show is holding Busey up as an idiot. Just as a crazy person. That he's crazy isn't news, but the depths of it are fascinating, alarming, and very entertaining.

And I definitely get the sense that Busey is NOT an idiot from the show. He's a ham, and he's playing up to the fact that the show thinks he's crazy, and he's a masterful entertainer given a job that he knows how to do so well. "Busey, go be crazy." "You betcha!"

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 3 August 2003 05:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The kid is as out of it as Busey is but in totally the opposite way. He's such a clever-clogs tightass that I feel even sorrier for him. The poetry thing, for instance. You could see that Busey really does have a an instinct for that stuff and it HURTS HIM in his HEART to see the kid squirm like that, to be so visibly straitjacketed by his own built-in disdain for acting-out (which Busey has no doubt ingrained into his very soul at that point, but still)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 3 August 2003 06:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw it for the first time last night. The Mystery episode. Holy shit. His milk song and dance....my god. I need this to be on DVD immediately.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

this sounds phenomenal

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

From the one episode I saw I say it is phenomenal

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck, I forgot it was on last night. I'm glad it's Comedy Central, they'll rerun it on ... what, Saturday, I think.
