Internationale: c or d?

Arise ye workers from your slumbers
Arise ye prisoners of want
For reason in revolt now thunders
And at last ends the age of cant.
Away with all your superstitions
Servile masses arise, arise
We'll change henceforth the old tradition
And spurn the dust to win the prize.

So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The Internationale unites the human race.
So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The Internationale unites the human race.

No more deluded by reaction
On tyrants only we'll make war
The soldiers too will take strike action
They'll break ranks and fight no more
And if those cannibals keep trying
To sacrifice us to their pride
They soon shall hear the bullets flying
We'll shoot the generals on our own side.

No saviour from on high delivers
No faith have we in prince or peer
Our own right hand the chains must shiver
Chains of hatred, greed and fear
E'er the thieves will out with their booty
And give to all a happier lot.
Each at the forge must do their duty
And we'll strike while the iron is hot.

No re-imagine it written by the Manics.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 11:24 (twenty-two years ago)

That's weird: I was just reading about this last night in World Music: A Very Short [quirky, frustratingly theoretical but often guilty of glossing over important questions, and yet thought-provoking] Introduction.

They are a crap team that never plays anything but defence.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, when was the las time you actually sang it? I still do, occasionally, at student parties and First of May rallies, but there's always an ironic element attached. Of course, I was never a commie to begin with (I'm a leftist-anarchist), so the song doesn't carry such an emotional weight for me. There is an anarchist version of the Internationale, but I've forgotten the lyrics ages ago.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 10 July 2003 07:10 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
Last week I was at an uni student party where there were a lot of toasts raised and songs sung, and me and my friend suggested Internationale, which was promptly sung, but I was shocked to find out that a lot of the younger students didn't even know it properly! What has the world come to?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Saturday, 2 April 2005 07:40 (twenty years ago)

i doubt anyone i know knows any of it

fcussen (Burger), Saturday, 2 April 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

Red Flag has better tune but The Internationale has better lyrics

Dadaismus (Dada), Saturday, 2 April 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

I've never heard of it.

Don't you have communists in Australia?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

No, they don't

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

'kay.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

erm, xpost, I was referring to the red flag tune bit. Soviet national anthem beats all, though.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

The French knew of it (the anarchist version, most likely). I was reading accounts of Paris in May 1968 and it was frequently sung during that time in marches and to drown out members of the Communist Party when they preached through bullhorns. Classic.

Oh wait, that was stupid of me. It was written about the fall of the Paris Commune in 1871...of course they'd know it!

But you were right both ways Ed

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

It was mentioned in Goodbye to Berlin (Isherwood), which I've recently finished and I meant to go and look up the words, then completely forgot. Thank you for the revive!

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

"we'll strike while the iron is hot" may have been fresh-minted and thrilling in 1871 but it's v.lame today

(also it is cannibalist!)

Legalize Cannibals NOW!

Eugène Pottier's original lyrics:

Debout les damnés de la terre
Debout les forçats de la faim
La raison tonne en son cratère
C'est l'éruption de la fin.
Du passé faisons table rase
Foule, esclaves, debout, debout
La monde va changer de base
Nous ne sommes rien, soyons tout!

{Refrain:}
C'est la lutte finale
Groupons nous, et demain
L'Internationale
Sera le genre humain.

Il n'est pas de sauveurs suprêmes
Ni Dieu, ni César, ni tribun
Producteurs, sauvons nous nous-mêmes
Décrétons le salut commun
Pour que le voleur rende gorge
Pour tirer l'esprit du cachot
Soufflons nous même notre forge
Battons le fer quand il est chaud.

{au Refrain}

{au Refrain}

Hideux dans leur apothéose,
Les rois de la mine et du rail
Ont-ils jamais fait autre chose
Que dévaliser le travail
Dans les coffres-forts de la bande
Ce qu'il a crée s'est fondu
En décrétant qu'on le lui rende
Le peuple ne veut que son dû.

{au Refrain}

{au Refrain}

Ouvriers, paysans, nous sommes
Le grand parti des travailleurs
La terre n'appartient qu'aux hommes
L'oisif ira loger ailleurs
Combien, de nos chairs se repaissent
Mais si les corbeaux, les vautours
Un de ces matins disparaissent
Le soleil brillera toujours.

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

What does that mean?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

Lets strike the iron the iron while it's hot.

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

Lets delete one iron while its hot too.

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

Talked about this in class today, actually. I was unfamiliar with it until recently. We watched a video where an old man relates his experience as part of the Abraham Lincoln brigade when each soldier got up on stage and sang the song in his own language. Interesting.

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

It's not pretty, but I have penchant for singing this

C'est la lutte finale
Groupons nous, et demain
L'Internationale
Sera le genre humain

loudly when in my cups.
