it's the battle of the stereotypes - the hardworking yet jolly Germans v. the shifty & lazy yet flamboyant & good at cooking Italians.

Which side are you on?

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Italy nudge it thanks to food and football

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Guess.

Sommermute (Wintermute), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Italy in no-contest landslide

beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer over wine.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Italy easy easy easy

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

You people can't be serious.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally I told you about the sock and sandal thing

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 16:49 (twenty-two years ago)

and germany has football too.

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I have met far too many Italian-American men in Queens to think that Italy is anything besides a hot bed of greased back hair, Camaros and gold chains while KTU "The Beat of New York" plays nonstop. YOU LOSE ITALY.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Ally you have no idea

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

ally's right. it's the same here in the t dot, i find.

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

If you go to Italy there's the subculture of football supporter Ed and I call Squires because they all wear Barbour jackets and tartan and anything that could have come from Daks or Savile row. Squires are evil and will drop the country gent thing to knife you to fuck post-match.

German music of the latter half of 20th century WAY better.

suzy (suzy), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

b-b-but white trash Italian-Americans invented disco!!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah but they had to go to America to do it!

Mind you Italo house is tasty.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

and the germans had kraftwerk.

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

See, James, the thing is, if I'm right, that could be really fucking cool...but the problem is, I saw on tv that the population of Italy is so skewed now that it's almost entirely male. This might just be US government propaganda, but if it's true, it freaks me out incredibly. Who do they sexually harrass? I'd rather go to Greece and Germany than Italy though, so I shall never find out.

Dyson makes good point.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Italy had Moroder.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

But he needed to go to Germany to do his best stuff.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

ally they got plenty o babe in italy. plus they got style for miles.

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean good fucking lord, this is like Cuba vs. Canada

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, clearly Cuba beats all of these countries.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Cuba does beat all of these countries (but Italy's in second - do you see?)

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Italy Schmitaly, what about Greece?

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

no, they dress like shit too

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

whats so great about Cooba?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

It invented Miami.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

James, I think you need to start to accept the fact that Europeans just don't dress as stylish as we all hoped. At least not the ones touristing other countries.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

but the Italians and the Spaniards and some of the French do!

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean christ, England leaves Germany in the dust! England!

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 17:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I love German music, but it ain't hard to figure out 'gee, nation of dorks'

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, so then why do all the tourists you just listed dress so sloppy when they tourist in NYC? Hmmmmmm?

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

duh, New York sux!

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck the World! That's all folx! I'm out! Enjoy the Breakfast Buffet!

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Strikes me as odd how outdated the stereotypes on this thread are. I mean, don't you know that ninety percent of all the flat-voiced henna-haired backpack tourist chicks out there are German? We breed them for the rest of the world.

Sommermute, I tried to explain that to James the other night and he had none of it.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Italy for the food, Germany for the beer. I can't decide.

Nicole (Nicole), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Although Germany for the food and Italy for the beer can work too. A good Moretti works wonders.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Suedtirol. I refuse to choose.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

'ultra-nationalist blondes who invade our beaches' is the latest verdict from Berlusconi's mob

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

So, Battle of the Former Axis Powers: Italy v. Germany v. Japan

Sommermute (Wintermute), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Sommermute tells the truth.

What about Spain? Or Ireland? People get with the program here.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 10 July 2003 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm neither italian nor german. but people think that i'm german and no-one has ever thought that i'm italian. so germany it is.

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 10 July 2003 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

germany: bauhaus, kraftwerk, can, berlin

italy: merda dell'artiste, milano, goblin, mangia! mangia! mangia!

still gonna go with germany!

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 10 July 2003 01:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I get mistaken for Romanian, what is their country like?

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 10 July 2003 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

in Italy, "We're having dinner just after midnight" is a little annoying, but actually means "we're having dinner sometime between midnight and one a.m."

in Germany, "we're having dinner at six" means "we will have dinner sometime between eight o'clock and four a.m.," which is so fucking annoying that words fail me.

Et cetera for like thirty pages. Italy all the way.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 10 July 2003 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I get mistaken for Romanian, what is their country like?

it means that you remind them of her:

Gerhard Schroeder has just cancelled his vacation in Italy, due to the "belching contests" scandal.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Thursday, 10 July 2003 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't understand J0hn's post.

Cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 10 July 2003 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Randall Simon weighs in.

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 10 July 2003 04:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I pick Germany....
(And the average Britain has about 200 x more style than the average American)

maddylonglegs, Thursday, 10 July 2003 09:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Gerhard Schroeder has just cancelled his vacation in Italy, due to the "belching contests" scandal.

Well, that's one free sunbed!

Silvio Berlusconi (Matt DC), Thursday, 10 July 2003 09:49 (twenty-two years ago)

The multi-talented Squadra Azzurra comfortably beat West Germany in the final (3-1), helped by another goal from their inspiration, Paolo Rossi. Dino Zoff, the 40-year-old Italian captain, was presented with the FIFA World Cup trophy by the King of Spain, Juan Carlos. And so Italy became, after Brazil, the second country to win three FIFA World Cups.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 10 July 2003 10:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, what are we comparing here? Sophia Loren, Italo-house, boscaiola sauce, Claudio Gentile, Amarcord, Peroni, "The Divine Comedy", and Verdi to... Karl Baedeker?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 10 July 2003 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Sophia Loren, Italo-house, boscaiola sauce, Claudio Gentile, Amarcord, Peroni, "The Divine Comedy", and Verdi

They all suck. Or is that your point?

Sommermute (Wintermute), Thursday, 10 July 2003 10:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Dante's good, actually.

Ayingerbrau still wins.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 10 July 2003 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Daniele Davoli: S&D

dave q, Thursday, 10 July 2003 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

But Ayingerbrau is about as German as my arse, therefore it doesn't count.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 10 July 2003 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt it says on every pump it comes from the foothills of the Bavarian Alps!! Has the level of trust in authority sunk so low?!

Sommermute (Wintermute), Thursday, 10 July 2003 10:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Bavarian Alps, Stoke-On-Trent?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 10 July 2003 10:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I now have visions of lakes of frothy amber nectar flowing luciously through the foothills of the Alps, with fair maidens frolicking in its golden streams and jolly Teutonic men in lederhosen saluting us all with its bubbling goodness.

I don't want this vision ever to go. Germany wins.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 10 July 2003 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Matt DC has persuaded me. Eternal victory to Germany!

the great rubbish thing about Italy is that the least objectionable party in its government are the reformed Fascists.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 10 July 2003 11:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Germany, I think.

I think the recent Italian comments are a disgrace.

the pinefox, Thursday, 10 July 2003 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 10 July 2003 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Bavarian Alps, Tadcaster, I'll have you know Mr DC.

RickyT (RickyT), Thursday, 10 July 2003 11:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 10 July 2003 11:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Hi, I'm Mark, and I'm half Italian. I like it, pretty much.

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 10 July 2003 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going along with Italy, and Suzy, the Squire thing you mention way upthread is actually the Italian ultras copying English hooligans of the mid to late eighties, particularly scousers who would cheerfully don barbours and deerstalkers as they steamed through clothes shops across the country before footie matches.

chris (chris), Thursday, 10 July 2003 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Pfff. There is no shock value to my tastes being Schicki Micki. Now will you excuse me while I fix myself a Kir Royal...

Sommermute (Wintermute), Thursday, 10 July 2003 13:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Hi Mark! We like you too!

I like Italy best: catenaccio! Greatest thing ever ever (except route 1 (Centrepoint to Canada Water)).

Also: the Germans are so proud fo their lethal beer "D" that they all have stickers saying so on their cars. D-dud.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 10 July 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

stockhausen vs giancito scelsi. can't decide if you look at it that way.

but italian women are more to my liking and i eat spaghetti every wednesday and thursday for dinner.

Italy wins.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 10 July 2003 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

It's close in some ways - in literature particularly. Despite the Bauhaus and Durer, the Renaissance and Bernini means Italy wins big on art and architecture, but Germany wins more narrowly on music. Italy gets it in football, less for the national team than for Serie A. Italy wins easily for food. And I had a lovely Italian girlfriend for a while, and have never gone out with or had sex with a German. I think I have to go with Italy.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 10 July 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Sex with a German was actually really disappointing, especially when I realized he wasn't a robot but rather a pot smoking hippie.
