While we're at it, who puts chutney on what?

Spread a piece of toast or something with some chive/garlic/onion/whatever cream cheese, put scrambled eggs over the top and then put some chutney on it. Yum!!!

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Mango chutney + staph = NUM!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I like mango chutney sandwiches. Yum. Especially when made with Garlic Naan. Mango chutney and plain yoghurt is good, too. Is there anything that mango chutney doesn't go with?

I'd like to try it on a peanut butter sandwich next...

Green tomato chutney and cheese is very good too.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 10 July 2003 08:53 (twenty-two years ago)

What brands of mango chutney are good? Oxfam used to do a yummy one called Swazi Kitchen but they never have it any more. I've tried one called Ferns but it's too much like just giant unmanageable mango slices in watery goo. and yer Sharwoods and so on are overpriced and not that special. I'll be going to Lahndan soon so I'd like to stock up (Dublin not being the melting pot of ethnic supermarketage Lahndan is).

MRS BALLS is the best chutney ever and Sainsbury's seems to have recently stopped stocking it, which has cast a pall over our house.

i can't believe i'm still up; i have to wake up in 4 hours :(
anyway....ugh, all u guys sound exactly like my parents when they extol the uses of chutney on everything. i dont understand how raw onion-chutney sandwiches are even *edible.* sick! mango chutney or achaar (pickle) is best on parathas. i never liked lime achaar. it tastes like tangy shards of glass.

for brands to look for at your fav south asian supermarket, stick to the big names like pathak's, since i wouldn't trust many of those smaller brands for safety reasons. just like u shouldn't expect the pistachio ice cream you buy there to be made within the past 12 months...

Brie and Mango Chutneee. Heaven in a half-baguette.

rener (rener), Thursday, 10 July 2003 09:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Patak's mango chutney is amazing on ham and cheese sandwiches (preferably brunswick ham with proper english cheddar, not any of that orange rubber american filth) with mayonnaise (preferably hellmann's), tomato (preferably beefsteak) and lettuce (good green lettuce, on no account should you EVER use iceberg) on thick, crusty white bread.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 10 July 2003 09:50 (twenty-two years ago)

naan bread, onion bhajis & pakoras, dude, that's where it should stay! HA HA HA!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 10 July 2003 10:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Hell no, it is a great condiment on all sorts of things. Cheese especially.

-- Pinkpanther (pinkpanther4...), July 10th, 2003.

if we're being all authenticist, like... well, you wouldn't be eating onion bhajis coz they're primarily english... made out of cheap stuff (onions) and catering to english tastes... still nice, though, and proof that my sandwich is both righteous and just!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 10 July 2003 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

These people do excellent onion marmalade, I can't imagine their mango chutney being anything other than excellent.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 10 July 2003 10:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Authentic shmentic! Either way, the onion bhajis that are available in this country taste great with mango chutney. That is all!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 10 July 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Geeta's "Lime & Chilli" chutney is very good! Trust this smaller brand please.

marianna, Thursday, 10 July 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

We just ordered a big bunch of sammich-rolls from Roly Poly in my office, and I'll be getting one with curried chicken, bacon, lettuce, pineapple, swiss cheese, and MANGO CHUTNEY! I'm stoked for lunch today.

(ha, that nick-as-vegetarian thing lasted a real long time huh?)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 10 July 2003 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Onion bhajis exist in india but they do bear little relation to the ones you usually get over here, and 'bhaji' is pronouced 'baj-ya', according to my dad. 'Bar-jee' is some kind of vegetable.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 10 July 2003 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, YOUR dad. Like your dad is so special. Oh wait.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 July 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I am going mad, as I read Dan's comment as Mark S (why?) saying "Mang Chutney + Steph = NUM!"

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 10 July 2003 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Too much msg = oxymoron.

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 10 July 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)
