defend the indefensible foodstuffs: PEACHES

bringing the tradition of ILM to ILE, where i proclaim that i don't like something (ergo, liking it is indefensible AFAIC) and i find out that lots of people really do like it (ergo, my dislike for said thing is indefensible).

still, i think that there's no defense of peaches. the fruit that goes from hairy to slimy in one bite, and tastes like cat vomit. i know that i'm in a very small minority -- i.e., i've only met one other person in my life who hates peaches -- but DAMMIT I'M RIGHT!! (though peach lovers feel free to defend yr indefensible love!)

Tad (llamasfur), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Have them on pork chops.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

A sweet, ripe peach is one of the best things in the world. There is no flavour like it. I like the fuzz, but then again I eat kiwi skins.

s1utsky (slutsky), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I love them - 'cept I don't like the white ones.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the white ones best of all. But they're no good on pork chops.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Putting peaches in a can renders them irreversibly dud. Fresh peaches, however, may often hit the spot.

Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 22:13 (twenty-two years ago)

tad yr mistake wz surely eating the cat vomit!! this is a bad association to have let yrself in for

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Mmmm. My ideal Saturday involves a day centered around picking peaches at the place I frequent for this, Marburger Orchards in Fredericksburg, TX. Lots of juicy, ripe peaches, just ready to pick. Going ahead and eating a couple of peaches while picking your allotted bushel(s) is de rigueur. Plus, you always end up with the best peaches. Nothing store-bought can compare.

Innocent Dreamer (Dee the Lurker), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

For a little while when I was a teenager we had a peach tree in our backyard, a gift from some family friends. It only ever produced one (and died shortly after), but it was the best, sweetest peach I ever ate.

s1utsky (slutsky), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

peaches are ok. 'fruit cups' with canned peaches in grade school was clearly the work of the devil.

kephm, Wednesday, 9 July 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

not like peaches ARE YOU HUMAN?? weirdo. . . (and masochist so obv. this is the response you expected.

I want to go peach pickin' with Dee.

That Girl (thatgirl), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Me too!

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd go peach pickin' with the ladies ... just don't make me eat the peaches though!

Tad (llamasfur), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i think millar's onto something re canned peaches -- which means my dislike is psychological then 'cause i don't like the taste or smell of fresh peaches either.

Tad (llamasfur), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I begin to wonder if you've ever had a truly fresh peach.

Best peach I ever ate was grown in a community garden in the Lower East Side.

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 22:36 (twenty-two years ago)

best peach I ever had was golden queen from our garden in wellington. I love them, but oly fresh and they have to be ripe and warm, not fridgey cold. this could be your mistake?

isadora (isadora), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

peaches and cream: believe the hype.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

White peaches are the way to go -- can't go wrong with something as crisp as a good white peach.

I'm a nectarine guy though, cos I like my fruit sour.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I like those peechee ring gummy candies a lot too. They are sick.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

the only bad peach-related thing is that Presidents of the United States song

S1utsky you should write elegaic children's novels!

Mark S1utsky's Newbery Medal-winning The Teaches of Peaches, I like the ring of that.

s1utsky (slutsky), Wednesday, 9 July 2003 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Peaches Vs Nectarines. F I T E !

I'm with nectarine, but peaches are a close second.

the only bad peach-related thing is that Presidents of the United States song

I like that song, if only for the "peaches come from a can, they were put there by a man" line

OK, why on earth hasn't Dan Perry posted something yet about that "hairy to slimy in one bite" thing?

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 10 July 2003 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

my thought this also.plus he had another chance with the whole "syrup on a sausage" thread

Dada, Thursday, 10 July 2003 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I would love to take anyone over to Marburger to pick peaches, although to be honest this year they're not doing the peach picking thing because of the hard freeze this past winter. :( But we can pick vegetables instead, which is quite good still. Plus they sell peaches already picked right there no matter what.

And if Dada were Alex in NYC, then Alex is really holding back the best part of himself because I have really grown to adore Dada and look forward to smiling at whatever Dada posts. It's like Dada knows we all need a little levity in our lives and is doing our minds a world of good. I would love to befriend whomever Dada is now.

Dada is Alex? WTF is going on here?

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 10 July 2003 02:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I was responding to this post by Tad:

... and i am convinced that dada is alex in nyc's alter-ego.

Although in another post it was implied that Kenan may be the real "Dada". I'm more inclined to believe that now.

Innocent Dreamer (Dee the Lurker), Thursday, 10 July 2003 02:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i think that dee and myself are just having some fun, just imagining that Alex is Dada ... i did so b/c Dada posted a pic of the single for the Stranglers' "Peaches" (and the Stranglers are one of Alex's fave groups), and Dee is just kinda running with it.

Tad (llamasfur), Thursday, 10 July 2003 02:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Very ripe peaches are sweet and juicy and lovely. I like tinned peaches in syrup too, and was annoyed when my supermarket stopped doing bargain tins of this.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 10 July 2003 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Right now, fresh peaches from the local farmer's market are the closest thing I'm getting to sex.

oh yeah, i still think peaches = shit. thank you, i r weirdo.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 26 January 2004 09:24 (twenty-one years ago)

three months pass...
Just a thread revive to let you in on the latest news from my favorite peach-picking orchard:

The mornings of April 13th and 14th we had near freezing temperatures of 36° and 34°. Needless to say, I did not get very much sleep those two nights! The crop looks fine, and that should be the last time we have to worry about freeze this spring. The fruit is now rapidly developing, and we have begun the tedious job of thinning the fruit out, allowing the remaining fruit to become larger at maturity. The first variety, Regal, will probably be ready to start picking somewhere around May 20th, followed by our other 14 varieties through early August.

(Here's a handy-dandy look back at the point in the thread where I mention this peach picking activity.)

So Sam (and whomever else)... if you're still interested... y'know?

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Monday, 26 April 2004 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I defend, with my peach/nectarine cobbler:

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 7 July 2007 04:33 (eighteen years ago)

i like peaches fine, but fuck do they get bruised easily

nectarines > peaches

bobby bedelia, Saturday, 7 July 2007 04:38 (eighteen years ago)

If this was an ILM thread I would agree with the premise.

Oilyrags, Saturday, 7 July 2007 04:39 (eighteen years ago)

I don't understand this thread title at all. Even white peaches are okay if you get lucky with one that has a little bite to it.

A B C, Saturday, 7 July 2007 04:44 (eighteen years ago)

Seriously, dude. Peaches are their own best - and quite effective - defense.

B.L.A.M., Saturday, 7 July 2007 06:11 (eighteen years ago)

Peaches are one of the great joys of the universe. Odd thread.

Super Cub, Saturday, 7 July 2007 06:37 (eighteen years ago)

i am sure that people who love peaches will love ned's peach cobbler. just not me, though ;__;

oh, and i found out this week that a co-worker also hates peaches -- she's also pretty hot (but also pretty married).

Eisbaer, Saturday, 7 July 2007 06:54 (eighteen years ago)

i'm gonna try this coconut/cream and peaches dessert tonight. :-D

nathalie, Saturday, 7 July 2007 07:39 (eighteen years ago)

maybe a lot of people have never had a good peach?
i haven't had a good peach in definitely over 2 years. which is sad. i have prob not been trying hard enough to find them.
but good peaches, like okanagan (b.c.) peaches, holy geez so crazy good

rrrobyn, Saturday, 7 July 2007 07:49 (eighteen years ago)

nectarines > peaches

yes

31g, Saturday, 7 July 2007 12:52 (eighteen years ago)

Mmm...that looks awesome, Ned. I defend with the spiced peach sorbet I made a few days ago. A little ginger, a little cinnamon--tasted like pie without the crust.

lindseykai, Saturday, 7 July 2007 13:35 (eighteen years ago)

A really good peach is better than a nectarine, but nectarines are more reliably good than peaches.

Hurting 2, Saturday, 7 July 2007 13:42 (eighteen years ago)

Blue Bell Peaches 'n' Cream Ice Cream: yum
Actualy peaches 'n' cream: better -- but yeah you have to find a good peach. and buy heavy cream and chill it, who does that?

wanko ergo sum, Saturday, 7 July 2007 17:29 (eighteen years ago)

the premise of this thread is straight FUCKED.

s1ocki, Saturday, 7 July 2007 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

To be fair, I got a few pounds of overripe, very bruised peaches from my parents last week, and they were pretty gross. But good peaches are the best fruit ever.

Rock Hardy, Saturday, 7 July 2007 18:36 (eighteen years ago)

Peaches are one of the great joys of summer.

Michael White, Saturday, 7 July 2007 18:48 (eighteen years ago)

i have been getting some kickass nectarines lately. but they're still not better than the best peaches.

get bent, Saturday, 7 July 2007 19:39 (eighteen years ago)

Goldbud peaches, people.

Get some shipped to you, NOW, fuck the expense

Beth Parker, Sunday, 8 July 2007 00:31 (eighteen years ago)

In case you're to depressed over bad peaches to read to the end: Ron Mansfield, Goldbud's owner, will ship. Call him at 530-626-6521.

Beth Parker, Sunday, 8 July 2007 00:33 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, here's a real Goldbud Farms link

Beth Parker, Sunday, 8 July 2007 00:35 (eighteen years ago)

Man, if I had 17-24 peaches right now, I'd eat them ALL in like half an hour. If I had some way to prove this, I would. I would! I would eat these peaches for all of you! But mainly for my own peach love.

Abbott, Sunday, 8 July 2007 00:55 (eighteen years ago)

you are the fucking Kobayashi of peaches!

wanko ergo sum, Sunday, 8 July 2007 01:10 (eighteen years ago)

I think 24 is really the max I could do. If only I had some delicious peaches to test this.

I think I could do even more intense gobbling with a bunch of garden-grown tomatoes. I bet I could eat 45 or so in that time, or perhaps 120-130 cherry or grape tomatoes. I'm like a chain smoker around those things. (See also: black licorice and cheese sticks aka string cheese)

Abbott, Sunday, 8 July 2007 01:12 (eighteen years ago)

I'll have you know that Placerville, CA, home of Goldbud Farm, is also the home of Thomas Kincaid, The Painter of Light™.

Beth Parker, Sunday, 8 July 2007 01:24 (eighteen years ago)

I reckon I could scoff that many cherry tomatoes warm and ripe from a garden too Abbott!

Peaches, not so sure. I mean I like them but I'm not a big fruit fan. Too much sugar.

Trayce, Sunday, 8 July 2007 03:47 (eighteen years ago)

Now I want to make a sort of quiche/tart thing studded with cherry tomato halves. Why does it have to be winter ;_; I miss tomatoes.

Trayce, Sunday, 8 July 2007 03:50 (eighteen years ago)

When I was about five, I went to the local swimming pool. I was terrified to be in the locker room alone, because I went with my mom instead of my dad. While I was swimming, someone opened my locker and threw up on my clothes. They had quite obviously eaten peaches.

I've never eaten a peach since then and probably never will.

joygoat, Sunday, 8 July 2007 06:22 (eighteen years ago)

Donut peaches are insanely great. Small and a bit more expensive, but so so good.

clotpoll, Sunday, 8 July 2007 08:13 (eighteen years ago)

A couple of summers ago I ate so many fresh tomatoes that I vomited and had diarrhea simultaneously. I sat on the toilet with a bucket in my lap.

Beth Parker, Sunday, 8 July 2007 15:03 (eighteen years ago)

ah, the joys of summer

gershy, Sunday, 8 July 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

BLEARGH, Beth! I'm glad to say I haven't done that yet. But I've been eating my share.

Rock Hardy, Sunday, 8 July 2007 20:08 (eighteen years ago)

I've gone that far w/both the tomatoes, the peaches & actually the black licorice, and I have to say I don't mind after all that P-L-E-A-S-U-R-E...

Abbott, Sunday, 8 July 2007 20:12 (eighteen years ago)

I shudder to think of the black licorice vomit.

Beth Parker, Sunday, 8 July 2007 20:21 (eighteen years ago)

Actually, not vomit, just rapid & frequent BMs. I did vomit after eating a pound and a half (!!!!) of those Necco Valentine's Day candy hearts w/messages on them at age 10, one of the few foods I've ruined by such mad ODing.

Abbott, Sunday, 8 July 2007 20:27 (eighteen years ago)
