The ironing is delicious.

Maybe they'll go back to being really cheap again?

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 10 July 2003 09:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I doubt it!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 10 July 2003 09:34 (twenty-two years ago)

just the chuck taylor design or converse as a whole? Is there a story link?

james (james), Thursday, 10 July 2003 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)

there is now

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 10 July 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

oh fuck, yet another brand i like which i can't buy anymore...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 10 July 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

haha way cool! converse are so played out anyway

Chip Morningstar (bob), Thursday, 10 July 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Damnit.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 10 July 2003 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

FUCKETY FUCKY MONKEY.
I don't like this.
I like chuck taylor's cause they remind me of Wayne's World and Ferris Bueller etc etc
I hate Nike because they are fuckknuckles.

Nellie (nellskies), Friday, 11 July 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

One thing I've always liked about Chuck Taylors is how each pair is a little different in some particular due to the sloppy handiwork of the Chinese or Mexican laborers putting them together, I doubt this will change under Nike

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 11 July 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Chuck Taylors were produced in the US up until 2 or 3 years ago.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 11 July 2003 17:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i haven't bought a new pair of chucks in 4 or 5 years and they are still remarkably solid

compare that to the last pair of docs i bought about 3 or 4 years ago which are still maintaining the properties of boots, i suppose, but are swiss cheese

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 11 July 2003 17:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe just some of them Nicole? My high-school Chucks were definitely hecho en Mexico.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 11 July 2003 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Converse has been helped by outsourcing manufacturing overseas, said Robert Carr, editor of Inside Sporting Goods, a newsletter published in New York City. "Once they insisted on a 'Made in USA' tagline, but now they're doing what everybody else is doing, or taking advantage of cheaper foreign labor," Carr added.

For years, the company had production facilities in Massachusetts, North Carolina, Texas, and Mexico.

So I guess Mexico was the one place other than the US that they used to be produced.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 11 July 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I think we're both right, Nicole (awwww)

This is from a 2001 article in the Cape Cod Chronicle <http://www.capecodchronicle.com/column_020101.htm>:

The company is also closing plants in the United States and Mexico and selling its North Reading headquarters building for $15 million. Half of Converse’s products are already manufactured in Asia; financial analysts said one of the company’s downfalls was its insistence on keeping part of its manufacturing operations in the United States after most other sneaker makers had shifted to cheaper foreign markets.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 11 July 2003 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm still gonna wear Vans.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 11 July 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Wearing Vans right now. With the overstuffed tongue. So comfy.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 11 July 2003 17:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuckin' skaters!

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 11 July 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm gonna cut yore hair!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 11 July 2003 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
So... they're still really cheap. They're still the same shoe. Does anyone *really* care who owns the company?

Question: do you prefer to sport yours sparkly clean or filthy as hell?

slightly more subdued (kenan), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

Mine are black with red stitching/insides. They are awesome and dirty.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

They're not so cheap.

Leon C. (Ex Leon), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

I dunno... $30? You can't get any other sneaker for that. Certainly not one that's as fashionable.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I see. They're more like $40. Still.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

Mine are black and grudgingly clean, BTW.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Thursday, 9 June 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

Mine are black and falling apart a bit after about 9-10 months, just like the last pair I had. I wear them every day though and love them dearly. I'm sad they're owned by Nike though (only found out rtecently) so I might switch next time. I dunno though, i love my Chucks.

Crackity (Crackity Jones), Thursday, 9 June 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

Mine are terribly dirty but when they were new, they looked like this:

http://www.boomspeed.com/starguitar69/converse.jpg

My brother-in-law painted them for me as a birthday present at the height of my White Stripes obsession a couple of years ago. They make good conversation-starters. :-) I like that they're all dirty now but it's pretty sad that the colours are all faded.

Roz (Roz), Thursday, 9 June 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

the only all stars i can find these days are trying to be a little flashier than normal, like with a grey stripe running down the middle or something. i had a pair of black all stars that should have lasted forever but they got ripped apart by wolves and the guy who fixes my shoes says it wasn't worth putting them back together. anyway i feel like i've "outgrown" all stars and yet they're definitely nice for lazy days when you feel like dressing down and just hanging out around the house.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 9 June 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

also i hate all other "gym shoes"--overpriced and ugly.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 9 June 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

You can easily get athletic shoes for $40. Virtually anywhere, too. New Balances are typically about that price, plus they have the whole "MADE IN AMERICUH" thing that people like.

Alan Conceicao (Alan Conceicao), Thursday, 9 June 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

but i have really specific ideas of what i like to wear, or what looks good on me, and gym shoes definitely do not fit. i judge other people rather harshly when they are wearing bad shoes.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 9 June 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

it's like my grandma always said. The most important things are your shoes and your haircut. It's so true.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 9 June 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

Other brands have arch support too, not that anyone really cares much about those damn arches these days.

mike h. (mike h.), Thursday, 9 June 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

I don't think I could outgrow Chucks. I love the way they feel when you tie them tight, they're like a second skin. They protect your soles but your feet don't feel like they're encased in 6 pounds of leather and foam.

n/a (Nick A.), Thursday, 9 June 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

Me, yesterday biking to the beach in my chuck taylors. They were "converted" from high tops to low cuts by me.

God I hate buying shoes. My feet are slightly different sizes, with high arches and bad ankles. This does not make shoe-buying fun at all.

>but i have really specific ideas of what i like to wear, or what looks good on me, and gym shoes definitely do not fit. i judge other people rather harshly when they are wearing bad shoes.<

What about like, the throwback Nikes or Reebok's line of DJ shoes?

Alan Conceicao (Alan Conceicao), Thursday, 9 June 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

I used to be able to get Chucks for $12 a pair at Academy Sports. I miss the '90s. Hemp Chucks were the best, they were more breathable and even softer.

My doctor told me they're horrible for your feet, wearing only Chucks and Docs for years on end are probably why I have a pinched nerve in my foot that occasionally flairs up (planar fascitis?) and makes it painful to walk.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Thursday, 9 June 2005 20:42 (twenty years ago)

The canvas feels different to me. Then again, I'm used to seeing old beat up vintage ones and don't remember seeing a fresh pair of the originals.

I've been wearing green cloth Adidas shelltoes, but I think I need to get a pair of these:

i put arch support thingies in mine when i wore them.

latebloomer: Pain Don't Hurt (latebloomer), Thursday, 9 June 2005 20:47 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that didn't occur to me when I was 14.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Thursday, 9 June 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

chucks are bad shoes, fall apart easily, expensive and are uncomfortable. also i find the people that wear them usually lack imagination and character. this does not make me a shoe snob.

chaki, Monday, 8 October 2007 23:46 (eighteen years ago)

I said I would continue to steal Chuck Taylor knockoffs from charity stores when this was originally posted, and I have kept this promise.

roxymuzak, Monday, 8 October 2007 23:47 (eighteen years ago)

how many pairs have you stolen?

jergïns, Monday, 8 October 2007 23:48 (eighteen years ago)

i support your decision to wear knockoffs as they are probably less than half the $54.99 retail OVERprice of actual chucks.

chaki, Monday, 8 October 2007 23:49 (eighteen years ago)

I have had two. When the first pair wore out, I wore them into the store and wore new ones out (of the store).

tremendoid, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 00:57 (eighteen years ago)

I was sorta rooting against Manny :(

remy bean, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 01:04 (eighteen years ago)

Chaki, the $94 pair are a "limited edition" with extra eyelets, dood. That's still stupid money but they're not the basic Chucks, either.

Laurel, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 01:04 (eighteen years ago)

i got a pair of "premiere" all-stars (like these but green). look good, better foot support.

haitch, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 01:18 (eighteen years ago)

$94 for extra eyelets?!

chaki, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 01:55 (eighteen years ago)

that's cheap, at $22.50 an eyelet

remy bean, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 01:58 (eighteen years ago)

I can just imagine my dad saying, "Those eyelets better be made outta gold." (He said that about a $65 industrial garbage can once.)

Abbott, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 02:00 (eighteen years ago)

My mom says that my cats are dipped in gold because their vet bill was five hundred dollars once.

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 02:03 (eighteen years ago)

Our parents equate seemingly arbitrary high costs with precious metals, haha.

Abbott, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 02:04 (eighteen years ago)

Haha! My mom actually CALLS them "dipped in gold" instead of their names. She will walk in the door and indicate each of them with a waving arm, saying "Dipped in gold, dipped in gold".

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 02:07 (eighteen years ago)

chaki u just a str8 up hater

deej, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 02:09 (eighteen years ago)

i have one friend who wears them and is male and all he does is bitch about how they're giving him blisters.

deej, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 02:10 (eighteen years ago)

also re: wear them with inserts, you could say that about any shoe! "these hallowed out pieces of timber are perfectly fine if u wear them with inserts"

deej, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 02:11 (eighteen years ago)

I wore mine with inserts and they still hurt my feet. There's hardly any space in them for inserts anyway.

Abbott, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 02:13 (eighteen years ago)

You are all middle class whiners.

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 02:15 (eighteen years ago)

chaki, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 02:38 (eighteen years ago)

I miss my hemp Chucks. Newer canvas ones seem to fit like shit and are falling apart straight out of the box, stitching hanging loose, etc.

milo z, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 02:42 (eighteen years ago)

Or maybe the canvas ones were always terrible, but at $15.95/pair from Academy Sports it was acceptable. For $40+/pair, not so much.

milo z, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 02:43 (eighteen years ago)

i love both pairs of my adidas campus suede sneaks. they cost $60 each and i dont care.

that you wear chux all the time

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 02:53 (eighteen years ago)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 03:00 (eighteen years ago)

chucks are defly horribly made and uncomfortable and last about 5 minutes. still i will always have a sentimental soft spot in my heart for black high tops and of course girls who wear them.

s1ocki, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 05:09 (eighteen years ago)

Chucks are pretty cool. They hurt sometimes, but if you wear them on and off with normal shoes they are alright. I spent way too much money on these recently: http://www.keepcompany.com/images/products/large_images/Tob_BO.jpg They come soon in the mail. I hope they fit!

freewheel, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 05:42 (eighteen years ago)

sheesh those are worse than A shoes

chaki, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 05:43 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, I'm bored with vans slip ons though, ergo, weird decisions happen.

freewheel, Tuesday, 9 October 2007 05:50 (eighteen years ago)

I've owned a pair of Chucks continuously since 1987 when I mail ordered a pair from an ad in the back of Transworld Skateboarding. I'm wearing a pair right now that I've had for five years now. Maybe this is why they're still intact and were cheap when purchased.
