Amphetamine twigs! There's a few Somalian shops on the Caledonian Road, I keep meaning to buy some but I don't want to get ripped off as I don't know what I'm buying. Anybody tried this stuff? Would they sell it over the counter to non-Africans? It's apparently the big thing in London now.

As far as I know it's not illegal (yet) in the UK, so I don't see why they wouldn't sell it to you.

It's good - more like mildish (but much longer acting) coke than sulphate. The main drawback is the length of time it takes to reach full effect (there's a limit to how fast you can chew shit-tasting shrubbery). You can boost it a bit and bring it on quicker by taking 2 or 3 Sudafed every hour throughout the night (whose active ingredient is closely related to one of Khat's active principles norpseudoephedrine [=cathine]). Cathinone is the main ingredient and the one that starts deteriorating after 48 hours which is why you need to get the stuff fresh.

I think cat (methcathinone) the newish designer drug which bears the same relationship to cathinone as crystal meth does to sulphate may become a big drug craze over the next decade because of the easy availability of its chemical precursors (it's not sythesized from the plant itself but rather from ephedrine or asthma products or from such things as Drano or battery acid).

explain asthma puffers as drug stimulant craze..please?

Geoff, Wednesday, 19 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

current puffers (salbutamol generic equivs) = dud

previous medication = benzedrine etc = uppers as used by James Bond/Lester Bangs and their ilk

"explain asthma puffers as drug stimulant craze..please?"

To manufacture amphetamines illicitly has always been a difficult and dangerous process. But fairly recently it was discovered that ephedrine (which is found in various asthma products [and which is an amphetamine-related substance but a weak and rubbish one that makes you puke all night] or the common cold medication pseudoephedrine (Sudafed) can quite easily be converted into methcathinone, a more powerful version of the amphetamine-related substance which gives khat its effect (cathinone). Not only that, there seems to be a whole host of household products which could do the job as well as ephedrine should that become more restricted. Hence the likelihood of a boom of ecstasy proportions. (You heard it here first).

HERE'S ALL YOU NEED TO PREPARE IT:

Collander w/ reletively small holes

Shaved Ice

Pseudephedrine tablets, 100 of 30mg each.

Potassium Permaganate crystals, of reasonably pure origin

Purified water [TAP WATER WILL *NOT* FUNCTION ADEQUATELY IN MOST CASES]

Refridgerator chilled to just over 0c.

Turkey Baster or other method of measuring water in mililiter quantities.

Isopropanol for quenching KMnO4.

Ethanol optional for speeding drying process.

Acetone for the washing of crystals.

My first khat experience was in the summer of '96 (not '69) at the Reading Festival. It gave me a mild but pleasant buzzy sensation somewhat akin to drinking too many cups of coffee minus the urge to urinate copiously.

I have a *feeling* that use of the drug was made unlawful immediately after that weekend - there was certainly a piece of legislation introduced in '96 that clamped down on many hitherto legal highs.

Then again all Somalian grocers are law abiding and upstanding pillars of the community and I am most certain that they would never intentionally flout this country's draconian drugs legislation. ;-)

Buying chat = supporting marginal economy of eastern Ethiopian highlands ... but then again buying chat = supporting the fact that chat is currently the only thing grown in the eastern Ethiopian highlands, a region that could really use some sort of non- cash subsistence-level grain agriculture. The mountainsides are literally covered with the stuff; every few minutes, a giant truckload of it rumbles down the road, followed by completely spastic guys with machine guns. (Hopped-up guys with automatic weapons = dud.) Off to the Arab world -- but unfortunately, not as much wealth seems to come back as one would expect.

There is something really weird about being completely surrounded with drug agriculture. Obviously chat it's not coca or opium poppies, but it's not exactly tobacco, either. You see a whole lot of people in this area just sitting by roadsides and acting really, really weird.

I couldn't remember whether it became a controlled drug as part of the legislation which criminalised ketamine and GHB, but I've just checked an uptodate website and apparently it's still perfectly legal to possess and sell it in the UK (but not in the US).
