Chas and Dave to thread.

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 10 July 2003 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

ILE would only torture and barbeque it and then make jokes about it.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 10 July 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

No.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 10 July 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

You can't have a rabbit. It's a waste of money because Glenn Close will just end up boiling it.

NA. (Nick A.), Thursday, 10 July 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Only if you promise you're not going to use it to capture giant clams.

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 10 July 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Luna speaks from experience perhaps?

Mark C (Mark C), Thursday, 10 July 2003 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I want a pony.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 10 July 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

ILE would only torture and barbeque it and then make jokes about it.

No, we'd only ask it be served with our tapas. With a good sangria.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 July 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

rabbits don't do much, so they are a decent pet for a kid. so long as the kid doesn't grow bored of the bunny after two days.

kephm, Thursday, 10 July 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

...and isn't a boa constrictor in disguise.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 10 July 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Apparently ILE would use it to catch kittens, which would then be used to catch catfish.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 10 July 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Look, I've said no, okay? Don't ask me again. < /best mom voice>

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 10 July 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

(Haha Nick, did you mean to say that a rabbit is a good pet if your child isn't a boa constrictor in disguise? If so, CLASSIC!)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 10 July 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

"No, we can't have a rabbit. Do you want people to mistake us for hippies?"

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 10 July 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I want a hovercraft.

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 10 July 2003 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 10 July 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Rabbits? In the house? What next, squirrels? Possums? < /overbearing [and slightly effeminate apparently, in that he replies to "mum"] dad>

ANDREW: I think they’re coming.

ANYA: Oh, god. I’m terrified. I didn’t think— I mean, I just figured you’d be terrified and I would be sarcastic about it.

ANDREW: Picture happy things. A lake, candy canes, bunnies…

ANYA: (suddenly confident and determined) Bunnies. Floppy, hoppy, bunnies.

(later)

ANDREW: (terrified, boxed in) I have swimmer’s ear!

ROSIE RABBIT TO THREAD!

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 10 July 2003 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

My father had a rabbit. He thought it was a duck.

Ray Moore (MarkH), Friday, 11 July 2003 08:22 (twenty-two years ago)

No rabbits. We're not having any Myxomatosis getting in here, thank you.

kate (kate), Friday, 11 July 2003 08:26 (twenty-two years ago)

apparently baby rabbits are called kittens.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 11 July 2003 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Rabbits are interesting in that they can be both pets and food. Most animals tend to be one or t'other.

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 11 July 2003 08:36 (twenty-two years ago)

My cat hates rabbit flavoured cat food. Why don't Whiskas make mouse flavoured cat food?

C J (C J), Friday, 11 July 2003 08:41 (twenty-two years ago)

That reminds me of a conversation I had once where somebody was ridiculing the fact that there was beef flavoured cat food, commenting that no cat could ever bring down a cow. I pointed out that all carnivores will eat carrion given the chance; after all, why go to the trouble of hunting something when there is a dead animal there just waiting for you?

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 11 July 2003 08:53 (twenty-two years ago)

...am I too much of a scientist for this thread?

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 11 July 2003 08:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Fish can be both pets and food, so can pigeons and chickens I suppose.

I'm having a pie tonight. Not rabbit though.

Archel (Archel), Friday, 11 July 2003 08:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Where is that link that was posted on ILE about the fact that cats eat things based on their *smell* rather than their taste. They like the smell of things which are high in protein and fat - hence why they will eat repulsive tasting things like earwax. Maybe it's not the rabbit flavour that your cat has a problem with, but rather the smell of the catfood.

kate (kate), Friday, 11 July 2003 08:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Fish can be both pets and food

Not the same fish tho! Have you eaten goldfish? Or guppies?

MarkH (MarkH), Friday, 11 July 2003 08:58 (twenty-two years ago)

People eat carp. Goldfish are just ornamental carp.

kate (kate), Friday, 11 July 2003 08:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I have some going spare.

Nice ones. Fluffy black ones.

well if you dont want to have the rabbit in the house or as a pet or whatever and you want to gross your kids out just tell them how rabbits really eat.. they eat food then because its not fully absorbed they go back and eat the liquidy crap they took before. that ends up as those cute lil pellets they crap out the second time around.. the lil crap eaters.. since the original post was bout rabbits right .. (laughing my demonic ass of in Canada at anyone who would want to own a shit eating rabbit)....

He is still a bit wary of us coz he is only a baby and the journey to his new home fwightened him but I'm sure he'll adapt in no time

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

You should think about getting a second one - they're sociable creatures. You need to keep them apart at first so it's a bit more of a time investment but it's worth it.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I read that - I'll see how we go with this one. I hear male wabbits tend to fight with each other if they aint together from the start though, I'm not sure if we have enough room for another wabbit hoose and I dont think Rfur's is roomy enough for two....

he was born in the mean streets of chorley but like a rabbity version of babe, he, and his sister, are now living the highlife in the big city. they were brought to us in a little cage and he'd done a wee on his sister's back. she must still be mad about that because she always shoves him out of the way and sits on him. he's kinda clumsy and dumb, always sliding about and copying what she does, he's not very brave.

Rabbit's can mate more than once (like dogs) and so it's likely the mother bun mated with two different males - so you've three potential sources of DNA in the offspring. They have mum's DNA and separate fathers. (Not so weird, really - I've fostered buns from the same litter and they've all looked different.)

Check-out the following sites for info. on house-rabbit care:

http://www.rabbit.org
http://www.houserabbit.co.uk/rwf/information.htm

I currently have three house rabbits (well, one's just being fostered while her broken leg recovers, but I'm kinda becoming attached, so she may/may not be a long-term resident) and they're marvelous - just be sure to hide ALL wires (and books) (and blankets) (and carpets) (and expensive guitars) (and electronics) (and walls).

jeez beth, you sure know how to bring the party.. but yeah, getting them neutered is top of our to do list. worried that we'll have got the genders wrong and ernest and maisie will go through some difficult identity issues when they reach puberty.

thanks for that laura, so there's no chance those two rabbits will have the same father? i saw some pictures of the other rabbits in that litter and almost all of them looked different colourwise and furwise. and yes, they can be unbelievably naughty - jumping up into a plantpot twice as tall as them to dig away happily, constantly gnawing away at my shoes, etc but it's all worth it to watch them run around crazily, skidding about on the floor and doing that mad fred astaire-style kick in the air.

Affectian (Affectian), Friday, 25 August 2006 13:05 (nineteen years ago)

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Friday, 25 August 2006 15:30 (nineteen years ago)

doing that mad fred astaire-style kick in the air

Believe it or not, that's a patented move, adorably called the "Binky." It really is damn funny, isn't it?

About the father(s) - no guarantee that they have different fathers, but it's likely - any idea of what the mother looked like? From the above photo, I'd guess that they both have some of the Lionhead breed in them. After that, I'm not sure. But looking at the photo (again) it looks like they've different shaped ears, which likely means different genetic backgrounds. I'm not an expert on this, though.

I would get them spayed/neutered as soon as they're of age - and be prepared for some squabbling as they enter puberty, in the meantime.

Be careful of what they chew/consume - one of my buns decided to eat the stuffing out of the futon - got himself a blockage and spent four days at the emergency vet's, to the tune of ... well, don't want to think about that, so we'll just say it was absurdly expensive. Anyway, watch what they consume and watch their output - no poop for more than 12 hours and you need to be concerned.

Post more photos, when you've the time. Laura

Who has a rabbit? How is it?

admrl, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 20:02 (sixteen years ago)

i do. she was ill last week - she wasn't eating and we noticed a small puddle on the rug where she'd been sat. if rabbits aren't eating it's a sign that something is seriously wrong, they need to be digesting constantly. we immediately took her straight to the 24 hour emergency vets and they kept her in overnight. the flat felt so quiet without her, was horrible. the vets put a catheter in her ear to pump vitamins etc into her bloodstream. i was certain she was going to die as rabbits react terribly to things involving the gut but she came round and we were able to bring her home two days later, which was amazing, so great to see her bounding and binkying round the flat.

we don't know for sure what it was that caused this. the first vet we saw thought it was something to do with spurs on her teeth hurting her tongue and stopping her from eating, and recommended an operation to grind them down - we weren't keen on this as it'd involve anesthetic and that's a huge risk in itself. thankfully the next 2 vets we spoke to said they didn't think this was necessary so long as she was still eating, so we decided against it.

a couple of days before she fell ill i bought her one of those corn-on-the-cob things for small pets, a real corn on the cob but glazed with something or other. she left it alone for a while but on the morning she was ill she'd eaten a whole load of it. i'm guessing that as corn goes through humans undigested it must have done something similar to our rabbit and caused her some pain. i later checked the small print on the corn and it said something like 'be careful how much you give to your pet, keep it in proportion'. bit odd as it's part of a cob, one huge thing, very tricky to break bits off. i think it was that though, so i won't be buying them again and recommend any rabbit owners reading don't either.

the whole thing cost about £300, totally worth it, thank god for 24 hour animal hospitals. here she is:

yeah we take her to the local water park! she's a house rabbit so doesn't see much grass, it's pretty funny to see her react to ducks, leaves, ponds, etc

she's a lionhead i think, possibly cross with another breed, she's a proper ball of fluff. i guess all pet owners say this but i've never seen another rabbit as cute as her

I see about three wild ones every morning between the campus parking lot and the offices. They've recently had babies and this morning there were at least eleven of them all eating grass, looking at the weird ICT'ers going to work. Some of the wee rabbits were chasing the ducks who also inhabit the green space and natural waste water recycling moat type thing surrounding our server building.

I always wonder but have never searched on the internet why their tail is so white, when they run away you can see them for ages - how is this supposed to discourage predators?

StanM, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 21:17 (sixteen years ago)

Kills w cuteness.

But not someone who should be dead anyway (Laurel), Tuesday, 9 June 2009 21:19 (sixteen years ago)

also are they the only animal which doesn't have leathery pads on the underside of their feet? it's all fluff all the way round

and i was wondering, if you had a rabbit whose front two legs were withered from birth, would it learn to walk on its back two legs human-style, like that dog who was born with only two back legs? cruel to fuck with nature but i'd love to have a rabbit waddling about the flat like a real-life disney creature

NI, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 21:20 (sixteen years ago)

I think they use their white tails to warn each other of baddies? Or maybe that's whitetail deer.

cant go with u too many alfbrees (Abbott), Tuesday, 9 June 2009 21:20 (sixteen years ago)

"fluff all the way round" suggests to me you have never actually picked up a rabbit. They will scratch the fuck out of you.

This Ace of Base is driving me crazy (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 9 June 2009 21:20 (sixteen years ago)

yeah apart from the claws

NI, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 21:23 (sixteen years ago)

They will scratch...some of the time. Most lethal are growly females who don't wanna be picked up. My own black rabbit Muggs used to respond to cals, ride on toboggans in the winter, and travel in my bike basket.

502 Bad Gateway (suzy), Tuesday, 9 June 2009 21:25 (sixteen years ago)

Also, fleeing/running rabbits look totally inefficient. Their hind legs are too strong and they jump more than they run, with their back half pushed up way too high every time.
Will see if I can document this one of these days. :-)
