two new reason to hate the lakers

gary payton and karl malone have both verbally committed to coming to the lakers next year. malone should provide some rebounds, and payton will bring the mouth and the swagger the lakers have been lacking. it's great for the nba!

fuck - they got mailman too?!!! at least this mean he won't get kareem's record

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 10 July 2003 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Cause I needed a reason?

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 10 July 2003 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh boy, the NBA really needed a Yankees!

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Thursday, 10 July 2003 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Go Raiders.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 10 July 2003 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't worry folx the Warriors will deny!

Leee (Leee), Thursday, 10 July 2003 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

haha - that or the Hawks will take em out in the Finals!

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 10 July 2003 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I understand they'll need someone at guard.

TMFTML (TMFTML), Thursday, 10 July 2003 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

lots of nba players have said that they're more interested in winning than in money, but payton and malone, if they both follow through on their words, will be the first two in league history to actually forego millions in order to win. it's a testament to the greatness of the lakers that men of such character would make such an unprecedented sacrifice. i'm prouder than ever to be a laker fan.

dan (dan), Friday, 11 July 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

that was beautiful

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 11 July 2003 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

thank you.

dan (dan), Friday, 11 July 2003 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm of mixed emotions - I love Payton, hate Malone. I'm vaguely neutral towards the Lakers (during the 80s: Pistons over Lakers, Lakers over Celtics).

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 11 July 2003 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm of very mixed emotions, because I really don't like the Lakers at all. (Portland fan, dontcha know.) On the one hand, a lot of raw, if aged, talent. On the other hand, this should be the most entertaining team in a long time; at first, they'll get along great, it'll be all skittles and K-Y Jelly. But when Malone starts realizing JBlount's first point, and Shaq starts bitching about everyone, and Payton starts getting that I'm-gonna-kick-someone's-ass-even-though-I-look-like-I'm-in-the-Modern-Jazz-Quartet-in-1959 look, and Kobe starts getting pissed that he's no longer The Story...oooh, fun times.

and dan, it's not that big a deal when multi-millionaires decide to only get 4 million or 2 million a year instead of 20 million. but I suspect you know that, just like you know that I'm just bitching about it because Payton's second choice was the Blazers.

Neudonym, Friday, 11 July 2003 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

it shouldn't be that big a deal, except it's never happened before in basketball, unless you want to count rick fox (i don't). win or lose, the soap opera/conflict/comedic potential is tremendous, and it will definitely piss off many of the right people.

dan (dan), Friday, 11 July 2003 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I suspect it's about to happen to the New Jersey Nets as well.

TMFTML (TMFTML), Friday, 11 July 2003 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Nevermind other sports, wherein Kariya and Selanne go to Colorado as a package deal...

jm (jtm), Friday, 11 July 2003 05:05 (twenty-two years ago)

It's hard to see the title as a close thing, with them joinging Kobe and Shaq. If they can all play together, that is.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 11 July 2003 10:54 (twenty-two years ago)

It's settled then, loser of the Warriors-Hawks NBA Championships buys dinner. :D

Leee (Leee), Friday, 11 July 2003 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

After hearing this, I'm starting to like the Lakers again.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 11 July 2003 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Dan Perry you are fucking NUTS!

Anyway, I think Brian Cook and Kareem Rush might play just as big of roles as the Mailman and Payton. Also, the Kobe kase seems hella serious, so they still might be in trouble.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 11 July 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

if they're getting DNA samples, something is up

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 11 July 2003 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

wuh? I hadn't heard that news.

I think an Ellen Degeneres-Laura Bush make out session might have more chemistry than the Lakers' starting five next year.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 11 July 2003 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

But I kinda hope the Lakers win just cuz I really want Karl Malone to buy Phil Jackson a big rig.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 11 July 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

By fluke of injuries, somehow it will end up the Spurs vs. the Nets in the finals again with more scintillating basketball with scores like 79-73 final score in overtime.

Basketball is much different than football, but I can't help but think of a couple of years ago when the Redskins signed up all of those ancient allpros (Bruce Smith, Deon etc.) then finished 7 and 9.

earlnash, Friday, 11 July 2003 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

The Mavs only have another four or five seasons of Raef LaFrentz+Shawn Bradley for only $15mil a year.

A bargain!
