Which city is better?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 11 July 2003 05:00 (twenty-two years ago)

melbourne. next question.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 11 July 2003 05:07 (twenty-two years ago)

ooh we just had this fite on Usenet (aus.culture.gothic) and it got nasty. Each city got heinously offended at t'other city's denizen's comments.

Of course, Melbourne is k-rox0r, say I. More class, friendlier people, better weather (and yes, because it is cooler and damper), nice parks... TRAMS! Better live band scene, better pubs, shopping, restaurants, etc...

Thats just my 2cents tho.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 11 July 2003 05:08 (twenty-two years ago)

melbourne.

daniel cheail (daniel cheail), Friday, 11 July 2003 06:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Melbourne.

Andrew (enneff), Friday, 11 July 2003 06:38 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm giving props to wodonga, cos my niece lives there. when i was 16 i liked melbourne better than sydney, though i would have to experience them both again as an adult to really decide, i think. tugboat and 99 are grebt.

di smith (lucylurex), Friday, 11 July 2003 06:53 (twenty-two years ago)

no contest - Melbourne.

sydney is like melbourne's older, slutty, less cultured sister.

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Friday, 11 July 2003 07:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris, that makes Sydney better doesn't it? Or have you had less positive experiences with older, sluttier less cultured sisters than I have?

Sydney's better for everything but haircuts. In Melbourne, everyone's a hairdresser, even if they don't realise it yet. Especially their artists. And why are Melbournites always on ILE? Because in Sydney everyone's outside, enjoying the sun and the beach.

Oh yes, but Melbourne is also better in another respect - everyone there has sex with everyone, because it's so small. And that sounds like fun.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 11 July 2003 08:04 (twenty-two years ago)

having lived in sydney for my entire adult life, i 'should' say sydney, but i cant do that.
melbourne always seemed to have the aura of more 'art and heart'.
sydney is great, no doubt about it, but it is a busy screaming city with the feel of speed, and less substance somehow.
its kind of like auckland vs wellington in nz. auckland has all the 'stuff', yet lacks a soul, but wellington owns the real deal.

donna (donna), Friday, 11 July 2003 08:11 (twenty-two years ago)

maw maw maw maw maw, i'm from sydney and i have an inferiority complex, maw maw maw maw maw maw maw

daniel cheail (daniel cheail), Friday, 11 July 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

melbourne, easy.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 11 July 2003 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Gaz, where are you? We need you now!

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Saturday, 12 July 2003 02:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Burn styles!

OCP (OCP), Saturday, 12 July 2003 07:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Melbourne on so many levels it's ridiculous.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Saturday, 12 July 2003 08:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Sydney, Melbourne has the inferiority complex

webber (webber), Saturday, 12 July 2003 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank you Webber. I was getting worried. Considering moving even.

I have dreams sometimes where Melbourne acquires symbolic value. Going to Melbourne is going to hell, whereas going to Brisbane is going to heaven.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Saturday, 12 July 2003 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

are you anti-antarctican?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Saturday, 12 July 2003 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

tempe ain't representative of sydney colin. you're living in a tiny strip of paradise...

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 13 July 2003 08:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Hooray! Gaz is here to save the day *plane goes overhead*.

No Jim, I'm not anti-arctarian. I'm a chronic teaser.

Melbournites, you're not supposed to just say 'Melbourne' and nothing else. That's no fun. You're supposed to give stingingly witty reasons that cut Sydneysiders to the quick, like Chris did.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Sunday, 13 July 2003 08:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Sydney would be OK if you got rid of the Sydneysiders.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Sunday, 13 July 2003 08:46 (twenty-two years ago)

That's more like it!

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Sunday, 13 July 2003 08:46 (twenty-two years ago)

who's computer you hijacking colin?
LPD in mail tomorrow.

i have retired to the central coast

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 13 July 2003 08:52 (twenty-two years ago)

sydney tought me how to be a crazy driver

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 13 July 2003 08:52 (twenty-two years ago)

'Melbourne has an inferiority complex...'

Next to your average Martin Plaza mattress muncher, Muhammad Ali and Jeff Kennett sound like they had inferiority complexes.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Sunday, 13 July 2003 08:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Hi Gaz. The computer is my girlfriend's. And no, it doesn't have a soundcard, and she doesn't like me using it on weekends. Now get back to that CD burner, bitch.

Jim, Melbourne taught me how to recognise an artist: they wear a beret.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Sunday, 13 July 2003 08:56 (twenty-two years ago)

y'know i couldn't tell you the last time i saw someone wearing a beret

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 13 July 2003 08:57 (twenty-two years ago)

capital is the driving force behind real art, you melbournians are living in a quaint village past.

colin...you're at your girlfriends and browsing ILE??? get back to the good cop/bad cop tongue lashings.

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 13 July 2003 09:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Gaz, she's not happy. She wants me to restrict my computer time to 2 hours a day. She cannot believe I am wasting my time on this site. A leetle music package is on its way to you tomorrow.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Sunday, 13 July 2003 09:05 (twenty-two years ago)

also jim, you realise sydney offers many more possibilities regarding watersports? ;-)

gaz (gaz), Sunday, 13 July 2003 09:33 (twenty-two years ago)

really?!?!

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 13 July 2003 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Gaz is referring to Troughman.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 14 July 2003 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

whuzzat?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 14 July 2003 01:06 (twenty-two years ago)

A gentleman who could be found at the big parties here, in the men's facilities. He was a legend.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 14 July 2003 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

what was that Joe Hockey comment they other day? something about sydney needing to show a bit more leg to attract the tourist dollar?? spread those legs sydney, you need roots to get the attention.

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Monday, 14 July 2003 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Troughman was at the Oxf*rd a couple of weeks ago Colin!!!!

and i was referring to swimming, diving, surfing etc anyway...

gaz (gaz), Monday, 14 July 2003 02:35 (twenty-two years ago)

of course you were. what else could it possibly mean?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 14 July 2003 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris, you're crass. But you are good with the innuendo. You should definitely be a creative for some bastard Sydney advertising firm. Grab your skateboard and get over here!

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 14 July 2003 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Colin, i prefer "stingingly witty".

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Monday, 14 July 2003 02:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Melbourne, I have never been to Sydney but I have been overseas and Melbourne stacks kup pretty well next to european cities... i.e Rome, Vienna, Prague, Dublin
Cheaper, more multicultural, better food, easier to get around.. loads of festivals which can be shit in it's own right but the comedy festival is rawk and the film festivals pretty fun and the underground film festival etc etc etc etc

Nellie (nellskies), Monday, 14 July 2003 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

they should abolish the St Kilda festival though

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 14 July 2003 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

if sydney fucks you on yer first date as she yabbers about worlds best practise and "big parties" then melbourne seduces with her witty and sophisticated conversation and tales about travels in europe. she doesn't sleep with you on the first date but waits and teases with her sly charm. soon she has yer heart, mind and body.

(somebody help me, i'm killing the metaphor)

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Monday, 14 July 2003 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

sydney sodomised me brutally and stole my wallet

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 14 July 2003 03:10 (twenty-two years ago)

* may be an exaggeration

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 14 July 2003 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

but did she piss on you as well?

*loud groans*

gaz (gaz), Monday, 14 July 2003 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Its always pissing down in Sydney.... BOOM BOOM!

Oh, I kill me.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 14 July 2003 03:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic Sydney planning:

Sticking that bloody ugly bloated 'Starship Enterprise' (officially known as the Sydney Sports Stadium) right in the spot where it hides the Centrepoint Tower view of the much more historic and interesting SCG.

Fortunately the harbor and the other Sydney landmarks were already in place well before the current generation of cowboys first placed one square block atop another in their playpens, or God knows how they'd have stuffed it up.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Monday, 14 July 2003 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

are you a planning armchair critic as well Fred?

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Monday, 14 July 2003 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

and the toaster has proved a winner after all!

gaz (gaz), Monday, 14 July 2003 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I know what I like Chris.

(Me? I'm just a lawnmower. You can tell by the way I walk...

Genesis circa 1974, 'I Know What I Like'.)

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Monday, 14 July 2003 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

heh.

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Monday, 14 July 2003 03:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Tragic Daydream is a great title for his album. I urge you to visit his website:

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 30 October 2003 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Great as in highly appropriate, you mean? >:D

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 30 October 2003 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Ugh he's like a goth Darren Hayes. *shudder*

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 30 October 2003 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, Trayce, I just love it in a vacuous, Sydney kind of way. Check out this bit from the section called 'My Own Reflection' where he muses on life and art:

KILL THE INFECTED [25-Oct-2003]

I finally saw the movie "28 Days later..." tonight. It was quite good, and featured some really atmospheric sequences. However, a group of primates sitting behind us insisted on talking throughout the entire film. I felt compelled to slaughter these useless plebs as if they were 'infected' like the zombies on screen. If it were up to me, all people who disregard common courtesy would be put on an island as far away from me as possible, where they could talk as much as they wanted in the cinema.

To me it is evident that society needs division. We were not created to exist on one level. If we were all the same, there would be no order and chaos would prevail. Zombies are driven entirely by instinct, which inevitably results in anarchy. 'Regular' people are driven by lust, greed and a host of other deadly sins. This results in division and hierarchy, because only the strongest and smartest survive. In turn, a society is born which creates and sustains a civilisation through progress and technology.

So, which is worse - a world full of zombies, or people like us?

-MK.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 30 October 2003 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

oh mandy you came and you gave without taking

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 30 October 2003 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

obviously mandy has never experienced the pineapple zombie blowjob

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 30 October 2003 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Durkheim, Mead, Hugh Mackay, eat your hearts out!

'I have found the future of Sociology, and his name is... MANDY KANE???'

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Thursday, 30 October 2003 01:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I love how a tryhard goth from Dandenong thinks he's better than the plebs behind him at a film. Thats classic.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 30 October 2003 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Whinging about the yobbos in the cinema is classic Mike Monro's Current Affair or HS 50-50 column stuff, and surely that's about as un-goth as you can get while remaining rooted to planet Earth.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Thursday, 30 October 2003 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

That's hilarious Fred. Another classic moment from Mandy's diary:

CHROME MOONSHINE [13-Jun-2003]

What is it with full moons? The band and I played a show at a tiny club in the city last night, and I swear, everyone was going berserk. Rie, my lovely bass player, arrived in the alley-way to load in her gear and was confronted by the startling sight of a homeless guy with no pants on, slumped against the wall. He was apparently taking a dump.

So, then I get a call from Nick, my drummer, asking where I was.

"There's a gang at the end of the alley chroming...." he said.

"Be there in 5 seconds... I'm just around the corner."

As I passed the local convenience store, I saw this guy sitting on top of someone, pinning them to the ground. At first, I thought they were just messing around, but then he started pummelling the other person. Within seconds, a fleet of cop cars pulled up.

When I arrived, the chromers were eyeing us suspiciously, but I didn't think they meant any harm. It's sad to see how people can fuck up their lives so easily.

Anyway, we managed to strategically load in all our gear down 2 flights of stairs, and played a great show. But it wasn't over yet...

I left with Nick to get both of our cars while Matty-Ray and Rie stayed to watch the gear. As we were approaching the alley, I heard a screech of tyres, followed by a massive crash. Some guy had rammed his slick car up the rear end of a cab. A cop car was conveniently waiting nearby, and pulled up immediately. I laughed to myself as I passed. What a dickhead.

On the way home, sirens were blazing, lights were flashing and choppers were circling. A number of police cars with searchlights circled one oval I passed - obviously hunting someone down. There was an uneasy tension in the air, but it was strangely exhilarating.

It kind of reminded me of New York. At the time, it's sort of scary to be in those situations. But it's like a roller coaster. Once you get off, you just wanna go again!!! In a way, that's how I see my music.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 30 October 2003 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh my sides.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 30 October 2003 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

this is like some tragic daydream

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 30 October 2003 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey Jim - whats sad is apparently milli loves these guys. Or maybe that's not sad at all, heh. Oh god - I HAVE FRIENDS LIKE THIS.

Right thats it I'm moving to Sydney.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 30 October 2003 03:10 (twenty-two years ago)

no, wait: colin loves them too.

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 30 October 2003 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

then you will be forced to have FAPs with colin and gaz and troughman

(xp)

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 30 October 2003 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

So everyone in Melbourne has a diary like that then? Trayce, I don't know if you'll be welcome in Sydney - do you love money more than beauty? Do you have a gold tooth, sunglasses, and an Armani suit? Are you a hooker with a heart of stone? If the answer is 'yes' then come on over.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 30 October 2003 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah, you all smell ;P

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 30 October 2003 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

but thats just cos of troughman. and he's a lovely guy when you get to know him

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 30 October 2003 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, stop taking the piss out of him.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 30 October 2003 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Haw haw haw.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 30 October 2003 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh now come on Andrew, no need to call Colin one of those! ;)

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 30 October 2003 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

what colin didnt let on is that about a month ago, Colin, a statuesque lady friend of his and I went to see the Kane gang debut in this little inner city pub.

worse than anthrax.

But I realised that what mandy brought to this nasty town was a sense of theatre- you know this guy is a showman- and there just aint much of that around these days cos were all too busy trying to make bucks up here to take the time with hair, makeup and organising the kind of backing band that looked like it fell through a worm hole in 1986 Los aAngeles shortly after stepping off stage with Pat Benatar.

Now thats what melbourne has lots of that sydney doesnt- theatre sports. Theatre sports is just so zany isnt it?

you got mandy and theatre sports- I can see why you pity us.

bryce wilson, Thursday, 30 October 2003 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

'worse than anthrax' - may be taken in either of two ways; but each is quite accurate.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Thursday, 30 October 2003 04:39 (twenty-two years ago)

four years pass...

Hi AustraliLX, I need your help.

RockWiz is on SBS tomorrow night at 9.20pm, and I'm a contestant.

Does anyone have any means of digitally recording stuff off the telly - DVD recorder, HD recorder, PC, Mac etc - and if so could I get a copy somehow, somewhere? I'd 'tape' it on 'VHS' but the signal's noisy in my apartment, and I always have trouble emailing cassettes to the folks back home.

Thanks in advance for anyone who can help! (huey at arclife.co.uk)

Huey in Melbourne, Friday, 16 November 2007 02:15 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, and Melbourne by country mile.

Huey in Melbourne, Friday, 16 November 2007 02:18 (eighteen years ago)

yes i can give it a go - it will give me a chance to see if the file transfer utility in my PVR works

electricsound, Friday, 16 November 2007 02:30 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah I can give it a bash as well Huey. And awesome, good luck!

Trayce, Friday, 16 November 2007 02:50 (eighteen years ago)

Also, haw:

I deny ever having anything to do with Goth, ever, as of this moment.

-- Trayce (trayce), Thursday, October 30, 2003

LOLZ.

Trayce, Friday, 16 November 2007 02:51 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks so much guys, I really appreciate it.

Huey in Melbourne, Friday, 16 November 2007 02:53 (eighteen years ago)

I love this show, break a leg!

badg, Friday, 16 November 2007 03:56 (eighteen years ago)

I think I already did. I recorded it a few weeks ago - aced the audition, finally finding a use all that pointless music trivia soaking up my brain, but then the show itself turned out to be a New Zealand music special... I won't tell you just how many of those Kiwi questions I got right, but it's a fairly 'round' number, if you catch my drift. Enjoy!

Huey in Melbourne, Friday, 16 November 2007 04:00 (eighteen years ago)

I think this was one of my very first threads.

moley, Friday, 16 November 2007 04:05 (eighteen years ago)

Weren't we chirpy back then? We were younger.

moley, Friday, 16 November 2007 04:13 (eighteen years ago)

I was way more dad jokes then too.

Trayce, Friday, 16 November 2007 04:19 (eighteen years ago)

Anyone changed their mind 4 years on?

Huey in Melbourne, Friday, 16 November 2007 04:35 (eighteen years ago)

was this really the very first mong thread??

electricsound, Friday, 16 November 2007 04:42 (eighteen years ago)

Perhaps if you'd watched this you'd know more about the history of New Zealand music and street fashion. Not really related to the question at hand but I've been itching for a chance to post it somewhere. Oh yeah and I'll vote for Melbourne because no-one calls it Gods Country.

badg, Friday, 16 November 2007 04:47 (eighteen years ago)

Jim: Pseudo Echo one was before this wannit?

Trayce, Friday, 16 November 2007 04:50 (eighteen years ago)

Damn. This thread hasn't degenerated into a slanging match.

electricsound, Friday, 16 November 2007 04:56 (eighteen years ago)

Huey, someone else I know was just on it (and won!), and he said they don't even give you a beer, let alone a free beer, so fuck 'em, the cunts, and make sure you stash a couple in your pockets.

S-, Friday, 16 November 2007 05:15 (eighteen years ago)

No free beer no, and sadly no make-up either. But one of the assistants gave me a fag in the car park, and there was half a bottle of warm water under the desk, so I musn't grumble.

Huey in Melbourne, Friday, 16 November 2007 07:15 (eighteen years ago)

lol u got ripped off by sbs lol

King Boy Pato, Friday, 16 November 2007 08:56 (eighteen years ago)

energy flash gordon, Saturday, 17 November 2007 06:26 (eighteen years ago)

rockwiz successfully recorded, now just working out how to edit it.

what form do you want it in huey? dvd? mpeg?

electricsound, Saturday, 17 November 2007 12:44 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks Jim! I guess any quality, sendable format would be great - mpeg, avi etc. Is it easy to YSI it?

Huey in Melbourne, Sunday, 18 November 2007 21:50 (eighteen years ago)

...or DVD might be even better - I can compensate you for your time, postage & packing etc?

Huey in Melbourne, Sunday, 18 November 2007 21:55 (eighteen years ago)

cool, that should be easy - send me an email by adding a @hotmail.com to my login

electricsound, Sunday, 18 November 2007 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

Thank god you recorded it Jim, I completely forgot to :(

Trayce, Sunday, 18 November 2007 23:20 (eighteen years ago)

it's lucky that it worked too, my pvr is being a little bicth with the EPG side of things
