Have you ever copied anyone?

The other day someone said that they have worn their watch on their right wrist ever since they were an impressionable teenager in the mid 1980s, simply because they noticed in some film that Bruce Willis did this.

Have you ever copied anyone? Is imitation really the sincerest form of flattery?

C J (C J), Friday, 11 July 2003 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Everything about me is copied from someone else. I don't have an original bone in my body.

kate (kate), Friday, 11 July 2003 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

HSA'll be really pleased to hear that

dave q, Friday, 11 July 2003 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

That's not an original bone, that's The Big Idea!

kate (kate), Friday, 11 July 2003 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry I killed your thread with my filth

kate (kate), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

People I have been, with very limited degrees of success. I chronological order:

Prince.
Robert Smith.
Morrissey. (dark days)
Axl Rose.
David Byrne.
Stephen Malkmus.
Rivers Cuomo.

And when I grow up, I want to be Brian Eno.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I've copied Rich Rossovich

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry thats Rick Rossovich

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Like wot kate said but without the shagging HSA bit.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Too bad, ILE needs more drama.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

GO NEAR HSA AND I WILL SCRATCH YER EYES OUT, NICK!!!

kate (kate), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i was on a ship for long time. well, a month ok?

there was the fcken beautiful boy. no,i swear. 15-16 tanned, muscled. but also so way out of my understanding, and yet exciting.

that i copied everything he did.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been thinking hard about this, and the only thing I can think of that I do which is a conscious copy of someone else, is that when I write out a cheque I sign it diagonally across the corner instead of straight, because my Mum used to do that. How weird.

C J (C J), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

My signature is uncannily like my dad's. Obviously this is just coincidence and has nothing to do with, you know, forgery attempts.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I cut/curled/dyed my hair to look more like Janeane Garofalo about five years ago. Coincided with a goth phase too, so it worked out.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I suppose I pretty much model myself on Kurt Russell.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Escape from New York Kurt or Escape from L.A. Kurt?

teeny (teeny), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Perhaps it was a typo and N meant Ken Russell

C J (C J), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I left behind my experimentin' days when I met Emma, kate.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

N. meant Russell & Bromley.

Mark C (Mark C), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Why won't anyone take me seriously?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Because you were in Deep Blue. That movie sucked.

NA. (Nick A.), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

It's Dark Blue and it didn't.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I motherfuckin' took you seriously. Answer the question.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

N. stars in OVERBOARD!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry teeny, I haven't seen those films. Did he have an eyepatch in one of them? That one.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Well a fine fucking protege you are, then.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I wanted to be Popeye when I was five or so, to the extent that I proclaimed that was my middle name. Sadly, I hated the taste of canned spinach and my dream was deferred.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

(N = Russell Hobbs, obv)

C J (C J), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that Ned 'Popeye' Raggett is a brilliant name? In a sort-of hairy porn star type way.

C J (C J), Friday, 11 July 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

That's a terrible thing to say about an impressionable five-year-old! *cries*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 July 2003 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

In eighth grade there was a girl in my school's music program that I was rivals with. I started taking lessons with a singing coach at a well-regarded local music school in the afternoons, but I didn't realize that my rival took lessons there too. On the first day the coach pulled out the sheet music for Irene Cara's "Out Here On My Own" (from Fame) and said "sing this." So I did; it wasn't part of my repertoire or anything and I didn't know it too well, but I could sightread OK and I followed along. Apparently this was her standard material for new students. Door to the practice room was open, and the rival singer chick heard me, barged in, saw me, barged out. Next day in school: WHY ARE YOU AT MY SCHOOL? WHY ARE YOU SINGING MY SONG? YOU'RE JEALOUS OF ME AREN'T YOU HAH I KNEW IT!

After that I quit and did my lessons somewhere else.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 11 July 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Ironically (maybe), "Out Here On My Own" is one of my favorite songs now.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 11 July 2003 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i have a lot of duplicate clothing with my best friend because we find stuff in stores we both like (once i copied her). so we used to walk into school a lot and be like "get out of my clothing, bitch." it's odd because these aren't the items of clothing everybody has, either, just stuff we have. i attempt to copy people's makeup a lot but it doesn't work, i am just hopeless with makeup.

also this is a little extreme but in sixth grade i had a king arthur obsession and always signed my papers as a knight.

Maria (Maria), Friday, 11 July 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Ironically (maybe), "Out Here On My Own" is one of my favorite songs now.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 11 July 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

also this is a little extreme but in sixth grade i had a king arthur obsession and always signed my papers as a knight.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 11 July 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, that is so high school, Horace.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 11 July 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, that is so high school, Horace.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 11 July 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I know you are but what am I?

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 11 July 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

That's just juvenile.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 11 July 2003 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

That's just juvenile.

Whore-ass Man (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 11 July 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

That's just juvenile.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 11 July 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I just saw a license plate on a Camaro that said "JEL BAR". They were copying you!!

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 11 July 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Now imagine the Electric 6 song being that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 July 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I shall take no part in these proceedings.

Just Juvenile (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 11 July 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I got something to put in ya! I got something to put in ya--at the JEL BAR JEL BAR JEL BAR! YEAH!

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 11 July 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm international! Wahoo!

jel -- (jel), Friday, 11 July 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope they were listening to "Talk Dirty To Me", that'd be pretty good.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 11 July 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

amateurist (amateurist), Friday, 11 July 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

A few years ago I started crossing my 7s in writing, because a co-worker of mine at the time did it and I decided I liked the way it looked. I still do it.

Also, I'm a bit ashamed to admit I've borrowed quite a few verbal tics from my favorite sports-talk radio host.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 11 July 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

YES!

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 11 July 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I started crossing my sevens after I went on a Youth Orchestra trip to Germany when I was 16, and decided I liked the German style of numerals better. I write my ones in a vaguely German way too.

caitlin (caitlin), Saturday, 12 July 2003 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

My signature is uncannily like my dad's

yes, me too - my Dad extends the downstroke on his first initial ('E') and writes it sloping forward and I do the same with my 'M'.

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 12 July 2003 09:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I copied the entire year of 1965

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 13 July 2003 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I stole my bassline from "Under Pressure."

(I also wear my watch on my right wrist and forget that right-handed people normally don't; it's easier to read the time while writing this way.)

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 13 July 2003 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i stole my look from jackie o, buttercup ppowerpuff, the queen mother and marc bolan.

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 13 July 2003 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

DaDa to thread!

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 13 July 2003 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

aren't we just composites of everything we've ever experienced? Everything I am is just peices of things I've come across at one point or another...i think. I am a bit obsessed with mr. currie..though i won't be wearing an eyepatch or carring a 'murse' anytime soon. ..and I did have the "Moz" haircut for a while...(dark days indeed Kenan). I've also been fantasizing about wearing the Avril Levine stripped sock-on-the-arm bit.
