are you nuts! get a TV!

Mr. Pibb, Friday, 11 July 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a TV, but I don't get any reception.
I just got a VCR though.
Yes, I have entered the 1980s.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 11 July 2003 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

when i was 19 or 20 our tv set got broken, and we decided not to buy a new one, being just my mom and me (my brother was studying away). then i left home and i couldn't afford a tv se anyway, and as years went by i kept on with the idea that i didn't need one.
now, 31, my family thought that a tv would be a good birthday present. the result: i've been stuck to the screen for the last 4 months, fascinated by the ads and stunned at the mongolic shows and contests...
of course i saw tv at friend's houses etc, it's not as if i had been in a desert island or anything, but this has been a new experience. and not a good one. fortunately i'm recovering from the first tv hangovers and now i can select and watch only what i'm interested in, instead of swallowing any dirty talk show until late night...
so, i'm one of you now, mr pibb :-/

joan vich (joan vich), Friday, 11 July 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

stunned at the mongolic shows and contests...
what part of Asia do you live in?

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 11 July 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i live east of the moon.
sorry for the misuse of the word mongolic, didn't mean to annoy anyone.

joan vich (joan vich), Friday, 11 July 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not even sure what you meant by it.
Part of me was hoping you were watching bizarro cooking shows from Ulaanbaatar (CIA spelling).

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 11 July 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

i meant to say abnormal or plain stupid. that's why i'm always worried to write longer posts, i'm not sure i can explain myself in english...
anyway, bizarro cooking shows would be ok in my book, i'd surely love them.
actually, the tv show i liked the most (which horrorized all of my friends) was the one called 'hotel glamour', where 10 sort-of celebrities (but no one really worth it or well-known) stayed in a house as in big brother, each one trying to be cooler and more glamorous than the others. it was so dumb it got me stuck on the screen every week.

joan vich (joan vich), Friday, 11 July 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

No tv. Instead, I buy lots of books & CDs, have internet access & a dog & a garden, paint, goof off. My friends all have TVs, so I can go watch stuff with them whenever I want.

lyra (lyra), Friday, 11 July 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

chaki (chaki), Friday, 11 July 2003 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I seem to only watch Comedy Central and MTV 2 these days. And although I got a DVD player for Christmas, apparently I can't be bothered to hook it up. So my TV-watching would seem to be characterized by intense stupidity.

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 11 July 2003 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't have a tv for 3 years. It was fine but I managed to waste all my time with other shit anyway. it's not like by removing it your life immediately becomes this ordered, trash-free thing.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Friday, 11 July 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

We got rid of our tv a few years ago. We were getting sick of it anyway, but what pushed us over the edge was they showed that film of the wedding party in israel where the floor collapsed, and a bunch of people got killed. It was the fact that it wasn't the story that was "newsworthy", it was the fact they had this amazing footage blah blagh blah. It made me feel a little sick, and as it turned out, so did jill, 'coz she suggested that very night that we shd get rid of it, and i was like my thoughts eactly. I honestly have never missed it, all i ever watched was top of the pops, and the trashy softcore films they show on ch5 anyway, neither of which i miss really. Several health & education professionals have told us that our son's autism wd have been diagnosed much later, if we'd kept it, so i suppose it was a good move. ILX totally fukcing owns tv, anyway.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 11 July 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

You were jealous last night when I was watching The Island Of Dr Moreau, though.

Okay, you weren't.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 11 July 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

The only TV I own is a small 13" model I've owned for years (it is color though!). I only watch sports and the Food Network, but I wouldn't want to get rid of it. Agreed ILx is a much better diversion.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 11 July 2003 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

was it any good, martin?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 11 July 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I gave up on it after a bit. You didn't miss much.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 11 July 2003 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got a 27" TV with TiVO. Lately it stays off unless I'm watching TiVOed Dawson's Creek episodes or have a DVD in.

I tried to buy a 30" widescreen HDTV last week, but it had a terrible picture and discoloration, and I can't afford to buy one new-in-box.

I really want a 16x9 TV, 'cuz 2.35:1 movies look really tiny on my TV. Watching The Good, The Bad and the Ugly and A Fistful of Dollars on my old man's 46" widescreen was a near-religious experience.

But after I get the Creek fetish out of my system, I suspect I can sell off my TiVO and satellite receiver.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 11 July 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

TV is more interesting when you don't own one, I think.

Chris P (Chris P), Friday, 11 July 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I really want one of those flat jobbers you hang on the wall, 16x9 ratio, hd and all that. I have to keep up with TV for my job so I might get rid of it if I wasn't in that situation, but the b/f is a TV junkie so that won't happen anyway. So as it is I love gadgets and want the most awesome TV ever. If I had a kid I'd really want to padlock the TV in a cabinet though.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 11 July 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)
