haven't read the wall street journal or NYT reviews yet but the tabs are having a field day. the new york post and daily news reviews were pretty bloody, but the philly paper takes the cake.

do american daily papers really use the word "dude" now?

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 12 July 2003 05:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, totally. (I didn't want to see the movie until I read that review. shit.)

You know it's funny that review does bring up a good point--it really bugged me in the trailers that many of the shots focused on the characters driving around in their cars and firing machine guns. way to fucking cancel out the movie's big novelty!

and why don't they introduce the characters in the trailer? it's all "we need a super-team, the super-est team ever!" and you see quick shots of everyone but I can't imagine anyone who doesn't already know a thing or two about the movie would have any idea who they are.

you know what I'm saying?

Holy crap, dude, it's like that Philly guy didn't realize the movie took place AT THE TURN OF THE 20TH FUCKING CENTURY. Like, whoa.

And, really, it's not as bad as 90% of the folks out there make it out to be. Then again, 1) it's nothing like the Moore / O'Neill book (though the guy that wrote _Starman_ & _The Golden Age_ - James Robinson - wrote the script! there's a selling point!) and 2) people might have problems w/ the science or plot logic employed (silly comic books) and 3) for the love of guh, would someone like to tell the director to shoot a fight scene straight w/out all the edgy jittery camera movement (sheesh, it's like they're trying to hide bad CGI or crappy choreography) (as if Sean Connery in a fist fight or shoot out could ever look bad).

I think this is going to be dreadful. I feel disloyal not going to see films based on the work of old pals (sort of includes Kev, certainly includes Alan, as it did for both creators of From Hell, which I didn't go to see anyway), but I doubt I'll bother.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 12 July 2003 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

The reviews down here haven't been brutal at all. Basically "it's mediocre, go see Pirates of the Caribbean instead."

yeah, the ny post review is just as bad. The NY Times dismissed it in the first sentence and then just recapped the plot.

scott seward, Saturday, 12 July 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

It's really not THAT bad of a movie. The exposition, especially introducing the characters to each other, is clunky. The end of the first act is slow and sludgy, and the middle takes too long to start up. But beyond that, it lives up to the trailers, for better and worse. It would've been worth the price of a rental.

(Good points -- Peta Wilson and the guys who play Jekyll and the Invisible Man; Stuart Townsend is convincing as Dorian Gray, and yet I'm still not sure if he can act or not; lots of nice little moments here and there, especially in the corners of the frame.)

(As for the comic -- I haven't read it, but my girlfriend is a huge Alan Moore fan. She says it changes a lot plot-wise from the comic but is faithful to the ideas and concepts, and that the characters are largely the same although maybe "simplified" a little for reasons of time. There are scenes and panels from the comics which are plonked right into the movie.)

I would never have guessed this was from the director of Blade. It doesn't have his pacing at all.

(Oh, it maybe should be said: I watch lots of movies, so something that's "worth the price of a rental" for me might not be worth seeing at all for someone who only watches a couple movies a month.)

Tep (ktepi), Saturday, 12 July 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

(Apparently "changes a lot plot-wise" doesn't mean "uses an entirely different plot" but rather "compresses things and changes some things here and there.")

The guy from the Wall Street Journal loved it. I am detecting a very strong anti-victorian-era-superhero vibe from the new york and philly tabloids.

scott seward, Saturday, 12 July 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

goddamn, that review IS hilarious. Thanks, Scott!!
