Carrying Drinks

OK: so you're in a pub or bar and you've just got a big round. How many drinks do you attempt to carry at once?

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 12 July 2003 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I can generally manage three pints in a clover-leaf fashion if there are no (or not many) steps to negotiate and the glasses are all the same shape. Yesterday I bought 3 pints; two of London Pride bitter and one of Stella and was cursing myself when the barmaid served me coz i hadn't the foresight (or gall) to request the Stella in the same shaped glass as the Pride - she served it in one of those taller pint glasses with the Stella logo engraved in it, so I didn't attempt the clover-leaf and made 2 trips.

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 12 July 2003 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I generally ask for a tray:)

C J (C J), Saturday, 12 July 2003 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Taller glass = narrower = easier to cary, surely?

Only mentalists try four at the same time. Ken C to thread?

Mark C (Mark C), Saturday, 12 July 2003 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

DUDE STOP SPILLING BEER ON THE MERCH!

that is all.

hstencil, Saturday, 12 July 2003 09:33 (twenty-two years ago)

ha, the interesting thing was later the same evening I ordered a pint of Pride and two cranberry J2Os, which the barman served in glasses and even tho the J2O glasses were obviously smaller and a different shape and i was in a different pub with lots of steps to negotiate, I carried the 3 drinks in the clover-leaf (successfully, although it was touch-and-go at one point). So, drinking obv. makes me braver when it comes to drink-carrying (whilst making my co-ordination worse at the same time, obv.)

MarkH (MarkH), Saturday, 12 July 2003 09:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I know someone who when asked "would you like a tray?" would always reply, "No I've got enough to carry as it is, without a tray as well!"

I can carry four pints at once (esp. if the glasses all match). I do spill a little bit, but not so that people would complain.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 12 July 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Or highly skilled professional barmen, five actually, if needs must but our pnt glasses are straight sided and thus easier to carry. Yer standard pub pint I wouldn't normally attempt more than four, and that is with the caveat that N emphasises.

Matt (Matt), Saturday, 12 July 2003 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

highly skilled professional barmen

only a few moments ago I saw a waiter drop a whole glass of beer from his tray as he tripped over a chair. So carrying it on a tray is not always without risk too. BEing a professional neither.

Erik, Saturday, 12 July 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

5? Explain the mechanics?

Mark C (Mark C), Saturday, 12 July 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I dumped an entire tray of margaritas on a table once, getting tripped up by some little brat running around the floor. Soaked two teen-ish girls and banged up my bad knee, so I've been wary of trays every since. I can carry four or five drinks at once, depending on size, or one martini glass very slowly.

How do you keep from sloshing martinis around?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Saturday, 12 July 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

You put a beer mat on top of the glass, and balance another glass on top. Once you've completed the pile, you hold the top and bottom ones, obviously. You can carry fice or six that way. Trust me.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 12 July 2003 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Trust me unless any of the drinks are for me or I'm paying, I meant to say.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 12 July 2003 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

the classiest move i've seen is carrying 3 pint glasses CLUMSILY through a crowded dance floor to your mates at the front who will dance while spilling booze on others footwear. smoove!

bob snoom, Saturday, 12 July 2003 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

If you're all wasted and your hands are clean you can discreetly hold three or four in each hand by pinching the rims together from the inside; that is, just stick your fingers right in the beer.

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 12 July 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, there's always that option but it's frowned upon.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 12 July 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

by whom? the people I'm buying drinks for?

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 12 July 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Probably.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 12 July 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

more for me then.

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 12 July 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

They'll still drink it - they'll just hate you.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 12 July 2003 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

bring it.

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 12 July 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

They'll do worse when it's their turn.

nickn (nickn), Saturday, 12 July 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Another thing I sometimes do is put drinks in my pockets.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 12 July 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you wear one of those poacher's coats with huge deep pockets, N? I bet you could get ten pints of bitter at a time in those, though I daresay the ensuing beer spillage might make it look as though you were suffering slightly from urinary incontinence.

C J (C J), Saturday, 12 July 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

This woman to thread!

Waterproof pockets!

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 12 July 2003 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

She has the huge amount of head though, which sadly you don't get on a decent martini.

Mark C (Mark C), Saturday, 12 July 2003 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

True, plus martini glasses don't have handles.

5? Explain the mechanics?

With straight sided glasses it's relatively easy to load one hand with three (two on the main body of the palm and one braced by the middle finger) before picking up the other two in the other hand, one between thumb and index finger, the other between index and middle. 5's nothing, I've worked with guys who can carry 8 or 9 balanced up their arms. It's a matter of confidence. Also I have seen more drinks spilt by customers "helpfully" removing one from a loaded tray than by any other method.
N.B. If your waitress/er should spill drinks, or break glasses please do not cheer or shout witticisms along the lines of "sack the juggler." It makes us angry. And you won't like us when we're angry.

Matt (Matt), Saturday, 12 July 2003 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

a few days ago I saw someone carrying two pints and two halves in a (to me) unique fashion. He was holding a pint in each hand with the a half above each pint, with some fingers of each hand holding the top of the pint and other fingers holding the bottom of each half, with his thumbs for support.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 14 July 2003 07:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I really really struggle to do even three, my tiny fingers and wholesale clumsiness make sure something goes wrong, like on Friday, when I actually managed to carry three pints from the bar to the bench we were sat at. I got to Jonnie, told him to take one quick, he said he had two, I got which two wrong and saw a whiole pint sail to the floor, covering Jonnie's trousers, sprinkling myself but amazingly the glass didn't break. It all seemd to happen in slow motion, and I was mortified.

chris (chris), Monday, 14 July 2003 07:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Another thing I sometimes do is put drinks in my pockets.

this reminds me of myles na gcopaleen's trouser invention, whereby you have a waterproof pocket on each leg going all the way to the ground. you can carry 4 bottles of stout in each leg and if you fall over and the bottles break the waterproof pockets ensure none is lost.

angela (angela), Monday, 14 July 2003 09:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I can do 5 at once but not advisable when I am quite drunk, which is generally the state I am in once I am buying huge massive rounds. So I usually don't do more than 4 at once. However if everyone buys bottled beers I can carry well more than 5!

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 14 July 2003 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I can carry ten bottled beers with no sweat. Since I never buy more than three drinks at a time in a bar, however, I've never had to worry. In college I used to have a coat that could hold 5 beers and I used to be able to fit whole 32oz bottles into my pants pockets. This was very handy as we all lived on a dry campus.

Millar (Millar), Monday, 14 July 2003 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I can carry up to 7 martini glasses on a large tray at once, without spilling a drop.

phil-two (phil-two), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)
