High-speed internet access - classic or classic?

Yeah, you're looking at about $50 a month. But come on mow. Why wouldn't you have high-speed access?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 13 July 2003 01:01 (twenty-two years ago)

mow = now

Although "come on mow" has a nice ring to it. I smell a dance craze.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Sunday, 13 July 2003 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Q: Why wouldn't you have high-speed access?

A: Yeah, you're looking at about $50 a month.

amateurist (amateurist), Sunday, 13 July 2003 01:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't have it until I moved here. Dial-up was free through school. The difference between free and $50 (actually it's $35 for me, but only because I have digital cable as well) is a lot more than the difference between $20 and $50. And not just mathematically. (Not to mention the cost of a cable modem, router, and so forth.)

This is the first time I've paid for strictly-internet service (I paid for AOL back in the day). Had to do it -- couldn't get access through new school because I won't be officially in the program until the fall, and needed email for work. I figured, what the fuck, if I have to pay anyway, I may as well go with a cable modem.

Having it now ... yeah, it's cool. It's odd, though -- sometimes web pages will still be just as slow to load, no matter how much I kick things.

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 13 July 2003 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

"...sometimes web pages will still be just as slow to load, no matter how much I kick things."

This is the nature of the internet. If there's a bottleneck anywhere, shit slows down.

Andrew (enneff), Sunday, 13 July 2003 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I know, it's just ... there's this illusion, in most circumstances, of speedy speedy McSpeed, and then every once in awhile my hare goes all tortoise on me. (ILX seems exactly the same, speed-wise, because I used to have images turned off. So it's the same speed, but people make more sense now. I don't know if that's good.)

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 13 July 2003 03:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i need it more than TV

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 13 July 2003 10:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I definately need broadband more than TV. That said, I don't need TV very much at all so it's no big deal. I recently lived for 6 months without any internet at home, and it didn't bother me much at all.

Andrew (enneff), Sunday, 13 July 2003 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I know exactly what Tep is saying about the difference between $0 and $50 vs. the difference between $20 and $50. I've always had dialup free through work but now my b/f wants broadband. He's got some good reasons but I'm such a tightwad. I'm trying to get him to give up a phone line altogether and just use our cell phones since all we get on the land line is telemarketer calls but he's not so keen on that idea.

One big benefit to gadget-lovin' me if we get broadband: wireless network. This may lead to us getting another TiVo and using their home networking option where the TiVos talk to each other and share programs. They'll also talk to our computers and access our mp3s so that we can play them over our big stereo system.

Oh god, I've almost talked myself into it. This won't be expensive at all, oh no....

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 13 July 2003 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got 6 albums queued up right now. A month ago I woulda been waiting a half hour for one tune. Of course, it's classic!

Michael B, Sunday, 13 July 2003 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Broadband, either cable or DSL -- so utterly classic it hurts. Worth every penny.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 13 July 2003 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm, I kinda like the slow old 56k dial-up.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 13 July 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

$24.95 CDN a month...Eat my dust!!

I'm pretty sure that the linksys brand name is being discontinued by cisco. Perhaps because it is synonymous with "suckage."

I lease the modem from Comcast so I'm not stuck with a cable modem when I might not need one down the line. I might change my mind and switch to some other company that is dsl instead. Also since in my experience, your average cable modem breaks every two years, you end up about breaking even. Our cable modem died in the first 6 months and all we had to do was call them up and get a new one.

I hate to say it because it's more expensive than it need be, but my airport express is the most reliable wireless router I've ever owned. And you can stream music to it. Have it hooked up to the stereo in the living room and stream music off multiple 'puters in the house. Good times.

I like D-Link!

my linksys router doesn't give me any trouble. It is what it is.

and what it is is cheap.

one year passes...

if i'm not doing hardcore filesharing and we only have 2 laptops browsing the internet at any time, is there any good reason to go for 20 mbps internet as opposed to 10 mbps?

moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 20 December 2008 23:51 (seventeen years ago)

no

Jarlrmai, Sunday, 21 December 2008 00:50 (seventeen years ago)

no

WmC, Sunday, 21 December 2008 01:06 (seventeen years ago)

how long until i *will* need 20 mbps for browsing and watching videos?

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 21 December 2008 02:00 (seventeen years ago)

trying to figure out which uverse package to get?

өөө (Pleasant Plains), Sunday, 21 December 2008 05:32 (seventeen years ago)

LOL correct.

actually, we just got the uverse installed yesterday. we got the U200 cable + HD channels and the 10 mbps internet. i'm disappointed that even though this thing supports 1080i HD i can't actually find any 1080i programming to watch (also i don't own a blu-ray player because i can't make up my mind to buy a ps3 since i don't really like video games) ... and also that we get like 5 reggaeton video stations but no mtv jams or BET music videos or vh1 soul.

i'm not sure whether the internet is any slower than our previous provider (which was also 10 mbps) or whether it's my imagination. it does seem like the browser takes longer to think and then loads everything all at once as opposed to before when it would load everything incrementally. i'm not much of a tech guy but i have the feeling that's my imagination and if there were anything going on like that it'd have nothing to do with my ISP and more to do with the browser and the sites i was visiting.

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 21 December 2008 22:21 (seventeen years ago)

also the cable box is much, much quicker than the last one and there doesn't seem to be *any* lag at all when i'm flipping channels, as opposed to the last box that seemed to take like a whole second between each channel ... but then there are these huge gaps of like 100 empty soccer channels that i have to flip through to get to a channel that i actually *do* receive. why couldn't they just set up the programming packages in blocks? why do i have to flip through 500 empty channels to get to the HD channels?

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 21 December 2008 22:24 (seventeen years ago)

bump?

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 02:02 (seventeen years ago)

We've been debating getting Uverse too, and I can't tell what we need and what we don't need.

Sunny does some pretty intense work for her job at home, so it's not something we're just going to jump into and find out. But the sooner I come up with a reason to shove this cable box up the ass of Comcast, I'll be happier.

өөө (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 23 December 2008 04:59 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, you'll have to look at the pricing. we had a door-to-door guy come around and for us the big deal was that we would be getting everything we got with our old provider for less than the introductory rate with the other provider (which was set to go up like $30/month after the first six). and we got like $200 cash back for buying all three services at the same time. that and our cable box was shitty and would lose signal and get all scrambled all the time. you'll have to do your own research since i have no idea how much your cable + phone + internet costs right now but in our case it was extremely competitive.

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 05:07 (seventeen years ago)

basically the sense i got from the sales pitch and the price sheet was that at&t was making so much money off wireless and and the size of their customer base was going to be so big that they could basically afford to undercut the local cable. it was sort of ridiculous and hard to believe how much better the pricing was. but there you have it. i guess when you spend x amount of money wiring the entire neighborhood with brand-new fiber optic cable it doesn't do to not have subscribers?

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 05:09 (seventeen years ago)

i keep thinking "what's the catch?"

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 05:10 (seventeen years ago)

I have heard nothing but good things about it, and yes, that scares me a little.

өөө (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 23 December 2008 05:26 (seventeen years ago)

actually though, to put it in a broader perspective, i guess i am the sort of consumer they are all fighting over. i'm paying for cable + cable upgrade + HD cable + DVR + phone + national LD + internet + internet upgrade + two iphones. i imagine that if you were just shopping for, i dunno, no frills basic cable + local calling + internet just for emailing then at&t suddenly might not seem so "competitive" any more.

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 05:40 (seventeen years ago)

i mean, maybe the whole strategy is to up-sell all of this newfangled shit to consumers who aren't really sure whether they need fast internet or 9 million channels or 1080i HD, so they're offering these services at prices that seem silly low to people who are already in the market for that stuff.

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 23 December 2008 05:42 (seventeen years ago)

i went with a uverse bundle this year. it's cool, cheaper than the shitty monopolistic local cable co. digging the dvr, don't know how i ever lived w/o it

pro-sumer (tremendoid), Tuesday, 23 December 2008 06:39 (seventeen years ago)

two years pass...

bump

I'm thinking about ditching cable TV and Internet for a U-verse package ... is it worth it? I already have AT&T landline service.
