im here for four days and i want to do it right

ilx search only turns up soccer threads and various anti-bavarian propaganda

the deutsches museum and dachau seem like givens -- but after that?

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 13 July 2003 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I think there's supposed to be a park where all the hot german bankers go to sunbathe nude in the summer during their lunchbreaks. I'm planning my next trip to Europe around it.

phil-two (phil-two), Sunday, 13 July 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

There are the neue and alte pinacoteche. Two of the most important galleries in the world.

Ed (dali), Sunday, 13 July 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

From what I'm told the Kunstpark Ost (Grafingerstrasse 6) used to be v good but is a mere shadow of itself now.

Sommermute (Wintermute), Sunday, 13 July 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

also: pls teach me some USEFUL german

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 13 July 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Ich mochte ein auto meiten.
Zwei Bier, bitte.
Einmal bratwurst mit brötchen/kartofelpuffe, bitte.

Ed (dali), Sunday, 13 July 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

'Ein Helles, bitte' will get you a light beer &

'Ein Dunk'les, bitte' will get you a dark one.

Alte Pinakothek made me yawn, check the opening times for the Neue Pinakothek (it was closed all day the first time I went there) & that all the galleries containing stuff you want to see are actually accessible.

Phil's park = Englischer Garten, no nekkid anybody, let alone hot, when I went :(

Deutsches Museum has good planes.

If time permits, get out of the city & see a couple of Ludwig's castles, there are day trips on coaches to Neuschwanstein & Linderhof, for example.

I hope you like meat.

Mooro (Mooro), Sunday, 13 July 2003 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

There must be a train museum somewhere round there.

Ed (dali), Sunday, 13 July 2003 20:05 (twenty-two years ago)

There are several trains in the Deutsches Museum, (but they may be in the process of moving to the Theresienhöhe - so again, check first)

Mooro (Mooro), Sunday, 13 July 2003 20:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I would love to go to Munich. If I went there I would drink foaming tankards of German beer and eat wurst while accompanied by an oompah band.

Burr burr burr.

DV (dirtyvicar), Sunday, 13 July 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Ryanair Dublin to Stansted, Easyjet Stansted to Munich?

Mooro (Mooro), Sunday, 13 July 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

cheaper by proper plain and no 3 hours in stanstead.

Ed (dali), Sunday, 13 July 2003 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

sadly while I would love to go to Munich, I would love to go to Berlin a lot more, so I think that will be my autumn German vacation.

burr burr burr.

DV (dirtyvicar), Sunday, 13 July 2003 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

3 hours in stanstead

No problem, I would go & swap sacristy gossip with DV while he was waiting.

Mooro (Mooro), Sunday, 13 July 2003 21:21 (twenty-two years ago)

just one thing to tell about munich: don`t go there.

Katja (blue), Monday, 14 July 2003 06:36 (twenty-two years ago)

:(

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 14 July 2003 07:51 (twenty-two years ago)

you`d better go to hamburg. :-)

Katja (blue), Monday, 14 July 2003 07:58 (twenty-two years ago)

well the last time I was in Germany I went to Hamburg *and* Munich and I have to say I prefer Munich - better food, better beer and many more old buildings. Hamburg has very few old buildings on account of two disastrous fires and the RAF.

MarkH (MarkH), Monday, 14 July 2003 08:29 (twenty-two years ago)

well, i went to a nudist´s colony

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 14 July 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Hamburg has very few old buildings on account of two disastrous fires and the RAF.

Royal Air Force or Rote Armee Fraktion?

Besides, Freiburg has the sunniest summers, lots of old buildings, good Swiss weed, decent beer, and a pissoir in every street - everything you could wish for. And it's not too far from Munich.

one year passes...

moving to this town tomorrow morning

caek, Monday, 28 September 2009 22:44 (sixteen years ago)

great town. annoying opening hours, but otherwise v. cool.

crazy weather so far though. last week it was 20° C, tomorrow it's apparently going to snow. i am going to learn to ski this winter.

caek, Monday, 12 October 2009 19:05 (sixteen years ago)

Used to live there when I was a teenager. Whereabouts are you caek?

Obscured by clowns (NickB), Monday, 12 October 2009 19:24 (sixteen years ago)

work is in garching but living at karl-preis-platz (~1km from ostbahnhof)

caek, Monday, 12 October 2009 19:26 (sixteen years ago)

on thursday i have to go and have a medical with a german doctor, which is basically the most terrifying sentence i have ever written.

caek, Monday, 12 October 2009 19:27 (sixteen years ago)

I had a good time there. My colleagues there kept saying how Munich was like the Italy of Germany or something like that, and taking me to Italian restaurants near the university. I kept saying "let's get some Bavarian food" and finally they said, "go by yourself, then". So I did, at some place with heavy shadows (in the relatively recent past). They had good beer and great DUMPLINGS!. It seemed like a very well-kept city, and when I went out wandering at night (say, 10 PM) the streets were exceedingly quiet, even in the university district where I was staying. The art museums were nice, esp. the modern one. I'd like to come back with my family and go to the big science museum.

xp I have to do that with a French doctor, which wouldn't be so terrifying if we could get someone in the bureaucracy here to tell us how to arrange this so that it counts for our residence permit.

Euler, Monday, 12 October 2009 19:32 (sixteen years ago)

Hmmm, all I remeber about Ostbahnhof was that it was good for buying the Melody Maker each week.

Dunno about Garching, but the best thing about the countryside round Munich was riding out to some of the swimming lakes in the summer, so great. Skiing was damn good too though.

Obscured by clowns (NickB), Monday, 12 October 2009 19:34 (sixteen years ago)

Oh wow that's awesome. Have never taken the U-bahn before. I want to go back! I haven't been there since I was a kid really.

t(o_o)t (ENBB), Sunday, 24 January 2010 16:01 (sixteen years ago)

i love the u-bahn because you can use your laptop without worrying about getting a little bit stabbed.

(and you can fall asleep on it in and not get stabbed.)

caek, Sunday, 24 January 2010 16:06 (sixteen years ago)

wait, what time you get on the u-bahn?

jed_, Sunday, 24 January 2010 16:08 (sixteen years ago)

(i just did my own pet hate by starting a post with "wait,")

jed_, Sunday, 24 January 2010 16:09 (sixteen years ago)

what time did i get it on friday/saturday night? like 6-7am saturday morning i think.

caek, Sunday, 24 January 2010 16:09 (sixteen years ago)

ah right, i thought you meant were on it all night shuttling back and forth.

jed_, Sunday, 24 January 2010 16:15 (sixteen years ago)

GANG - will be in Munch @ the Westin Grand for 3 days & 3 nights for work. Ill have all nights and maybe 1.5 days free. Things to do? I am not going to want to do anything involving the Holocaust. Is it a walking city? Public transit? I was looking at the bike rental thing but COLD. Very into old buildings/Europe. Also RFI specific beirs to sample. So many beirs. Xo

Guy was knee-deep in water (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Saturday, 9 February 2013 00:13 (thirteen years ago)

If you have any interest in cars or motor sports, the BMW museum is AWESOME!!

Sleep Deprivation Thriver (B.L.A.M.), Saturday, 9 February 2013 00:16 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, BMW Welt is cool. Not far from there are the Olympic grounds which are kind of spectacular IMO, and you can also take a ride to the top of the olympic tower for a sweet view (maybe less exciting in the winter).

City center is very walkable although bigger than it looks on a map. Public transit is great. Beers/food: everybody always does the Hofbräuhaus but the one Bavarian of my acquaintance, a seasoned and brilliant bus driver, insists this is for tourists and always takes us instead to the Augustiner Keller. (They have a biergarten version just outside of the historic center but in the winter, stick with the restaurant version. Food's yummy IIRC.)

I'm less devoted to pre-modern architecture but Munich does have some good stuff, poke around on Wikipedia. The Asamkirche is my favorite for Rococo excess crammed into a pretty narrow site. When I helped chaperone trips we would always do the Nymphenburg (big palace, short jaunt from the city center) but the main attraction is the rambling garden and its pavilions - again probably not so fun in winter. The in-city palace (the Residenz) might be worth a tour if you do dig the old buildings, I think there's some nice rooms, a great court theater and so on - but I've never done it myself. For 19th century Romantic Classicism there's Königsplatz (the Glyptothek actually has a couple of famous Greco-Roman sculptures). The Neue Pinakothek has solid pre-war modern painting, post-war installation art and such, and a really good design exhibit if you want to see old computers and chairs and telephones and things like that.

The absolute #1 thing to do in Munich IMO is watch people surfing in the Eisbach, a spot where a buried water channel comes tumbling into the English Garden. Unfortunately I'm prettttty sure that doesn't go on in February, nor will you want to jump in the water and let it sweep you away downstream which is a real blast. Still, if the weather's unseasonably mild you might check out the park, with the caveat that it is vast and you will not want to try to see more than 1/10th of it. It's just a hell of a civic amenity.

probably more than you needed to know, sorry! sharing for posterity.

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 9 February 2013 03:57 (thirteen years ago)

ich wohne in muenchen. dr casino has good stuff. hofbräuhaus is terrible, yes. when exactly are you in town? i might be able to suggest specific events (e.g. starkbier season approaches.)

caek, Saturday, 9 February 2013 12:34 (thirteen years ago)

20-24 in the morning. I have sat Sunday free -- I saw Bayern Munich is at home. Is that a worthwhile cultural thing or 4 hrs in the cold? Was planning on at least getting _A_ beer @ hofbrauhaus "because." I have no shame wrt the touristy stuff.

Wrt public transit is there a weekly/daily pass thing in the Metrocard vein?

Guy was knee-deep in water (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Saturday, 9 February 2013 14:12 (thirteen years ago)

yeah hofbräu is worth 1 (one) visit. if you can get a ticket for a reasonable price and you don't hate football then bayern is definitely worth it. drink bottles of augustinerbrau on the way. have fun. augustiner is the the munich beer. there are not that many other *munich* beers: paulaner, lowenbrau, spatenbrau, hofbrau and probably one other i'm forgetting. all of them have a "main" keller which is worth checking out. but really augustiner is imo the best, and certainly the most popular with locals. i only drink helles, the lager-like one, so my advice may not apply to the dunkels (dark) and certainly doesn't apply to weissbier. if you're a weissbier fan then check out http://www.weisses-brauhaus.de/ on tal, a couple of blocks from hofbrauhaus. unfortunately you're going to just miss the start of starkbierfest, which is march 1-17. it's kind of a distributed, less touristy oktoberfest with stronger beer (doppelbocks). the brews are different each year, so if you see any then give them a shot. they're usually about 8-9% (cf 5-6% for regular helles/dunkels). you can tell it's a stark bier because the name ends in -tor, e.g. salvator, triumphator, etc. they might be popping up by the time you arrive.

the englischergarten advice is spot on: surfing on the eisbach, chinese tower, etc.

http://www.mvv-muenchen.de/fileadmin/media/Dateien/0_Startseite/Endversion_MVV_Handout_fuer_Touristen_en_250113.pdf describes the 1 and 3 days u/s-bahn + bus tickets (page 3). are you arriving/leaving via the airport? if so the simplest thing to do is to buy a day pass for the entire network at the airport the day you arrive, a three day pass for the inner district (which includes the football stadium) for the middle three days, and a day pass for the entire network the day you leave. note also the partner versions of the day tickets, which are mad cheap if there are 2+ of you.

these day/3day passes will probably be cheaper and definitely simpler than the weekly passes, but if you decide to go for weekly, the football is in ring 4, the airport is in ring 16, and everything else is in rings 1, 2 and 3. the weekly passes can be a bit tricky to actually buy though. i'm not sure all the machines sell them, and you need a EC-Karte (german debit card) for those that do, so unless your host is local, they are probably more trouble than they're work.

personally i think the museum/gallery situation here is a bit disappointing. the deutsches museum is the massive science/tech museum. it's big, but it's a bit 70s imo. lots stuff in glass cases. to give them their credit though, best museum shop ever. there are three pinakotheks: alte (pre-1700ish), neue (1700-1900ish?) and moderne (20c). they are €1 to get in on sundays, bit expensive otherwise, and not terribly significant collections. haus der kunst is pretty good. http://www.munich.world-guides.com/munich_art_galleries.html. the rezidenz (palace) is supposedly barmily opulent and fun to check out. never bothered myself.

let me know if you want night life/eating recommendations. also if there is scope to leave town, e.g. both the alps (cable cars, toboganning, a mountain called "wank", even skiiing) and salzburg are nice day trips.

caek, Sunday, 10 February 2013 00:42 (thirteen years ago)

Fantastic! Honestly when I think of going to Germany these days I think of the Liz Lemon/Frankfurt gag and me being at the Deutsches Museum like

hey munich i'm gonna be up in you later this week!

i am staying on arnulfstraße

gonna read this thread, anybody got any new recs for restaurants / things to do after 5pm? caek are you there?

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Monday, 23 October 2017 21:32 (eight years ago)

if you're on arnulfstr then you're in walking distance of the augustiner keller and restuarant, i.e. the flagship locations of the best beer in munich.

if you have a day off and the weather is ok then go to andechs monastery, where carl orff is buried. nice walk up from the s-bahn (https://wikitravel.org/en/Andechs?title=Andechs), and they brew what some beer nerds think is the best beer in the world.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Monday, 23 October 2017 22:42 (eight years ago)

lest anyone think caek is ignoring my question about his whereabouts he has informed me via other channels that he no longer resides in "the nich" as i am not actually calling it, that would be awful

i do not like this place at all but i’m probably here in the wrong season and neighborhood or something. significant downgrade in overall experience from berlin, more expensive than vienna for some reason? surprisingly flat and miserably overcrowded (again, wrong season/area prob)

the few times my mom and i managed to work ourselves into a quieter spot (which only happened bc it was raining or about to rain afaict) it started to charm me… people hanging on the spires of a walking bridge drinking wine as the sun set. also glimpsed the surfing situation in the eisbach, dope

still appreciating this thread for the deep reliable recs tho

A livable city; idk what it does as a tourist tho (having been a tourist there)

Its big ball chunky time (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Saturday, 2 July 2022 17:20 (three years ago)

I worked there for a month or so as a consultant decades ago. I really liked being there, mostly, except for weird food and bad service in more restaurants than I’d care to mention. Let’s see, what did I do, besides go to Optimal and The Atomic Café? Hit the bookstores near the university on Theresienstrasse?

Build My Gallows Hi Hi Hi (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 2 July 2022 17:30 (three years ago)

Go to the cinematheque at the Film Archive! I remember one screening where the director figured me as a distributor or something and was oddly chatty.

the augustiner keller ended up being where my conference had scheduled its dinner btw. it was tremendous. the common tables are great. the large back hall with proscenium arch and actual oompah band was fucking hilarious, thought i was on candid camera or something.

clear to me that bavarians think of themselves as bavarians first and germans second, and furthermore that they think of themselves as basically better than other parts of germany. also absolutely wild levels of catholic conservatism. instruments could not record it. did not like these aspects tbh!
