Little things that make a big diffference

or alternately, Why Do People Use Those Things?

My parents were pretty frugal and we moved often, so there are a number of household objects I've never used. Sometimes I've purchased one of these items and it really had a good impact on my life, but most other times I came to the conclusion that my folks were right and most of these gadgets are a waste of money and space.

I'm not talking about stuff out of the Sharper Image catalog either. Some things that I have never used and have no desire to:
Salad Tongs
Blender
those little rubber spatulas you use to scrape out the last bit of cake batter
washcloths
ice cream scoop
spoon rest/trivet
ladle
pretty much any sort of specialized plate or utensil (shrip forks, olive plates, etc)

Lots of others I'm sure. I love looking at them in stores, I just would never buy them. I have also never used but am somewhat tempted to buy a food processor, and would have never gotten a colander or a pizza slicer if my b/f hadn't brought them to the household.

But I recently got a wine stopper, and it's so nice. I also would love a wine decanter. I also got a circular cheese grater that's very cool.

So what little purchases have really changed the way you go about things? Or what objects do you think are silly wastes of space?

Dada

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 13 July 2003 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

*awaits Dada pic with child-like glee*

stevem (blueski), Sunday, 13 July 2003 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, except for the blender -- I have a Cuisinart -- and the salad tongs, there's nothing on that list I don't use on at least a weekly basis.

Tep (ktepi), Sunday, 13 July 2003 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Blender
washcloths
ladle

I use these all the time.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 13 July 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark S to thread with his 0.0002p key hook tip.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 13 July 2003 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

One of the ladle-owners should use theirs to smack N.

estela (estela), Sunday, 13 July 2003 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

What did I do??

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 13 July 2003 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know.

estela (estela), Monday, 14 July 2003 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

OK yeah, bring on the ladles.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 14 July 2003 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

It's payback for what you did to me on Friday.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 14 July 2003 00:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry - typo. I meant 'ladies'.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 14 July 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

When is it ever a bad time to smack N.? It is always seems to be the just and sensible thing to do, the ladles would be a bonus.

Lars (Nicole), Monday, 14 July 2003 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

N. you'd better be wary of ladies bearing ladles.

estela (estela), Monday, 14 July 2003 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, some of us laddies with ladles aren't ladies.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 14 July 2003 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you eager to smack N. also?

estela (estela), Monday, 14 July 2003 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I'd at least like to be included in the wariness, y'know. I don't want to project this image of myself as some ladle-bearing guy you don't need to be wary of.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 14 July 2003 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I get this image of Tep being like the Punisher, only he's carrying a huge ladle.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 July 2003 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Daaamn right. "They killed my family. They killed my dog. They killed my second-grade teacher. And now. I make a gumbo. OF REVENGE."

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 14 July 2003 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Tep sounds ominous, easily as scary and frightening as a tropical storm called 'Bill'.

estela (estela), Monday, 14 July 2003 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn right.

... hey, hang on. I'm not sure that means what I want it to mean.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 14 July 2003 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't fret Tep, I'm sure everyone's absolutely terrified of you and your big ladle.

estela (estela), Monday, 14 July 2003 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

They better be, that's all I'm saying.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 14 July 2003 01:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Tep carries a Ladle of Fear. And he carries it well.

Lars (Nicole), Monday, 14 July 2003 01:10 (twenty-two years ago)

He should start a band called Ladle of Filth.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 14 July 2003 01:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Our signature song would go: "Ladle, ladle, ladle, I made you out of clay. Ladle, ladle, ladle, WITH LADLE I WILL SLAY."

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 14 July 2003 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

That sounds like a ladling-yodeling band.

Heavens! I just discovered that when I say ladling-yodeling-ladling-yodeling all of a sudden I can yodel even though ordinarily I can't:)

estela (estela), Monday, 14 July 2003 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

The hand that rawks the ladle is the hand that rules the world.

Lars (Nicole), Monday, 14 July 2003 01:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Lars Attacks!

estela (estela), Monday, 14 July 2003 01:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Everyone in the audience is gonna be waving ladles back and forth instead of Zippos. The Soup Nazi will open for us with his #1 smash hit, "No Soup (For You)." Kids'll start dangling mini-ladles from the belt-loops, rendering the chain-wallet fashion obsolete.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 14 July 2003 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

The hand that rawks the ladle is the hand that rules the world.

Climb up on my knee, Larsy boy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 July 2003 03:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah, now I see what I was missing without the ladles.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 14 July 2003 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

ANYWAYS...how do you make fruity frozen girly drinks without a blender?

NA. (Nick A.), Monday, 14 July 2003 12:20 (twenty-two years ago)

A) sharp knives
B) strong arms
C) patience

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 14 July 2003 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

we always wrapped ice cubes in a towel and hit them with hammers.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 14 July 2003 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

are washcloths the same things as face flannels? it seems like i'm the last person left in the world who uses a face flannel. whenever people are staying in the house they never use the flannel i leave with their towels. how do people wash without them? how do you get the soap, face stuff, etc, off properly?

angela (angela), Monday, 14 July 2003 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I use a flannel. Without one I have to bend right into the basin and get my hair all covered in soapy water.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 14 July 2003 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I am a flannel user too, but not for my face.

chris (chris), Monday, 14 July 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Pervert.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 14 July 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

A good flannel os perfect for exfoliating the arms and legs N, when combined with a scrub type shower gel.

chris (chris), Monday, 14 July 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, I thought you meant you wiped your arse with it

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 14 July 2003 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I just bought an ice cream scoop about a month ago. No more wiping my arse with the wash cloth!

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 14 July 2003 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

haha I thought Chris was talking about using the washcloth like this!

teeny (teeny), Monday, 14 July 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Angela, do you have soft water? Where I live (and most Londoners would agree, I think), the water is so hard that not only does the soap come off straight away but so does 75% of the moisture in your top 3 layers of skin.

Mark C (Mark C), Monday, 14 July 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

And the top 3 layers of skin with it.
