George Best back on the bottle

According to radio news the Brit press have reported that George is already pickling his new liver? kidney? 12 months after having it put in.

Predictable but still so, so sad.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Monday, 14 July 2003 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

was watching a News 24 report (well its such important topical news) on the matter yesterday afternoon when the reporter was outside the pub in question and two louts were behind him making faces and stuff - then as they moved off camera they started yelling "fuckin scumbuckets! he's done nothin wrong! its only mineral water!" so they cut quickly back to a squirming Peter Sissons in the studio.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 14 July 2003 10:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought this thread said "George Bush back on the bottle".

Leee (Leee), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

In which case I'd say that although, personally, I'd actually care exponentially less about the state of Bush's liver than Best's, the consequences for the world would be far more frightening.

Fred Nerk (Fred Nerk), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Not really. One big drunken press conference about now would go down really well.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
"George Best is seriously ill, but I can confirm that he is still alive."

Not for long, apparently.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Thursday, 27 October 2005 00:21 (twenty years ago)

BBC says it's not life threatening at the moment.

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 27 October 2005 06:18 (twenty years ago)

don't they?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 27 October 2005 06:28 (twenty years ago)

OK, well that was the Today programme at ten past eight. They seem to have revised it because just now they said doctors don't know what's wrong with him, Calum says it's "touch and go" and "looking bleak".

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 27 October 2005 06:30 (twenty years ago)

I saw the last point in This Much I Know in the paper at the weekend - that he's not afraid of dying - and said to boyf "looks like he won't be around much longer then".

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 27 October 2005 06:32 (twenty years ago)

ahahaha i hope the doctors ask for their liver back

in the state its in best aint getting his deposit back lolll

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!, Thursday, 27 October 2005 07:12 (twenty years ago)

A friend of mine who's a journalist told me he'd died and they were going to make an official statement later.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 27 October 2005 07:41 (twenty years ago)

PA says he's stable but critical. His Mr 15% says his condition is "as bad as it can get", altough unless he's dead this clearly isn't true.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Thursday, 27 October 2005 08:47 (twenty years ago)

someone else could've put that liver to good use. he should've died ages ago.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Thursday, 27 October 2005 09:09 (twenty years ago)

Sympathy to family etc. but this has been one of the least life-affirming and yet most tedious stories of the last decade.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 27 October 2005 09:11 (twenty years ago)

It's not quite Oliver Reed arm wrestling with sailors in a pub in Malta, is it, in terms of ways to go.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 27 October 2005 09:12 (twenty years ago)

it's not a competition.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 27 October 2005 10:42 (twenty years ago)

I didn't say it was. I'm thinking of the lion vs rabbit scenario again insofar as even if you decide to live a hellraising life there's a right and wrong way to do so, and GB's doing it the wrong way (or did it the wrong way if he's already gone).

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 27 October 2005 10:44 (twenty years ago)

i think he's a terminator.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 27 October 2005 10:46 (twenty years ago)

he'll be back then.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 27 October 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

four weeks pass...
Unlikely to survive beyond the next 24 hours

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 24 November 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

he'll pull through.

g-spot (g-kit), Thursday, 24 November 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

Uh, internal bleeding? I doubt it.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 24 November 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

really grim this media 'counting down' thing...

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 24 November 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

i doubt his metal endoskeleton is bothered by a few drops of blood.

g-spot (g-kit), Thursday, 24 November 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

is he dead yet?

hurry up george!

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!, Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

There's such a huge interest in Georges imminent death, quite unlike any other famous folk who've died.

They normally disappear, and the first thing you hear about them in years is "Such and such has died at home/in hospital after a long illness."

Is it 'cause we've had so many false alarms with Mr Best?

Rumpie, Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

_now_ I know who Esteban is, finally.

(x-post)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

What gave it away, Dom?

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

they should stop reporting about Best's condition until he's ever dead or made a miraculous recovery.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

_now_ I know who Esteban is, finally.

dommy p you might be a clever chap but you can never get this one right

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ~!!, Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

They did this with the Pope too. A couple million more people cared, though.

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

I hope he doesn't die this afternoon. I'm attempting to get through the Man Utd press office and it'll make my day absolutely impossible.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

Self inflicted, no sympathy. I’m sure there was someone more needy of a new liver that wouldn't of abused it.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

Family, prepare for worst.
Coroner, prepare for Best.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

Groan....

Rumpie, Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

actually goodwin, you won't find any mention anywhere in the media that his continued drinking explicitly caused this. that's because we don't and can't know.

sfxxx, Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

It's not his liver that's fucked, it's his lungs, I believe

Oh No, It's Dadaismus (and His Endless Stupid Jokes) (Dada), Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

Maybe it didn't cause it but it certainly wasn't wise to do it.

Rumpie, Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

Oh a little drink never did anyone any harm......

Oh No, It's Dadaismus (and His Endless Stupid Jokes) (Dada), Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

his liver is fucked, but transplant patients run the risk of this sort of thing happening for the rest of their lives, whether they drink or not. anyway, think about it - it took him 50 years of lunatic boozing to fuck up one liver. he'd have to go some to screw up a fresh, healthy one in 5 years.

sfxxx, Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

esteban is the pinefox?

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

After a transplant you take drugs that suppress your immune system so your body is less likely to reject the new organ. A side effect of this is you are less able to fight off infections.

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:46 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm, if it's his lungs then "What's yellow and runs on a 13 amp fuse" no longer makes sense.

Rumpie, Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

13 amp fuse??
it's a neural net processor. a learning computer.

g-spot (g-kit), Thursday, 24 November 2005 15:00 (twenty years ago)

Don't shook me - I'm just the messenger.

Rumpie, Thursday, 24 November 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

Don't shoot me - I'm just the messenger.

Rumpie, Thursday, 24 November 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

He's going out just as 24-hour drinking is coming in. Poor timing, mate.

just an ordinary girl who likes anal sex, Thursday, 24 November 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

g-spot (g-kit), Thursday, 24 November 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

UPDATE

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Thursday, 24 November 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

UPDATE: I know now why you cry. But it's something i can never do.

g-spot (g-kit), Thursday, 24 November 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

Come on folks, everytime I see new answers I think he's gubbed it.

Rumpie, Thursday, 24 November 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

THAT WAS THE FUNNY JOKE

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Thursday, 24 November 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

He can live 120 years on his existing power cell.

"Doctor, I sense injuries. The data could be called pain."

g-spot (g-kit), Thursday, 24 November 2005 16:53 (twenty years ago)

There's such a huge interest in Georges imminent death, quite unlike any other famous folk who've died.

They've got so much great footage of him ready to roll, and it's all in-house so it'll be at least several hours of low-cost programming! Yeah!

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Thursday, 24 November 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

He is human, for it is in our nature to destroy ourselves.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 24 November 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

is he dead yet? the evening standard pushed it a bit, basically declaring him dead ('george slips away').

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Friday, 25 November 2005 09:05 (twenty years ago)

The papers are doing much the same this morning.

Well, when he goes, they will just reprint todays tributes again.

(Hey, if he's a good boy, they could play him his TV obituary today!)

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 25 November 2005 09:15 (twenty years ago)

The Evening Times had "George Best 1946-2005" yesterday, which seemed a bit wrong.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 25 November 2005 09:53 (twenty years ago)

is he still alive? Not to be disrespectful, but I assumed he was dead from all the press coverage this morning.

Sophisticated Boom Boom (kate), Friday, 25 November 2005 09:54 (twenty years ago)

They're not expecting him to last beyond today, and obviously a lot of the papers thought he'd be gone by this morning.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Friday, 25 November 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

It is a bit weird to look at a row of papers all effectively claiming his death ("WE GOT THERE! WE SAID IT FIRST! IT WOZ US WOT WON IT")

tissp! (the impossible shortest specia), Friday, 25 November 2005 09:56 (twenty years ago)

Has the Vatican decided on a new George Best yet?

Alba (Alba), Friday, 25 November 2005 09:56 (twenty years ago)

He's still alive. Most of the papers are running with sort-of-obituaries. It's like they all reached the print deadline and thought "fuck it he's bound to be dead by the time these hit the shops."

xpost
Yes, very wrong.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 25 November 2005 09:56 (twenty years ago)

It's kinda weird that Best is dying around the same time that Maradona appears to have gotten his life completely back on track... Best always seemed comically screwed-up, and Maradona more tragically so...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 25 November 2005 10:01 (twenty years ago)

They're not expecting him to last beyond today, and obviously a lot of the papers thought he'd be gone by this morning.

-- accentmonkey (tris...), November 25th, 2005.

they thought he wouldn't last the evening, over at the standard.
