Should every pub have a dog?

you there being rude -stop it! Seriously, all the pubs I like best in Oxford have a dog. And it's always quite a big dog. An Alsatian or a golden retriever. Never a little yappy thing.

I was playing pool in a Cambridge Lesbian pub and they had a total of 4 dogs which made it in my opinion the best pub i have ever been in ever...plus they had rudey lady pictures behind the bar which just confirmed to me it was simply the best pub i have ever been in.

the phrase "a dog's life" takes on a new meaning in the case of pub dogs. They all get spoilt rotten! How they don't all end up chronically obese is a mystery.

The landlord at my local used to own a grebt big bulldog called Winston - now sadly deceased. We were in the pub one evening after landlord and the owner of a female bulldog had spent all day trying to get the two mutts to breed by leaving them alone together - so far without success. It seemed that Winston preferred an audience when gettin' his freak on as, once both dogs were in the crowded pub, he finally embarked on several awkward attempts to mount his new ladyfriend.

My pub has a brindled dog the same colour as the carpet and I keep stepping on him while playing pool. So I am against dogs in pubs.

Three years ago when doing the Green Lanes Pub Crawl (a thoroughly nasty affair) we walked into the Finsbury to narrowly avoid a huge pile of Jack Russell Terrier vomit which was happily sitting on the other side of the door waiting for people to stand in for the amusement of the pub regulars. Later, whilst drinking, said dog tried to come up and get frisky - and we got told of for shooing the vomit timebomb away.

There were no dogs in there on Saturday? Good boozer though, we were the only people in it for most of the time, and by the time my round came along the landlady knew it better than me, always a good sign I think.

In general, dogs in pubs should be discouraged if the pub sells food. Otherwise they are ace, unless there is leg-humping going on.

Cats in pubs are always cool though.

Dogs or cats in pubs totally rule! Pub cats are usually huge though & actually bruise your leg when they rub up against it!! Pub dogs are only a pain if you are eating & they sit at your table begging. Of course the chips that you have just given it are not an encouragement!

My local in my youth had a resident dog. It was the biggest and darkest alsatian I've ever seen, and was called Satan. To get to the toilets in the pub you had to go out back, across a little courtyard. When someone new was heading that way, we'd pause to listen. Barking, then a panic-stricken person rushing back into the pub. It was great fun. Satan was actually a pretty good natured dog who was never known to try to attack anyone.

three weeks pass...

There was a man who used to drink in a local pub in my home town who used to bring his Jack Russell into the pub. He used to smoke roll-ups, and when he'd finished them, he'd extinguish them with his fingers, then feed the remaining stub to the dog. I nearly chucked up. I remember thinking that it was a good thing he didn't use roaches, for some reason.

Dogs in pubs are generally OK with me as long as they are not massive beasties and they are soporific. A landlord with a big dog that prounces because it knows it is the king of the pub is not a good thing.

the forest gate used to have this massive labrador there on sundays and saturday, I guess one of the punters who liked to watch football owned him. he used to drool constantly, he'd wander around with his massive massive tongue out which was saturated with drool, I'm talking dripping like a tap here, and woe betide you if he licked your leg, as happened pretty much anyone I went there with at one time or another.

I used to work in a pub with a pub parrot. The landlord bought it as an Xmas present for his son and when it had reached a suitable age (god knows what constitutes a suitable age for a parrot to enter a bar) he would sometimes bring it down if it wasn't too busy (the pub, not the parrot) to sit behind the bar. The little fucker would peck at me every time I went out back to put glasses in the washer. And it never learnt to speak. useless.

That landlord's gone now. No-one is sorry. Except him, possibly.

The landlord of the pub in Garsington last night tells me that the previous tenants look after the pub when he's on holiday and they bring their dog (a black lab) with them. He then indicate the scratches on the bar from where the dog puts its feet on there when ppl feed it crisps.

two years pass...

the Fir Tree in Oxford has the largest complement of dogs I have seen in a single pub. There is a Border collie that likes to put its head against my leg. There is also a labrador and two other dogs of indeterminate breed. The smaller of which, Mollie, is quite young and frisky. Somewhere I have some pics of Mollie from when she was a puppy, curled up on the bar and in the barmaid's arms.
