If someone asked me to provide a character reference, what situation are they likely to be in, and what does providing one actually entail

Hmm.. it would be useful of them to tell you whether it was for a job or a court case. Or a potential date?

They left a message saying that they were in shit, so I guess its for a court case.

Nige, Monday, 14 July 2003 10:54 (twenty-two years ago)

oops!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Monday, 14 July 2003 10:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Well I guess you just say how long you've known them, in what context, and (if it's true) that they have always been reliable, law-abiding, honest etc. in their dealings with you.

I'd want to know exactly what for first!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 14 July 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Could be going for a job in MI5, MI6 or GCHQ.

Ed (dali), Monday, 14 July 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, MI5 tried to recruit me once. I was really scared.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 14 July 2003 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

mark s (mark s), Monday, 14 July 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Millar (Millar), Monday, 14 July 2003 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Just direct them to the nearest priest.

Lara (Lara), Monday, 14 July 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

If anyone works for MI6, can you put me in touch with Tara Chace?

Leee (Leee), Monday, 14 July 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Is she your secret crush?

Lara (Lara), Monday, 14 July 2003 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Mark, MI4 hasn't been operational since 1942, as you well know.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 14 July 2003 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, that's what they'd like you to think...

Lara (Lara), Monday, 14 July 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

That's the impression the nondescript building, and threadbare suits put out.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Monday, 14 July 2003 21:16 (twenty-two years ago)

though dressing up a whole building at all draws some attention.
