Well, I've watched Leprechaun I-IV, I pour Guiness into my Lucky Charms at breakfast, and I've been throwing rocks at anyone who walks past my apartment wearing orange. I'm all ready for my big trip to Ireland!

So what is there to do in Dublin? What should I put on my "must see" list?

Sengai, Monday, 14 July 2003 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

You really must take a trip to the Ballymun estates.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 14 July 2003 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Natural History Museum. It belongs in a museum itself.

tigerclawskank, Tuesday, 15 July 2003 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the Hugh Lane Gallery. the socialist realist painting of the Dockers is very nice. as is Les Parapluies by Renoir.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Now really attn: Dubliners. Can someone explain to me the strike action being taken by your public transport folks on Friday? Is it true that all transport will continue to run but no money will be taken? If so this is a great work of industrial action gennius.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

That's the, er, ticket.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

yep, free buses, trains and darts for all.

angela (angela), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 11:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this Friday only? Will Ireland go daytripping mad?

What's the dispute about?

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

proposed privatisation of public transport.

angela (angela), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Attn: Dubliners. You rock, HARD. Shame I only met two ILx types (Ronan and Lara... Ronan you left at the right time to avoid the disastrous but inevitable slide into ruination) but I just had a rollicking good weekend. Also: the COBRA and Christina Iglesias shows at IMMA are trivvic, as is the thing with the magnifying glasses int he project rooms or whatever they're called.

No ballerinas, TB or glassy marbles were involved and I'll sue anyone who says they were.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I so picked the wrong weekend to return to Navan.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a right weekend to return to navan?

angela (angela), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

AF yes you'd have had a right old laugh, sorry to have missed you (and all you other Dublin types obv) but maybe I'll be back.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe you'll be back?? Ha! You left your self respect in the Lord Edward and you're bound to need it sooner or later.

You really must take a trip to the Ballymun estates.

Don't you mean Ballymoooooon?

Lara (Lara), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
So I have a few days in Dublin this week. It's my first time here. I'm looking for any recommendations of things to do, perhaps not just the usual tourist places. Also, if any Dublin ILXors see this and would be interested in FAPing tomorrow evening or Saturday, please speak up here or in e-mail. The e-mail address is real and I will be checking it. Thanks!

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 19 August 2004 09:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i might be able to pop out for a quick pint if somethings happening on saturday. am workin til half 9 in stillorgan tomorrow so probably wont be out then.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 19 August 2004 09:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd be up for something on Saturday. I pretty much have the day clear for sightseeing and so forth so a quick pint would be easy to manage.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 19 August 2004 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

tomorrow = friday? I might be game for a pint. Saturday not good for me.

I will try and think of things you should go and see and post them later. I'd recommend the Sophie Calle exhibit in the royal hospital, only it finished last sunday.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 19 August 2004 10:52 (twenty-one years ago)

we could go for a pint in the Brazen Head, for it is both olde and nice. And for all that tourists go to it, it is nevertheless off the beaten track.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 19 August 2004 11:00 (twenty-one years ago)

You really must take a trip to the Ballymun estates.

an internet friend is really keen to visit The Mun. Because she is a big Virgin Prunes fan. Or a mentalist.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 19 August 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Friday night would be fine for me too. I could do either that or Saturday or both, depending on what other people can make it to. The Brazen Head looks good. I wouldn't mind going there.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 19 August 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

You really must take a trip to the Ballymun estates.

Pronounced 'Ballymooon'.

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 19 August 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't believe I've made the same lame comment I made over a years ago. Perhaps some of you can.

I am about tomorrow but I might be *stressed*. I can't believe I have known Tim Hopkins this long (and that Pavarotti story).

Lara (Lara), Thursday, 19 August 2004 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Nate, will you be checking mail laToR? I will have to try and think of a time when we should meet and stuff.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 19 August 2004 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I'll be checking e-mail and reading the board tomorrow during the day.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 19 August 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

It is funny about Kilian working in Stillorgan.

Lara, I often read old threads and think something, and find that it is the same thing I wrote 3 years ago.

Go and see Clontarf? The Dart breaks down specially to let you off near it.

Myles's house in Blackrock has a cat outside it.

One day I had better go to McDaid's - I am baffled by how it has avoided me so long.

I have just finished me drafts on Behan and (again) Myles!

the finefox, Thursday, 19 August 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

McDaid's is a pub for rugger buggers. Run Away!

Nate, I will send you an e-mail in a bit with my phone number and meetup suggestions.

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 19 August 2004 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Got your e-mail. Thanks. My reply is on its way.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 20 August 2004 09:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I am going to be in Germany but I extend the welcome of Dublin to you.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 20 August 2004 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I am suggesting meeting Nate at front gate of Trinity at 6.30.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 20 August 2004 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Alright, that sounds like a plan. I'm looking forward to meeting you, and any other Dublin ILXors who can make it.

ps - Thanks for the welcome, Ronan. Sorry I missed you on this trip.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 20 August 2004 10:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I will try to come along too (for a little bit). Where are we planning on going for drinks - I'm presuming alcohol is part of the bargain here?

Welcome welcome indeed.

Lara (Lara), Friday, 20 August 2004 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank you for the welcome. I'm not sure where is the best place to go for drinks - any suggestions would be welcome, or we could just stroll around until we find a place.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 20 August 2004 12:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I was thinking somewhere like The Palace, because that's where we went with the Pinefox.

To some extent we just need to go somewhere to kill time till Irene gets in from her badger-baiting.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 20 August 2004 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

there is talk of September 27th

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 20 August 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this happening NOW?

the finefox, Friday, 20 August 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Finefox - in a couple of minutes I will slouch from my office down to meet this O.Nate fellow.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 20 August 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

And what Dirty Vicar

Slouches towards Trinity

To be drunk

?

the finefox, Friday, 20 August 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

What is Dublin's weather like?

I am going to want a report on the state of THE PALACE BAR, in CAMDEN STREET, I mean, FLEET STREET.

the finefox, Friday, 20 August 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

ah now, ah now.

DV (dirtyvicar), Friday, 20 August 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

The Palace on FLEET STREET is packed so we are going to tha aptly named Temple Bar in Temple Bar. I am about to leave my office. Apparently this O.Nate fellow is American!

Weather: sunny, breezy, bloody cold with a propensity towards rain.

Lara (Lara), Friday, 20 August 2004 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Here, it is a downpour!

I can't believe it is sunny in Dublin. I half wish I were there.

the finefox, Friday, 20 August 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I bet they are still in the pub.

It must be good.

the finefox, Friday, 20 August 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks to all who came out for showing me such a fun evening last night. Dublin ILXors are the best. I hope I can come back sometime soon.

o. nate (onate), Saturday, 21 August 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

was there a saturday night FAP too?

I am going for more booze now.

DV (dirtyvicar), Sunday, 22 August 2004 09:27 (twenty-one years ago)

More booze? Where??

the finefox, Sunday, 22 August 2004 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

No, unfortunately, there was no Saturday night FAP. I slept in rather late on Saturday (hmm, wonder why?) and frittered away the afternoon in a disorganized fashion and by the time I got to an Internet terminal, it was too late to make any plans or contact anyone.

o. nate (onate), Sunday, 22 August 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Excellent to meet you on Friday, Nate! I hope you enjoyed the rest of your time in the City of Rain.

Pintfox: we were at a wedding reception on Saturday in CLONTARF CASTLE. And we walked all the way home afterwards.

rener (rener), Monday, 23 August 2004 08:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I am sorry I didn't make it to the pint-up. I have recently relocated to my parents' house in Swords (near the airport) prior to re-relocating to Laytown. It is hard for me to muster up any energy after the commute these days, although in six months or so I should have it figured out.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Monday, 23 August 2004 10:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Clontarf Castle has a TEMPLARS BAR in it!

DV (dirtyvicar), Monday, 23 August 2004 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha Trish, I'll try to watch it tonight but it looks like pub after work so odds aren't good! Sorry, you'll have to hold off on Paul Bettany swooning for a bit longer. I'll see you at 2 so! We don't need them to have fun, we have booze and ting* :-p

*Patatas bravas and meatballs. Not w33d!

kv_nol, Friday, 11 May 2007 14:07 (eighteen years ago)

Market bar at 2.00pm? I hope to be there.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Saturday, 12 May 2007 09:24 (eighteen years ago)

hi dubliners. arrived midday yesterday & been wandering the streets. it is impossibly lovely here. so far really only had time for the natural history museum, book of kells, christ church cathedral.

playing a free show tonight at temple bar gallery if anyone wants to stop by and say ilx hi to bewildered-person-from-san-francisco.

Milton Parker, Thursday, 17 May 2007 11:12 (eighteen years ago)

Are you 'wobbly' then?

Sadly I can't make tonight, I am too far away and didn't know you'd be here. I hope it's a good show though.

accentmonkey, Thursday, 17 May 2007 12:01 (eighteen years ago)

Hello Milton Parker. I unfortunately cannot come to your show tonight. And I am a bit tied up over next few days (etc.). When are you leaving? Still around monday?

Actually, might be able to do lunch or something like that over next few days. maybe we could try to meet up by e-mail... drop me a line at dirtydotvicaratgmaildotcom ... you know the score.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Thursday, 17 May 2007 12:06 (eighteen years ago)

If you are around tomorrow evening, btw, me and Mister M are meeting a friend of ours for after work dinner, and then going on somewhere else, so if you're getting eats you could join us, if you like.

You can mail me also! I will get the webmail if you do it through here, or mail trishATperfectlycromulentDOTcom

accentmonkey, Thursday, 17 May 2007 12:09 (eighteen years ago)

I might be able to make this on the way to dinner or after cinema. Have you any ideas of times?

kv_nol, Thursday, 17 May 2007 12:11 (eighteen years ago)

Oh right, sorry just saw the 8 pm. Looks like I won't be able to make it until much later so I'll probably have missed you. I'll walk by on the way back and see what's going on. Any clue of what you look like to prevent embarrassment (a la colonel whatchamaycallhim at a fap a long long time ago :( )?

kv_nol, Thursday, 17 May 2007 12:21 (eighteen years ago)

I'm going away this weekend, so no ILX pranks for me ... I hope you enjoy Dublin/Ireland, Milton!

rener, Thursday, 17 May 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

xpost, tonight I'm Freddy actually!

I _love_ Dublin, I'm walking around kind of awestruck, the whole city is really hitting me. I can't believe it but my schedule has me leaving tomorrow morning, on the bus to the airport at 530 -- I am not sleeping tonight. raincheck on dinner with more advance warning to accentmonkey & all on dubliners, I am really going to have to come back to this place...

kv -- I got glasses & a blue shirt and somebody just tolds me I look like Clark Kent and I'll be drinking (not a helpful descriptor I know)

Milton Parker, Thursday, 17 May 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sorry to miss you, Milton. It's always good to have visitors. Drop us a mail in advance next time you're over and we'll for sure hook up, and show you secret places that non-dubs don't know.

I can't think of any off-hand, but I'm sure we can invent some.

accentmonkey, Thursday, 17 May 2007 19:34 (eighteen years ago)

"And here is Fitzsimons, a lovely place we like to keep to ourselves"

The Real Dirty Vicar, Thursday, 17 May 2007 22:04 (eighteen years ago)

Anyway, sorry to miss you, Mr/Ms Parker.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Thursday, 17 May 2007 22:05 (eighteen years ago)

Ha ha @ Fitzsimons. Horrible place.

I got there too late Milton. The place was shut at 10:45! Hope it went well. Hope to catch you next time for pints and things.

Does anyone remember the Pinefox? He will soon be in Dublin.

Winding Stair a classic and was pretty good when I was there in December

https://www.winding-stair.com/

from…Peru? (gyac), Wednesday, 11 June 2025 11:28 (nine months ago)

thanks!

devvvine, Wednesday, 11 June 2025 11:36 (nine months ago)

what areas and budget and experience you looking for

id say most good restaurants will cater well for seafood options

I've heard good things about sole and cornucopia in d2

tuah dé danann (darraghmac), Wednesday, 11 June 2025 11:38 (nine months ago)

(latter is vegan or vegetarian im actually not sure which)

tuah dé danann (darraghmac), Wednesday, 11 June 2025 11:42 (nine months ago)

mainly central and around sandymount. budget is fairly open; would like to spend a bit on a nice meal, though recs for cheaper places on the go also useful.

devvvine, Wednesday, 11 June 2025 11:52 (nine months ago)

Do you specifically want trad Irish food, or...? I liked Glas a lot the one time I was in it, but that was a few years ago. L. Mulligan is reliable and has good vegetarian/pescatarian options. For non-Irish food, there's Andhra Bhavan, with branches on Marlborough St and Abbey St. I haven't been to Shaku Maku, but I hear it's great. And Gursha, an Ethiopian place, is also good.

I'm sure I've messed up some of those links.

trishyb, Wednesday, 11 June 2025 11:55 (nine months ago)

wouldn't mind something trad but will depend how my wife feels, so those are really useful thanks!

devvvine, Wednesday, 11 June 2025 11:58 (nine months ago)

I'm sure there are lovely fish restaurants in and around Sandymount, Blackrock, Dalkey, etc, but I just don't know any of them.

trishyb, Wednesday, 11 June 2025 12:10 (nine months ago)

Crudo in Sandymount is a nice Italian seafood spot

Number None, Wednesday, 11 June 2025 13:25 (nine months ago)

It was pre-pandemic, but we enjoyed Forest Avenue, which had good modern plates with a great wine list by the glass.

il lavoro mi rovina la giornata (PBKR), Wednesday, 11 June 2025 13:54 (nine months ago)

oh yeah i had an absolutely amazing night there once years ago

tbh i find it hard to recommend places if I haven't been there in a whileunless im imagining it but im finding real consistency from year to year hard to find in dublin food options

tuah dé danann (darraghmac), Wednesday, 11 June 2025 17:57 (nine months ago)

sunday lunch at the old spot would be local enough but its almost comically ye olde inne red meat fare and i cant remember if ive seen a fish option the once or twice ive been

tuah dé danann (darraghmac), Wednesday, 11 June 2025 17:58 (nine months ago)

up as far as grand canal ive had a few good times at charlotte quay if the ore theatre menu looks like it has options

tuah dé danann (darraghmac), Wednesday, 11 June 2025 18:01 (nine months ago)

Oh yeah, Charlotte Quay is v pleasant, just avoid after work on a Friday.

trishyb, Wednesday, 11 June 2025 18:22 (nine months ago)

Bar Pez is good for a small plates + wine vibe; Fish Shop is divisive (fancy fish and chips) but I like it; Two Pups for breakfast/brunch

tortillas for the divorce party (seandalai), Thursday, 12 June 2025 01:22 (nine months ago)

wow thanks all, extremely helpful!

devvvine, Thursday, 12 June 2025 10:34 (nine months ago)

What’s that chipper people go on about? I feel for cheaper options you should definitely attend one. There’s like Leo Burdock in Howth but it’s been forever since I was there tbf

from…Peru? (gyac), Thursday, 12 June 2025 11:09 (nine months ago)

yeah, Burdock's is bad now (maybe it always was?)

absolute daylight robbery too
