I took well over a 100 photos and these are just the ones that stand out. If you want to see more, contact me. And sorry for most of these being big, but -- well -- it is Alaska after all, and you can't defy the Kodiak gods by cropping these treasures to bite size morsels.

(my rental car)

The following were all taking on one of the Kenai Fjord cruises just south of Seward (We encountered a pod of 200 dolphins and porpoises half way through, but they're REALLY hard to photograph, so no photos there) :

They really are stunning

I don't think I've ever felt this close to feeling like I was inside an issue of National Geographic before. If you can do something like this once in your life, I highly recommend it.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 04:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

Spencer, that's the Aialik glacier, and the exposed rock underneath there is called Pyramid Rock. Apparently, a new face of ice gets unfolded every day. While we were there on the boat near that glacier, huge chunks of ice were falling off every three minutes or so. The perspective is really wacky, but we were actually a half a mile away. There was a 2-3 second delay between seeing the ice fall, and hearing it fall.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 04:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

I have more photos of that glacier... I might post more later.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 04:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm utterly speechless here. More pix!

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 04:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

Glaciers flowing into the ocean -- and fjords in general, for that matter -- are treasures. Well done, sir! I will have to journey there myself one day.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 04:12 (twenty-one years ago) link

And last batch for now... photos of the Aialik glacier (for Chris and Spencer). It's worth noting that the temperature dropped from about 75F to about 62F at this point, given that big chunks of ice tend to make their own weather, so to speak. (It was even hotter inland.. it was in the mid to high 80F's in the Anchorage area this weekend)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 04:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

I keep humming songs from Porcupine. And the first PM Dawn album for that matter.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 04:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

I played Capitol K's "Island Rows" on repeat on the way back... it feel really well.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 04:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

The reason for the blue shades in the ice is because those are the densest parts of the ice. The ice is so dense that only the highest frequency light, the ultra-blue spectrum/high intensity, is seen, as it refracts and bends so many times. It was entirely possibly a big enough ice chunk could have fallen such that the boat would have suffered a 25 foot swell.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 04:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

As if I didn't miss mountains enough already. Thanks, asshole. ;-)

Man. .. I totally wanted to drive up the west coast to Alaska this summer. No money.

Next summer, absolutely.

Wow.

Sam, I'm coming with you.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 08:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

wow, those are just amazing, that is so cool that you got to do that. where exactly did you go? was it mostly a cruise, or were just the ones with the glaciers from a boat trip?

colette (a2lette), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 09:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

Just discovered this thread...sounds like you had an awesome trip.
I hate to do this to y'all, but I live in Alaska, in Ketchikan, southeast
Alaska. I see most of this stuff every day when I look out the window.
(No ice or glaciers here, though, too far south). It's great, in many ways,
but it rains like a bitch and since we're on an island, not connected to
the road system, it can feel claustrophobic at times. It's still heaven if you
like the wilderness (I do but I take it for granted).

oh shit... how could i forget? This is the "talking" moose at the general gift store on 4th st. in Anchorage. It was quite pathetic. "Why thank you for stopping by our general store." "Keep in mind 300 of my neighbors live here, so please drive safely". All said in the voice of an indifferent teenage boy working a fast food shift.

"Keep in mind 300 of my neighbors live here, so please drive safely".

Tell me this wasn't a stuffed, mounted, and animatronicized moose saying this.

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 06:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

I can tell you it wasn't, but I'd be lying. (I'll reiterate, Anchorage is "meh" at best. You must ESCAPE Anchorage to see the good stuff)

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 06:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

So this moose died so that others might live. Kind of an inspiring story really.

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 06:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

Sounds like Alaska in general, I'd guess.

I really loved Alaska when I visited, it's beautiful. I'm way too much of a whiner about snow to live there though.
