Allah, why are you punishing Chicago?

Is it because the music scene is supposedly "hot" here now? I see no other reason for this shitty-ass weather and nonsummer to be inflicted on a city this far from the corridors of power. BITE ME!!! BITE ME, STUPID RAIN!!!! This totally goes against the logic of revenge. Or... does it? The Native Americans weren't in it with whatever gods gave Europe the second-pooawfullest climate in the world, not to mention the plague, were they? You didn't make your belt-buckle-brandishing father's boss such an asshole, did you? And surely it's not by order of Man that Fran Drescher has to harpoon herself with tampons every month. You tell me, I'm busy stomping on my umbrella. JESUS! (ho. ho.)

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

And surely it's not by order of Man that Fran Drescher has to harpoon herself with tampons every month.

Thou Shalt Not Take the Nanny's Name in Vain.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Hands up everyone who thought this said, "Ally, [...]"!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 14:41 (twenty-two years ago)

is the allstar game gonna be rained out?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 14:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Score sports radio says no, but they also told me my ass wouldn't get soaked on the way to work.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I'm often confused for Allah, Dan.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I was actually enjoying the thunderstorm last night.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I wanna go scuba diving someday. Is Lake Michigan pretty? I sometimes like to hold my breath until I see stars because I like to say the word 'phosphenes' over and over again.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

"I was actually enjoying the thunderstorm last night."

Sure, it's great pretending you're Mary Shelley coming up with Frankenstein's monster... till you have to go #(&($ outside.

Stupid gods.

(I realize I'm just digging the hole deeper, but when I stop digging, it keeps widening.)

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, just be thankful it isn't 100 degrees outside.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

"...till you have to #(&($ outside."

You have an outhouse?

NA. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, just be thankful it isn't 100 degrees outside.

Amateurist understands me on a soulful level. What I wouldn't give for a thunderstorm!

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

You have sex in outhouses, Nick? Eeeeew.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

outhouses are SO sexy! The stink is like S&M and stuff.

Sarah MClusky (coco), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Hands up everyone who thought this said, "Ally, [...]"!

Me too! I wasn't sure why she would be, though.

Lars (Nicole), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank god, I almost forgot: All-Star game = take detour on way home.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Ann, don't forget: it could always be worse.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I am punishing Chicago cuz...well...cuz DITKA. Now lemme see dem sausages.

Allah_Farley (nickalicious), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't the all star game at the old Rosemont Horizon or something?

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"'...till you have to #(&($ outside.'

You have an outhouse?"

Not even -- I have to #($(# out my window. I told you my ass was soaked! Must... paddle back to... copyediting thread...

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Look, it's sunny now!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:18 (twenty-two years ago)

What I wouldn't give for a thunderstorm!

Ooh! I'm getting my wish! The hurrican will bring "heavy rains" over the next coupla days. Sadly, though, the highs will still be in the upper 80's through the whole thing. Why can't we get arctic storms once in a while, instead of the damn tropical ones?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"Ann, don't forget: it could always be worse. "

Yeah, sure, and it could make more sense, too -- DUH, what do they pump in Texas?

Wait a minute...

Cripes, Allah really IS confused.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:21 (twenty-two years ago)

What do they put in the coffee down on Illinois?

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Ann, how 'bout you go write one of your trademark sassy restaurant reviews? That'll cheer you up.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

i have a punny photoshop opportunity for those so inclined:

adm. ally akbar

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I HATE YOU.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

"Ann, how 'bout you go write one of your trademark sassy restaurant reviews? That'll
cheer you up."

Funny you should say that, since Bartleby just lost MS Word and possibly the restaurant box I was working on.

What's that in my coffee? Oh! It's bile!

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

"Ooh! I'm getting my wish! The hurrican will bring "heavy rains" over the next coupla
days. Sadly, though, the highs will still be in the upper 80's through the whole thing.
Why can't we get arctic storms once in a while, instead of the damn tropical ones?"

You are a madman. I'm never really happy till it's 90 degrees outside.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh. And I am not happy until it's below 40. We should switch places.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Where do you live, and what else is good about the place?

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I live in Austin. WHat's good about it? Well... a lot, really. But I'm moving to Chicago in 6 weeks, so I'd rather not think too much about why Austin is good. Just make me sad.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I can only hope that Allah hates you even more than he hates me, and that he will express his opinion by cancelling winter.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm never really happy until it's 130 degrees and I'm floating in a bowl of egg drop soup with my buddy DAVID VAN BERKEL. David! Where are you? Nine years is LONG ENOUGH. I'm ok now!

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you insane woman? This summer has been the best weather-wise that I can remember. I'm sitting here w/the breeze coming through the window and the sun shining in...I can even ignore those FUCKING KIDS WHO HONK THEIR GODDAMN SCOOTER HORNS EVERY 5 SECONDS

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

See, now Oops is obviously in it with the friggin Eskimos...

Scooters??? What nabe you live in? Loyola????

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Where do you live, Anne? Cause I'm looking for apartments right now, and I'm focusing on Uptown / Ravenswood (although I'm still a little unclear on where "uptown" beings and ends, but, you know, north of Irving park), and I can use all the insights I can get.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Kenan didn't we deal with "Uptown" on another thread?

Also: Do you have a car?

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

No car. I remember the Uptown discussion on another thread, but got nothing solid out of it.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

My sister lived in Ravenswood (near Lawrence and Damen) and got by fine w/o a car, although she did love it when she got to borrow mine of course.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

We do have a car, but we're thinking very seriously of selling it. If we can.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:52 (twenty-two years ago)

You probably won't want to do that. It's possible not to have a car in Chicago, but it's really nice if one's available.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

But don't you usually have to pay for a parking spot?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Huh? No. Where I live there's tons of street parking.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

only with blood
(x post)

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh. And where is that? (Not trying to stalk anybody, understand.)

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't even know how to drive and I'm happy in north Uptown -- the public transit is the best I think imaginable in the City of Stupid Drivers, Sociopaths in SUVs, and Broken Trains. (Having a car almost sounds worse than not having one!!!)It's close to the lake too, lots of nice places to walk and listen to headphones. However, since we AN's have provided the thin wedge of gentrification, rents are shooting up, so get in fast with a landlord who likes you.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

"North Uptown"? Like Argyle?

The area between the lake Clark between Montrose and Foster can be kind of icky. I wouldn't look there. Also parking is really difficult in that neighborhood. Farther west, like west of Ashland, parking generally gets really easy.

I'd recommend living off the Brown Line, if you plan to work downtown.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, just north of Argyle. It's becoming a really weird place.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

(Jessa's sister just got a place at Bryn Mawr and Sheridan, and she's really excited about it, and it's $700 for 500 sq feet, and she plans to live with her new boyfriend. I think this is a terrible idea. I know firsthand what 500 square feet can do to a new relationship.)

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm just hoping it clears up by the time I leave work.

jaymc, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 20:43 (eighteen years ago)

same here. Because I don't have an umbrella on me, because it wasn't supposed to rain today, so I may have to modify a garbage bag to wear home or something equally humiliating.

kenan, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 20:44 (eighteen years ago)

Addison turns into a river when it rains.

Jeff, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 20:49 (eighteen years ago)

At least it washes the urine away.

Jeff, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 20:49 (eighteen years ago)

It already looks lighter outside than it did 10 minutes ago. And my dad, who just called me, said it's already moved through the western suburbs. So we might be OK.

jaymc, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 20:50 (eighteen years ago)

I was just about to say that! There are newspaper boxes floating out my window. Very surreal.

xpost to Jeff.

en i see kay, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 20:50 (eighteen years ago)

Can this also be the "please-stop-making-it-rain-krishna-because-Texas-is-going-to-wash-away" thread?

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 20:52 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think it has rained at all here in Hyde Pk. The sky is very dark though.

Hi non-Chicago-thread-regular Chicago people!

dan m, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 20:53 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, lightning definitely just struck the building two doors over. It seems to have hit a lightning rod, thankfully, but still.

Allah is angry about John Amaechi leading teh gayz in a rollicking good time this weekend, obviously.

en i see kay, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 21:01 (eighteen years ago)

hey, i'm watching the news, lake shore drive between division and north avenue is under water, looks like two lanes open going north, one going south. traffic is fucked, adjust your travel plans accordingly.

also, jerry taft on wls said that the channel 7 studio got between 3 and four inches of rain in the last hour so i'm sure the red line and blue line are going to be fucked too.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 21:03 (eighteen years ago)

I am in the Sears Tower right now (little more than halfway up). And although I know, academically, that the building was built to sway, I actually experienced it with all of my senses a little while ago. Very much not at all fun. My lizard brane was telling me to evacuate my bowels and the building, in no particular order.

Deric W. Haircare, Thursday, 23 August 2007 21:13 (eighteen years ago)

yeah that was a major complaint when they built it, too... the swaying FREAKED people out

kenan, Thursday, 23 August 2007 21:14 (eighteen years ago)

I'm in the IBM building, and the broad side was to the wind. There was movement. Not bowel movement, thankfully.

i worked at the obv. deck of the hancock for a while. on any windy day you can lean into the windows, pressing your forehead to the glass, look down and watch your field of view change by several feet back and forth on the ground below.

some of my co-workers would get motion sickness on the really bad days.
