BREAKFAST??

Inspired by grocery shopping w/ Geeta thread.

I haven't eaten a real breakfast in nearly three years. I just can't be bothered. Do you eat breakfast? How much time do you set aside for it? Do you wait until you're at work and then go for donuts and coffee? Instant oatmeal at home over the newspaper?

I hardly know anybody who actually eats breakfast anymore, actually. WTF.

Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

A coffee and a muffin when I'm in the office. If unemployed (i.e. most of the time) I have a coffee, a bowl of cereal (ASDA's crucnhcy and crispy thing is nice) and a glass of orange and cranberry juice. If I'm entertaining, I'll find any excuse to go for the full English. If in the states, waffles, num.

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I have toast in the office, yum. On weekends I usually completely forget about it but it's nice to make a bacon and egg sandwich on Sunday mornings to help shift a hangover.

self-serve hotel breakfasts = CLASSIC. my arteries stiffen at the thought.

j0e (j0e), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

We have been out for breakfast twice this week. Bacon, eggs, sausage mushrooms black pudding, beans, tomato.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 10:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I always eat breakfast. If I am at work, I usually bring in some bread for toasting or sum cereal. I am starving by 11 if I don't. I love breakfasts at the w/e's where it is more leisurely & usually eaten as 'brunch'. Toast rules, but then so does pan au chocolat & croissants. Oh & several cups of tea & a glass of OJ. I love breakfast.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 10:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i vary my breakfast all the time - over the last month i've had the following things for breakfast (individually):

fried bacon and mushrooms with toast
toast and marmite
crunchy nut cornflakes
microwaved pizza
waffels with jam
sausages and mushrooms
sara lee apple danish bar

i will die soon a content man

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 10:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Croissants - is there a more versatile foodstuff? They're neither sweet nor savoury but it is so easy to make them so. Marmalade in one and melted cheese and ham (well the ham's not melted) in the other. Mmm.

j0e (j0e), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 10:47 (twenty-two years ago)

this is my favourite thread ever. can I buy a subscription?

j0e (j0e), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I love breakfast. It might be becoming my favourite meal. I eat a bowl of hippiemunch. Plain yoghurt, sweetened with a bit of honey, and then mixed with Mueslix. Yum.

(In an ideal world, I'd have a big greasy fry-up breakfast every morning, but then I would be the size of 2 houses instead of just one.)

kate (kate), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i want proper american style pancakes

and i still think about moving to Croydon, just so i can go to Doughmasters for breakfast, lunch and - yes - dinner

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i haven't eaten today yet - this thread is equally a curse and blessing

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 10:54 (twenty-two years ago)

ooh yes, pancakes with maple syrup for breakfast is yum. Also a veggie version of the 'fry-up' (except it's all grilled) is also a big fave of mine.

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 10:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I eat far fewer breakfasts in hot weather than in the winter. Lately I can't even face tea or coffee. When I do have it I'll usually have toast, or bagels if Matt's made any. Or (especially when hungover) I wait til I get to work and have pastry type things.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Mmmm, this thread is making me hungry. And all I have for lunch if broccoli and hummus. :-(

kate (kate), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 11:05 (twenty-two years ago)

i had crayfish salad for breakfast today

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 11:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Cold takeaway leftovers for breakfast: C/D?

j0e (j0e), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 11:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Definitely classic, you cannot beat cold pizza for breakfast!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 11:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Pizza never survives long enough round mine to make it to breakfast. :-(

kate (kate), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

It only survives in our house if we buy a family size each!! biffas r u!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I have to have breakfast or that's it - the day is over. I'm a moody, surly boy most mornings and it takes me about 2 hours to wake up. If I don't get a cup of tea within that period my eyes don't work properly and my skin itches. I like proper filter coffee but it's such a hassle though if it's breakfast out or abroad, then coffe remains the way forwards usually. In the week I restrict myself to cereal or toast too, mainly because I don't have the time or will to sort anything more enticing.

Clearly though, a well prepared breakfast on the weekend is one of life's joys. A full English on a hangover is always a classic (especially with hash browns), even though you know it's a heartstopper and 9 times out of 10, the grease leaves you gagging, but when it hits the spot, God it's good. My speciality is eggs benedict though. I make rocking eggs benedict. Mmmm... eggs benedict... Nothing beats it. Although stawberries and champaign comes close, now that I think on it.

Alex K (Alex K), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex is so OTM!

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

after the other day's 'incident' i've decided that having some solid food along with the usual 10 cups of coffee might be a good idea

dave q, Wednesday, 16 July 2003 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

i have just reached "2nd breakfast" stage (= can of coke and three anadin extra)

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to eat corned beef hash like it was going out of style, then I gained 20 pounds because of it. Now I have a 20 oz coffee and drink water.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

In my house, we have something called the "Countdown To Crankiness!" which occurs if breakfast is not provided within an hour or so of waking up. This was eventually solved by my buying a bag of muselix and leaving it at his house (HSA will not eat it, he claims that it is "freak food" - funny, that's what he said about chamomile tea until he realised he liked it) but at the weekend, C2C occurs if he doesn't take me to the cafe or go and buy some pan au chocolat!

kate (kate), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 11:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I eat breakfast (as opposed to "lunch is early today") now that I'm having to be up so early and unnaturally compared to my default schedule. Otherwise, by the time I'm really awake and thinking, I realize I'm hungry and that I've another few hours on campus.

Rarely feel like cooking anything, but don't like anything too sweet for breakfast. For awhile I was going with cheese, these little single-serving packs of Black Diamond cheddar. Now I'm on this Chex Morning Mix stuff, which is sweet, but not like Pop-Tarts or something.

This morning -- microwaved minestrone.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Ditto to fry-ups when hungover. I rarely get up in time to have breakfast on weekdays, so I usually only grab a slice of toast or a nutri-grain at work. Weekends, I'm partial to a bacon buttie - and Liz makes excellent drop-scones/scotch pancakes.

robster (robster), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

ha ha, second breakfast, mark s revels in his hobbitry

Quaker Fruit & Oatmeal Bars & Bites

Introducing my breakfast. Most of the time, anyway.

Just Deanna (Dee the Lurker), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I get cranky without breakfast too. If I'm at work without breakfast I start feeling very weak, frazzled, and melodramatic. I usually have a slim fast bar or some yogurt and/or fruit. This morning I went nutso and bought an iced decaf coffee and a slice of pound cake.
On the weekends, I like to laze around in coffeeshops in the morning or have coffee and muffins at home (lemon poppy, yum!). But sometimes we end up at a diner for breakfast and get french toast and hashbrowns or something.

Sarah MCLusky (coco), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

bah my breakfast was a flop, i tried to mix greek yoghurt with nutella in a croissant. sorrow ensued

Chip Morningstar (bob), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I love breakfast but don't usually eat it on workdays anymore. I typically just have coffee, one or two cups. Some days I get a muffin or something on the way in, other days someone brings food into work.
I really love cereal but I never have it because neither Sarah nor I drink milk so our milk always goes bad before I use it up and also I prefer cereal as an afternoon snack anyways.
Big greasy diner breakfasts...mmmm...

NA. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 12:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Weekday mornings its toast and if Im luckya bannana well watching SCTV/Win Ben Stiens Money reruns and getting dressed.
Weekends its eggs, bacon, toast and hashbrowns or if I'm feeling good I'll walk the 5-10 minutes to all the bakeries down the street and pick up some bagels and sometimes lox.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I tend to just have a glass of orange juice or something, but sometimes I'll have what I call "semi-English" - hash browns, fried mushrooms and fried slice.

Chriddof (Chriddof), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

coffee and cigarettes - the breakfast of champions

H (Heruy), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

My breakfast is usually like 5 cigarettes and about 7 cups of coffee. Nothing like having the shakes for three hours. I would've had Powerpuff Girls ice cream for breakfast today but the ice cream man wasn't on the corner.

Sometimes I go on this kick when I decide to actually give a shit about my health and not just slide into a series of debilitating blood sugar crashes versus super activity, and then I eat breakfast but eating in the morning tends to make me queasy if I'm taking my meds which I never fucking do anyway so I should just eat.

I had a bagel yesterday but there was so much butter on it that I thought I was going to die from mouth greasiness.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I eat breakfast on weekends, and sometimes even on weekdays. This was going to be a big breakfast week for me. Monday: migas, cantaloupe and watermelon. So filling, so good Tuesday: watermelon. Today: coffee.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 13:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Fucking hell eggs benedict.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 13:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Mmmm, eggs benedict, heart attack on a toasted muffin

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

(There was going to be more of my post, but my browser crashed, and somehow submitted my unfinished post in its dying breath. Weird.)

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I had a lovely bacon sarnie this morning, great bacon, tasted char-grilled, just on plain white toasted (I fancied a break fronm the norm with the toast) It worked a treat.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Weekday breakfasts are OJ and a roll or bran muffin, with an apple later in the day to alleviate munchies before my mid-afternoon lunch. But on the weekends, I take advantage of the great restaurant nearby -- Memphis by name -- to indulge. Eggs benedict over brioche? Oh DO go on...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Coffee, yogurt and a banana most days, plus perhaps a bagel on weekends. I always crave a traditional diner breakfast (eggs, bacon, hash browns, toast, etc.), but those of you who saw the NYC pics will understand that the last thing I need is a megadose of grease.

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 14:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i love breakfast, it's my favorite kind of food.

during the week i have cereal here (in the states i always had 'classic chocolate' instant breakfast. yum)

my boy likes to cook breakfast for us on weekends, and usually ends up making 1.5 or 2 kinds, since he wants all the pork product and i'm veg.

real american breakfasts are one of the things i miss most about home. real pancakes. french toast. waffles. morningstar farms veggie sausage. i wonder if i can bring back frozen sausage next time i visit? i'd imagine that the people scanning my bags would be confused...

colette (a2lette), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I simply do not desire ANY food before noon, and I've found I don't need it. People tell me it's unhealthy but I think I'm merely giving my digestive system a break.

Aaron A., Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread is making me feel nauseated, the amount of coffee you people drink is insane

Millar (Millar), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

There's nothing wrong with drinking gallons of coffee.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm all about breakfast, and usually second breakfast as well. I have to be super alert when I walk into work at 5:30, so I have one cup of strong coffee and a couple of frozen waffles for breakfast, which is enough to maintain blood sugar but not enough to make me sleep again. Between nine and ten I have a powerbar and maybe a piece of fruit, or sometimes I'll take my lunch hour then to go out for a huge greasy power breakfast.

I have to watch the news before I go into work anyway, so it's not like I'm spending extra time on breakfast.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 16:02 (twenty-two years ago)

if you drink 100 cups of coffee in quick succession, does time really stop and nothing moves except you? (great scene in that Futurama where Fry does just that)

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

haha Millar drives a beetle.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 17 July 2003 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Millar, have you considered the possibility that you're no longer entirely human? Does your work involve exposure to anything that may have fallen to earth, possibly from outer space?

Ally, the second Dr. Pepper was the insidious molecules of caffeine in his bloodstream calling out to their brethren and staging a revolution in his brane.

Andre (afarrell), Thursday, 17 July 2003 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone who's seen Millar's forearms will know he's not exaggerating about the fist-clenching. Dude, your "dozy" is the rest of the world's "totally amped". But caffeine is a mysterious thing.

Ever since I wuz in France I'm on espresso, specifically "cafe noisette" which isn't actually hazelnut, they call it that because the added milk gives it that color

It's cool because making it in the morning forces me to actually get up 10-15 minutes earlier and then i sit with my little cup of espresso and that is nice

At this stage of the day—10 minutes after waking up—its super-concentrated form makes the drug-like effects of caffeine far more apparent to me than a grande cup of bitter brown water does. I can literally feel my ear canals opening up, and the skin on my head feels like it loosens up a little. Mmmmmahh. And since espresso is consumed in such tiny quantities I like to imagine I'm not as prone to incidents like the one dave q alludes to above; I could be wrong about that but I really do think it was the walnuts somehow. Um.

In France NO ONE eats the big lardy fry-up so beloved by Americans and Brits; salt in the morning is verboten. Instead they have LES PETITS SUISSES, tiny FIRM little yogurts that you do a whole rigamarole with just to remove from the container, and then you douse them with tons of sugar and mush them around. The yogurt in France is jaw-dropping!@@! Crème de Yaourt for instance might be the dreamiest dairy product I've ever eaten! Also everyone has cheap little OJ-squeezing machines, even if they don't use them. And croissants of course, but you have to wake up before noon or you won't get any.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 17 July 2003 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

WHY DON'T YOU JUST GO MARRY THE FRENCH ALREADY, TRACER!!!!!!!!!! (tho you are so right about the breakfast shit, croissants and the yogurts are like god has blessed us with food happiness)

Andre, btw?

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 17 July 2003 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, sorry about that. I was going to add a line about how there are no coincidences, and so I first changed my name to Andrew Mulder. Then I thought "What THE HELL am I doing being Andrew Mulder when I can be Fox Farrell?", so I started to delete it, then my clublike fingers hit the enter key instead.

It's all go around here.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 17 July 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Darlin', that is the most convoluted typo I've ever heard of in my life. "Fox Farrell"!!!

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 17 July 2003 16:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Of the Fox Farrell 5!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 17 July 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh can I join? I want to be the one who tells crap jokes.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 17 July 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

b-b-but Ally I've got all these vacation photos I want to show you, and wry observations on the human condition and shit

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 17 July 2003 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Tracer is SuperSartre.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 July 2003 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

My breakfast usually consists of a huge glass of water followed by a double espresso shot. I just can't deal with food early in the morning. It actually almost disgusts me. I didn't even like cigarettes in the morning when I smoked more, and I actually force myself to have the coffee since I know I'll actually get some work done before lunch if I have it.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 17 July 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope they're pictures of you crusted with blood at a rave, Tracer.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 17 July 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Had i brought the camera w/me to the "rave" I doubt I'd have any vacation pictures at all. Disposable camera + gallons of blood = ooh that actually sounds like an art project.

The first thing I think about in the morning is food! If it wasn't for breakfast of some kind I wouldn't even get up.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 17 July 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Disposable camera + gallons of blood + French rave=Saatchi collection.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 17 July 2003 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

today i had a poached egg with a slice of german brown bread and then a hearty ethiopian breakfast which consisted of kinche (cracked oat, barley or wheat cooked w/ milk, and then you add Ethiopian butter) firfir (pieces of hand ripped injera that have been soaked in wat) and chechebsa (tortillalike pancake which is mixed with butter and berebere (spice) and fried)

usually do not eat this much but stayed up all night working and felt I needed a slightly more filling meal than my usual coffee and cigarettes

oh yeah, youghurt on the side to cut the spiciness of the food.

H (Heruy), Thursday, 17 July 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

H has made me hungrier and more jealous of anything foodwise in a long time. Fuck you. And thank you for putting up with me whenever I eventually get there.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 July 2003 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread is great, it's breakfast voyeurism.

Now that I'm working full-time all I can manage is two pieces of toast to be eaten while I make my lunch, or a bowl of cereal or oatmeal (Quaker's Cinnamon Roll) if I get up amazingly early. Coffee comes at work, but I'm trying to keep it to one cup per morning.

Weekends though, I love to make omelettes and french toast and waffles with potatoes at home. Out-of-town gigs are exciting because it means a garaunteed excuse for the oft-mentioned greasy diner breakfast. The best breakfast place is here in Madison, though, they make their omelettes like three inches thick.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 17 July 2003 17:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Breakfast - strawberry oatmeal bar thing, coffee. Lunch - leftover lamb, tater tots, jalapeno ketchup, coffee, Diet Big Red. Dinner is a-cookin.

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 17 July 2003 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

But would you hit it?

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 17 July 2003 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

at home: coffee, with a bit of milk. pita bread with spreadable feta cheese. a glass of grapefruit juice.
on the train: an apple or a banana, sometimes a pear.

amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, 17 July 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Like Millar, a caffeinated beverage is about as close as I come to a breakfast. I regularly get the caffeine thing wrong, which is why I'm glad I don't drive.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 17 July 2003 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

haha Millar drives a beetle.

Don't laugh. I've seen Millar's Beetle and it kicks all sorts of ass. Very much a land born Q-ship.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 17 July 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 17 July 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes.

Tep wtf is up with your jokes lately?

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 18 July 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

What the hell is wrong with my jokes?! My jokes ROCK. NO ONE laughed at my "clubbing" joke, and it was like the funniest damn thing I said in my life ever.

Anyway, breakfast today was the Bacon-egg-and-cheese McGriddle, and I was a little disappointed cause it wasn't weird enough. Egg and cheese are strong flavor-masks; the maple flavor was much more subdued than in the straight-up sausage McGriddle. It wasn't bad, it was just ... more normal.

Tep (ktepi), Friday, 18 July 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

It's 8:12am here, early enough that I might actually go TRY one of those McGriddle atrocities.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 19 July 2003 11:13 (twenty-two years ago)
