i deserve better, Wednesday, 16 July 2003 14:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

Buy us a new server then.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 14:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

Grrr! It's so slow right now and I want to post like mad but instead I must play the waiting game. Oh, ILE! I love you so! And I will wait for you and slay dragons and cross waters... and so on.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Dramatic.

Yeah, it's running like crap. I say we start a paid admission program. $100 a year to post dick jokes. You'll have your new server in no time.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

It's always slow around this time. Is this a problem that the 12-foot lizards should be addressing?

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

Apparently there is some new RAM on the way which might alieviate things

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

Things? Like, trolls and spammers? That'd be nice.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't get the sense of entitlement coing from the original poster. Unless you are paying money towards buying RAM or a new server, you don't really "deserve" anything.

Larcole (Nicole), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

To whom this may concern:
1) Change the threads table commands in postadminedit.php from UPDATE to SELECT/REPLACE DELAYED, like the messages table commands already are.
2) See the note before usertime() in boardfunctions.php, it needs doing.
3) Clear out the referrals table
4) Fix the search engine (perhaps by tossing it in a skip). Upgrading to MySQL 4 might help.

Moderators could help by not editing or deleting messages at peak times, it instantly locks up the database. Also, someone needs to be trained in the use of the processes page.

More RAM won't help, much.

finnegan (graham), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

the original poster is clearly doing it with a sense tongue in cheek frustration (I mean, Raggett wink, hello?)

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

Then why use a fake name?

Larcole (Nicole), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

Maybe to poke fun at the implied sense of entitlement in the complaint?

NA. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

it weren't me btw

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

ILE suddenly seems zippier than it has been in weeks. If this isn't just a fluke, then thank you to whomever fixed it, and if it was by following Graham's advice above, then thank you to him too.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 19:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

is there a history of ILX posted somewhere.
I just realized that I have no idea what the deal is.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 20:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think in the FAQ Horace Mann.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 20:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

The FAQ, though it doesn't cover the last couple of months

I think it's coincidence Nick.

I guess as I'm posting today, i should mention that the millionth message was posted a few weeks ago, in the early hours of the day I had my strop. Without access to the database I can't link to the exact one, but it was a random thing on ILM.

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 20:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

Does the millionth message poster win a prize?

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 20:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

Apparently a bag of dicks is a very hot item here.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 20:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh I hope it was me.

Chris P (Chris P), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 20:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

This one seems familiar:
This is what I've been doing instead of posting to ILM: CDR700 1972

(it was around that time, anyway)

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 20:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

In my experience ILX gets very slow at around half-two to half-three UK time. This is also when most of the East Coast US posters are getting into work. Is this a coincidence or is the slowdown due to a lot of people looking over the night's updates at once?

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 17 July 2003 07:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

around 5:30 my time is when i've noticed it so, same time as you -

i've always just assumed with time difference that it was the amurricans getting up, online, and slowing everything down.

H (Heruy), Thursday, 17 July 2003 07:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

1,000,000th post: http://ilx.wh3rd.net/thread.php?msgid=3610654

Electric Sound of Jim (reprazent!) missed out by one post with this one: http://ilx.wh3rd.net/thread.php?msgid=3610655

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 17 July 2003 09:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

Of course, that isn't really the 1,000,000th post. Simply the 1,000,000 entry in the database at the moment. If some older posts were to be deleted, this would change. I don't think it's technically possible (with the data that we have) to find out what the millionth post submitted is. It probably happened a while ago.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 17 July 2003 09:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

dammit!! that was such a nice snarky post of mine, too!

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 17 July 2003 10:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't think the slowdown is anything to do with Australia. But the time zone thing is correct - it's the time of day that the British are still at work looking to kill the last hour before going home time, the NYC posse are on their lunchbreaks and then LA wakes up. The volume of all three at once is mindboggling.

kate (kate), Thursday, 17 July 2003 11:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

Earlier this evening I upgraded to MySQL 4.0.something and implemented Graham's suggestions (thanks graham!), apart from trashing the search script. I'm going to rebuild the fulltext index in its new, more efficient version 4 manifestation.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 17 July 2003 12:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

Eep! I didn't mean delete all of it, just remove the ones that only had one hit ages ago.

(Just checking, you did make the usertime() caching thing do more than just cache an offset for the whole page?)

Graham (graham), Thursday, 17 July 2003 12:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh, and MySQL 4 supports booleans in the search query, so my hacks for making it an all-word search and supporting quotes need rewriting.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 17 July 2003 12:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oops. Oh well.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 17 July 2003 12:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

My toaster jammed and the kitchen got all smokey so I had to open the backdoor to let some air in, and well, you saw what happened. Sorry everyone.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 17 July 2003 14:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yikes

If you want someone to blame, Kate: Admin log.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 17 July 2003 15:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm already blaming hstencil. ;-)

kate (kate), Thursday, 17 July 2003 15:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

HEY! No one is allowed to call Andre names besides me! That means you, Julio. Don't make me cancel our improv!

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 17 July 2003 15:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

Who's Andre? And when are we having dinner?

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 17 July 2003 15:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

Much though I approve of the way this thread is going, Kate does have precedent on her side.

Blimey, how long have we had an admin log for?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 17 July 2003 15:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

I got the POXY message too, for hours and hours. *sigh* But now I'm back with a vengeance!

Sarah McLusky (coco), Thursday, 17 July 2003 15:27 (twenty-one years ago) link

I AM THE CHAMPION!!! I AM THE CHAMPION!!!

I am the champion of calling moderators cunts. Actually, I'm not sure I want to be champion of that. Ally, you can have that one. Really. Go ahead, take it.

kate (kate), Thursday, 17 July 2003 15:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

''Don't make me cancel our improv!''

ok ok!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 17 July 2003 15:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think he knows, Graham.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 18 July 2003 21:49 (twenty-one years ago) link

?

Graham (graham), Friday, 18 July 2003 21:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh, I thought you were talking in reference to the previous post, sorry.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 18 July 2003 21:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

AlltheWeb.com seems to do a better job covering ILX than Google does.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 18 July 2003 22:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

Alternatively, you could bomb the U.S. into oblivion, thereby eliminating the Americans who are slowing everything down.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 18 July 2003 22:17 (twenty-one years ago) link

I've added AllTheWeb to the search page. Thanks for that, Rockist!

Andrew (enneff), Saturday, 19 July 2003 04:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

You could also have spent 5 seconds uncommenting the non-keyword searching and the old New Answers page system (which seems to have been taken out purely because it was on the same page as the search engine), that were never causing problems. No, that would mean doing something I suggested, and I'm evil.

Graham (graham), Saturday, 19 July 2003 12:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

Graham, just leave it for god's sake.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 19 July 2003 12:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

Graham, it sounds to me (from my position of ignorance) as if your suggestions are good ones, and I think they will be received with gratitude, but not if they come with hate-filled addenda.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 19 July 2003 14:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

i thought the old search system was excellent in its comprehensiveness but recognise the need for a stripped down version if its causing these blocks

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 19 July 2003 14:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh, that's handy that search brings that up now.

Al Andalous, Monday, 21 July 2003 12:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

Graham, had you actually read my post you'd see that I did implement your suggestions. I appreciate your input, but I feel that you may have serious emotional issues, and I suggest you get them sorted out before you lose credibility.

Andrew (enneff), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 05:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

too late!

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 06:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

Let's not blame Joel! I'm driving to Austin day after tomorrow to see him, prolly w/no AC and I will still refuse to blame Joel.

Texas Sam (thatgirl), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 06:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

So why haven't you bothered to reactivate the stuff that lots of people are demanding that never caused any problem?

serious emotional issues hahaha

Bath water (graham), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 14:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

I originally proposed taking search off because of a post of yours, Graham, that listed ways to speed up ILX. I can't link to it because I can't search - d'oh! - but as I recall you listed like six things, five of which were easy and the sixth of which was "completely rewrite the search function." I mean if Search wasn't the culprit I'm all for reinstating it cause I miss it keenly but..?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 22 July 2003 23:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

Keyword searching was the problem. It'd take a couple of minutes at most to reinstate the rest - I really don't get why he hasn't done it.

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 00:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

(This calls for a really good image post but I'm at a loss.)

James Ball (James Ball), Wednesday, 23 July 2003 14:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

four years pass...

ILX has been noticably slower for the last few days, is something up? It's the same with both my home and work computer, so the problem is not in this end. Of course this is nothing compared to the pre- new server slowness, but I was still wondering about it.

Tuomas, Monday, 5 November 2007 11:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Seems OK here!

Mark G, Monday, 5 November 2007 11:42 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah no problems with either my works or home ilx

Ste, Monday, 5 November 2007 11:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, seems slow over here too (Belgium, also both at home and at work, different ISPs). Started yesterday afternoon/last night, I think.

StanM, Monday, 5 November 2007 11:50 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, yesterday was when I noticed it too.

Tuomas, Monday, 5 November 2007 11:52 (seventeen years ago) link

Seemed OK for me yesterday.

snoball, Monday, 5 November 2007 12:25 (seventeen years ago) link

VERY slow at the moment. It took more than a minute to display this whole thread.

StanM, Monday, 5 November 2007 15:23 (seventeen years ago) link

Seems OK over here, maybe some sinister schengen authority is monitoring traffic to member nations.

Ed, Monday, 5 November 2007 15:29 (seventeen years ago) link

OK here, this thread loaded in a couple of seconds.

snoball, Monday, 5 November 2007 15:37 (seventeen years ago) link

Totally fine for me.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 November 2007 15:40 (seventeen years ago) link

Weird, if only me and Stan are experiencing this, could be some odd Continental European thing? Can't see what would cause it though, I have no problems with other sites.

I get small bits of thread and then nothing for seconds, then another small bit of thread, until finally, the whole page loads, then it stops for the "Add a Comment" section again, etc.
