Anthony -- I love the way you just say "discuss" and then we do it.

Anthony -- I love the way you just say "discuss" and then we do it.

Incidentally, I read the other day that such mission names actually conform to some sort of pattern, with their initials specifying certain military divisions or something like that. Thus an algorithm's necessary to match the proper initials with appropriate types of words to be considered for the final decision.

I wish I could remember where I read this, though, because it sounds like complete bullshit now that I'm trying to recall it.

Nitsuh, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well you are all intelligent people you do not need my help !

anthony, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maybe Bush was reading 'Infinite jest' and inspired, this sorta just came out - 'Infinite Justice'... Oh wait, I'm talking about Bush, that would never happen.

jason, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You forgot the word 'Operation' which adds to the twisted un-poetry of it all. It's actually 'Operation Infinite Justice.' Either an awful final solution joke (infinite?!) or a gross attempt to win over hip-hop heads.

And what's with all these titles anyway? I had CNN on at work last friday, and a guy walked by, noticed the tag, "America's New War" and commented: "'America's New War?' What happened to the last show, 'America Under Attack'? Boy, these sitcoms sure don't last long, do they."

scott, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

memepool had a link to this issue up the other day. Infinite Justice is terrible. As is Noble Eagle. The military needs to hire some poets.

bnw, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My link misfired.

bnw, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I just laughed when I heard those names. The world has suddenly become a bad movie, probably starring Chuck Norris.

DG, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Didn't we recently decide that Stevie Seagal kicks Norris's butt?

Jonnie, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes but Delta Force is the best comedy I've ever seen in my life..............I mean talk about slapstick

Ronan, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A BBC newsreader called it 'Indefinite Justice' this morning...by accident?

suzy, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How about Indiscriminate Justice

Ronan, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The US Military could just become a Seagal film, call it Out For Justice and be done with it.

Jonnie, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm still laughing at the US DoD. Infinite Justice? PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF!

DG, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah, i know. it's kind of pompous, ridiculously action-hero and incredibly insulting at the same time.

katie, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I bet the insufferable Michael Jackson is annoyed that he didn't think of it first, as the name of his next tour.

dave q, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's great though, this shit's going to go on for ages, I'll be laughing for years at that stoopid name. And of course: Noble Eagle! Even better!

DG, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Your shitting me right? I didnt know he could spell words of that length.

Mr Noodles, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

this is what happens when you outsource to the marketing firm that did those vw ads. (there is, of course, no way anyone in the dept. of defense came up with this.) war is particularly big business these days. besides, it beats what the dod came up with: desert storm ii -- attack of the clones. (attack of the clones?)

fred solinger, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Did they really turn to Arnold Worldwide? Because that's where Joei used to work.

Seriously, looking at those names, I'm pretty much convinced that someone in the military came up with them, particularly Noble Eagle.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just as well - Desert Storm isn't funny. But Infinite Justice is - pffffffffffffffffffffff!

DG, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

cohen probably came up with noble eagle. and when he left the room, the national security council let out the laughter they could barely contain when he first announced it so solemnly.

but, seriously, infinite justice: it seems to be winking at you, a nod to all of the hipsterz like us. "nick drake? i listened to him before he was a commercial." "infinite jestice? i read it LOOONG before it was a war."

fred solinger, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Leonard Cohen?? I can't wait for Operation Bird On A Wire, sub titled 'trapeze artists defeat terrorism'.

Jonnie, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A couple posts ago contained the worst joke I've read in years. Discuss.

Ally, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah. I mean, really, enough with the "Bush is stupid" gags. There's so much more to make fun of than just his coke- addled "intelligence".

David Raposa, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was bored with 'Bush is stupid' jokes until the WTC reports started blaming 'a lack of intelligence' and I couldn't resist laughing.

Nick, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think I'm going to have to change the board name to 'I Love Infinite Justice'.

DG, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hold off on that, dg. according to sec. rumsfield, who just held a press conference, infinite justice isn't the official name, information that was revealed when a reporter had asked for the specific reason of mentioning that islamic clerics found it offensive, since only allah can dispense infinite justice.

unless, of course, they want to piss them off, like that guy who suggested firing missiles loaded with pork fat at the afghanis.

fred solinger, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh no! Spoilsport.

DG, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They could still call it 'Infinite Faff'

Tom, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It seems very Metal to me, like Rumsfeld called up Dave Mustaine for suggestions or something.

fritz, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Operation ...And Justice For All?

Richard Tunnicliffe, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Regarding Fred's idea - shouldn't they just use McDonald's fries instead?

Speaking of BAD jokes ... where's Dan? I need someone to cause a distraction while I get the funk out.

David Raposa, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Heh. More like Operation ''Infinite Stupidity''

rezna, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Rumsfeld also said the administration was reconsidering the name initially given to the military deployment, "Operation Infinite Justice," because in the Islamic faith only Allah can provide infinite justice.

So they haven't made their minds up yet. I keep thinking of that Chris Morris thing in which an executed killer is brought back to life as a frankenstein's monster style thing that just barks 'Justice - Justice' in an amusing Southern accent.

Nick, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think I'm going to have to change the board name to 'I Love Infinite Justice'.

I'm all for it, since I decided to change my name to Infinite Justice. It sounds like a great stripper name.

Ally, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maybe the Justice League of America is going to be leading the task force?

jel, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nick: that's precisely what I thought of. 'The Day Today', with David Schneider as the reanimated murder victim. It had three settings for "Justice" - regular, Martin Sheen and Louis Armstrong.

Michael Jones, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

They've dropped the title Infinite Justice now.

jel, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But what's the replacement? Are important men sitting in session brainstorming as we speak?

Mike - yes that's it. Victim not murderer - d'oh!
