irrational hatred of drapes

words or phrases you hate for no pin-pointable reason

it's tempting here to talk about office-speak, but i mean things that no-one else would find any particular problem with

for a friend it's "wipes" or "sani-wipes", it makes her whole face scrunch up with disgust

for me it's "drapes" and also "slacks", they are SHUDDERSOME; writing them is okay but when pronounced gives me the willies

mark s has a particular aqueous phrase that gets his goat in any medium, and so on

"buddy"

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Thursday, 17 July 2003 18:40 (twenty-two years ago)

"starring Amanda Peet"

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Thursday, 17 July 2003 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

When pronounced, the word "world," if I'm really listening to what's being said, is like nails on the chalkboard to me. I had a speech impediment as a kid and still have whatever ... weird thing is in your head that causes a speech impediment (I have no idea how these things work). "World" is a word I just plain can't hear in my head. (I'm partially colorblind, too; I wonder if I was dropped on my head as a baby.) So hearing other people say it ... it's just very odd. I'm so used to it I sort of internally cringe without registering the fact that I've done so.

("Girl" is also difficult for me, which is why I say "chick." It's the /rl/ words, but not all of them.)

... wait, that's a pin-pointable reason. Dammit.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 17 July 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

chris how many times could that come up?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 17 July 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Drapes and slacks are sort of careless and nonspecific and also ineffably '70s. So I think it's the idea/sensibility rather than just the sound, right? Everyone I know who's into design (furniture/home design) hates the word drapes. Somehow 'curtains' is correct.

Aaron A., Thursday, 17 July 2003 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

a surprising number tracer, a surprising number!

and everytime it's shuddersome.

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Thursday, 17 July 2003 18:49 (twenty-two years ago)

What's yours, Aaron? So I can taunt you with it mercilessly of course.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 17 July 2003 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Moist.

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Thursday, 17 July 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Call them curtains. I have curtains, they are not the curtains I want (marimekko fabric wnate dis £26 per metre)

Ed (dali), Thursday, 17 July 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

It's "Tracer" but I don't hold it against you! I mean "tracer"

Aaron A., Thursday, 17 July 2003 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm with Tracer on 'slacks' - a colleague today got info for a conference which suggested delegates should wear 'business slacks'!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 17 July 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

either pottery barn or crate & barrel has bought the old marimekko designs and is putting them out again. I'm not sure if they're making drapes, but they're making sheets which could easily be made into drapes. Um, curtains, rather.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 17 July 2003 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

We have skandium and the marimekko store where one can buy the fabric by the metre.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 17 July 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

yes but you said it was 26 pounds/meter, I thought maybe this would be cheaper.

teeny (teeny), Thursday, 17 July 2003 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

see here

Ed (dali), Thursday, 17 July 2003 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I ahve the fabrics picked out and evrything. Naturally I shall make my own curtains.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 17 July 2003 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

This is not quite the same but I was trying to explain why I didnt like going to a gym to someone the other day. It is partially because they have motivational...words and phrases... written on the walls and they make me cringe. So much so that I cannot give any examples. Even though I wouldn't be saying it sincerely, and they may be good sentiments for all I know, I just can't.

I also can't stand shortening university to varsity.

Tracer-Daddino mind meld!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 9 April 2004 10:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"Drapes" is profoundly gross
"slacks" too.\\

Much worse, however, listen to people on TV talking about their clothing lines or something and they'll say, "This pant is extremely versatile" or something. There's no such thing as a pant, unless you're breathing heavily.

Skottie, Friday, 9 April 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I tried to date this girl in college who told me that she didn't like curtains, and, "window coverings in general make me nervous".

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 9 April 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha was her name Frankie and is she now on The Real World: San Diego?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 9 April 2004 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

No, Frankie would have been like 6 when I was in college! Maybe it is her daughter.

"spooning"

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I like "spponing" when it's in the context of "spooning out someone's eyes." In that case, it's a powerful action word.

Fuck you, sexyDancer. I came on this thread expressly to post that picture. (Or a similar one.)
