This Thread Is For Ronan

hello! just me. given that Ronan is our Youth Ambassador and has a big go at me for being a heartless bitch, merely for taking the piss out his his (probably) tragically teenage skin etc etc etc...

i've just heard on the TV that there is currently NO YOUTH HAIRSTYLE defining our generation! shock! so i want to ask Ronan what to do about it, seeing as how he's our Yoof Ambassador and everything.

Ronan what hairstyle do you endorse? your answer will Change A Generation...

katie, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Surely the Beckham shaved look is the cut of yoof?

jel, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Also, what hairstyles have defined other generations??

jel, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

weeeelll, Mary Quant bobs and moptops the '60s. Punk the '70s. can't remember the '80s but Beckham et al were pointed out as being essentially random as NO-ONE has thought fit to ape them and thus create the defining style of a generation. hence asking ronan as anything he cites will be cool and youthful and therefore influential. etc.

did i mention the quantity of BOUZE i have drunk? this may affect the effectiveness of my theory - apologies.

katie, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

90s = follicle war between Jennifer Aniston, Gwen Stefani, and the Spice Girls.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The follicle man would've been a great super villan!

jel, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm eager to hear Ronan's answer, although I'm a bit dismayed that Katie would think that his skin is anything less than alabaster smooth.

Sean, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

wee he *is* a teenager, as he goes to great lengths to reming us old fogies.

and how long did the "rachel" last? about 1 season of motherfuckin Friends? i rest my case.

katie, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

that was clearly meant to be a well not a wee. did i mention i am pissed?

also rick has just informed me that there is something weird in his trachea. i fear for him.

katie, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

and remind. goddammmmmmmmit

katie, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tell some of the people in Boston that the Rachel only lasted for one year, Katie. Please.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am a teenager, too, but I do not know the answer to this question. Oh I AM ashamed.

Maria, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

no-one was meant to be ashamed, Maria! grasp your chance - tell us that DAs are back in!

katie, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dude, what is wrong with the Rachel? There is NOTHING wrong with the Rachel.

David Raposa, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the thing was, that the mary quant, the nancy boy etc were in some way rebellious and shocked society to its very foundations, etc. the rachel displayed an overweening need to FIT IN with the current female ideal - whither rebellion?

katie, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

First is the "Rachel" a "youth haircut"? Second, is "rebellion" a given in "youth haircut"? Third, what time is it in England? Where is Ronan? Tucked snugly into bed, I hope.

Sean, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

sean you are right. clearly what i should have said is that the "rachel" was not a youth haircut at all, it was just adopted by anyone (probably mainly by over 40s, come to think of it) to make them LOOK like rachel, etc etc. and presumably therefore youthful, though Aniston is clearly an old slapper like the rest of us.

so what do the YOUNG people do? as far as i can see they all just like slipknot which is clearly crap and not as good as Kylie. but Kylie's haircut changes by the second. she even has a PERM in her new video!

and it's 22.58 in england now. i'm going to bed.

katie, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ronan = living on his own in his parents' house and they are AWAY = uh-oh staying up till all hours

however he lives in ireland so is in fact tucked up under his warm peat blanket reading Puckoon by the light of a potato lamp

mark s, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't even know what a DA is! Keep in mind that I do not live in a fashionable place. Here the girls generally have long straight blond or highlighted hair (they can't tell that bright yellow streaks in dark brown hair look neither natural nor pretty) and the boys have plain short cuts.

Maria, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1979-80 in Knoxville TN meant a "punk haircut" - spiky hair done straight up the middle. Preferably with a rat tail.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

DA = the greasy parting on the back of a teddy boy's neck that supposedly resembles the arse of a duck.

Andrew L, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was out!!!!! I just got in!!!!!! I'm a bit drunk actually. Not just drunk on the ego buzz of having a thread for me.....thanks : ) Actually I have perfect skin, my family dont seem to get spots, who did you think I was Matt Bellamy or something? Haircut eh, well mine is not too long and its not short either, so I would have to say messy blonde not too long not too short either. The jury has spoken. Go forth and emulate.

Ronan, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

See, Katie? Perfect skin.

Sean, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

if i was maria, i'd be offended, as SHE is the youngest IL* (i think), and not that dastard fitzgerald, and therefore should be the yoof embassador of this particular 4h club.

jess, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's a thankless task and anyone else is welcome to it. Just remember the sacrifices I make

Ronan, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

wait, thankless? isn't this whole thread thanking you.

jess (is actually only twee and a half years old, and hoping no one notices.), Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i am the youngest but i also know next to nothing about youth culture (or any culture for that matter). this is, of course, a matter that i work to remedy but it's going to take quite a while.

Maria, Thursday, 20 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

whatever happened to the undercut?

Geoff, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ronan, do you look like the real, famous Ronan then?

Tom, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Theres only one real famous Ronan in Dublin and this is he. Theres some guy around the corner whose hair is nothing like mine despite his constant efforts. No mines longer.

Ronan, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"twee and a half years old"? sound like ye-olde English! :)

jel, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it was actually something i saw a small duck in a bowler hat say on looney tunes the other night. but now i'm imagining said small duck speaking in ye olde english.

jess, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am almost 18 years 11 months, how old are Ronan and Maria then? I thought ridiculously short hair was the defining cut nowadays, but what do I know?

Bill, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Are you sure that duck in a hat wasn't Sperel's mate Goose?

Richard Tunnicliffe, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Very short fuzzy hair = only extremely popular cut of moment I can think of, but not sure it exactly counts as a recent fad. I have absolutely no clue what the female youth hairstyle of choice is, but then anyone who's seen my hair probably already knew that I have no idea about fashionable youth hairstyles. (Got pissed off with short hair, started growing it planning to stop growing it and start doing something with it eventually, but so far have been too lazy and uninspired and am just letting it grow and not doing anything with it at all...)

Rebecca, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am sixteen years and one month, about.

Maria, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah I lose, I'm 18 and some months, Its two in the morning so I cant count how many

Ronan, Friday, 21 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

chasimino, Saturday, 22 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ronan, Saturday, 22 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)
